Chapter 5

With the Vertex being destroyed I wondered how did Cadence appear before me. Did I summon her with my mind? "How'd you know the monster was here?" I asked curiously hoping my theory was correct.

"Ah." Cadence began with a smirk "that is a story for another time." The suspense built within me and I wanted to pry more but then the news reporters came. Three different news company at a small store by my house, here. I looked at Cadence but she was already gone. How does she appear and disappear like that? She felt like a ninja who came and went from the shadows. I grab the 2% milk again and toss the money on the counter, "Keep the change." and pull my hoody over my head and walked out as fast as I could to avoid the News reporters. I can't get caught in this mess now.

I jog back home since the store is not far from where I live and I am already inside in no time, place the milk in the fridge and head to my room, being stopped short.

"Lukie, I mean Luke..." It was my sister Lily, I rolled my eyes and enter my room. She continues. " What took you so long? I don't like being alone for so long."

"Things happen and I am here okay! Go to your room." I closed the door behind me, removing my sweater and sat on my bed.

"I'm hungry, please feed me." I heard muffled through the door. "Ugh, this isn't my responsibility. I want to be a teenager!" I push my hair back and head to the kitchen and get started on the cooking.

"Luke cooks the best, even better than daddy!"

I turned around to make the plates "It 's just pasta." For some reason I couldn't help but smile.

I head to the living room to eat my pasta and turned on the tv. The news was on and it's the report from the store close to where I live. The man who's baby I protected was sobbing on the TV holding his baby girl in his arms. "Everything happened so fast." The man began as he was sobbing trying his best to answer the reporters question while rocking his crying baby." One minute she was on the aisle looking for water and the next I see her being cut in half by the serial killer. I couldn't gather myself up. I was shocked and couldn't move. I.. I... I couldn't save my wife in the end and... And... I almost lost my baby girl if it wasn't for this kid being there when the serial killer was zooming in, I would have lost my baby girl. I don't know what happened after that though." A reporter nodding her head intently asked, "Did you see how the serial killer looked like? Can you describe him?" The man held his head as he tried to remember. "All I can remember was that he was dressed all in black." "What weapon did he used while murdering your wife?" Asked another reporter. The man began to sob and thankfully someone came to his rescue. "Leave my brother-in-law alone. As you can clearly see he is hurt and in no condition to answer these questions and he has a child to take care of." Pulling him away a reporter distastefully yells out "He is going to be questioned anyways if not by us but also by the police!" The reporter from the station replies, "what could be going on in the mind of the serial killer and his desire to kill in front of people and in plain sight. We'll look for more witnesses to shed some light on what could have happen. Stay tuned as we gather more information for our report." Finishing with the news station logo I turned it off because I couldn't take it anymore, it was ruining my appetite.

"Were you there when it happened Luke?" Lily startled me, her eyes wide, not realizing she was watching the news with me also.

"No, must have happened when I came back." I remarked plainly. I didn't need to tell her anything. But I got lost in my head. How come the man said he saw a serial killer when he clearly saw what I saw.. A Vertex. I had so many questions for Cadence and felt like I needed to see her soon. I needed explanations.Then I remembered. She mentioned about erasing ones memory... can she also alter them too when multiple people see the same thing? I was so confused. Do superpowers exist? I had so many questions and I had a feeling I will not be able to sleep tonight..

"Luke?"

"You repeated my name to many times today, go to your room after this and get to bed, but not after you clean yourself up. Don't bother me, I am headed to bed" I get up, toss my food in the trash and throw the dish in the sink and head to my room.

I slept just fine...
