14 Boss Fight

I was unable to see anything until we completly entered the room. The moment both of us had fully stepped inside the doors slammed shut behind us. Selena noticed how startled I was, and reached up and scratched my ears.

"Don't bother looking back. Those doors are one way, our only path is forward. To leave this room, to leave the dungeon, we must defeat the boss. If we fail, the only thing waiting for us is death."

I nodded as I listened to her words. They were in line with what the dungeon had said. She seemed to space out for a moment, staring off into space as she mumbled. She reached out and seemed to press something.

"The rewards for clearing this dungeon are actually not bad. Even if it is a low level dungeon it gives 2 points to every stat. Did you recieve the notification as well little buddy?"

I purred in response. Little did I know the question had been a trap. The system was only available for "Players" or in other words the adventurer's who entered these dungeons. Selena had long since noticed something odd about the kitten who accompanied her. Even if a beast was intelligent, they were naturally enemies to humans. Even a young beast such as the kitten would have tried to attack her as soon as she appeared.

She paused as she spoke again. "Don't ever let anyone know that. Beasts, even humanoid beasts do not have access to system. If we survive I will make you my familiar, and then I want your story. I refuse to believe you are just a run of the mill beast. You being designated as a player by the system is all the proof I need."

I nodded at her words. I really did need more information about this world. She had easily deduced that I was not normal by my behavior. I could only mentally sigh. I did not know how a beast was supposed to act. But, as I thought about it, her actions had been suspicious from the start.

What need did the monster have for the history of this world? Or why did she wait for me after telling me about her bracelet? Why would she trust a young beast to watch her back, when there was no guarantee I would not try to snack on her? Well, the last one had a simple answer. Even if I did turn on her I did not yet have the strength to stand up against her.

I pushed the thoughts to the side. Rather they were forcefully thrown to the side by external events. The dark room suddenly lit up as the gemstones lining the room all came on at once.

In the center of the room stood the boss, well two bosses to be exact. The first and by far the largest was a cockroach that made the others we had previously dealt with seem miniscule. It had a total length of 20 feet, and stood over 6 feet tall. On its back sat a goblin that was much larger than the ones we had previously encountered, it also looked slightly different.

Selena had a grim look on her face as she observed the beasts. "A Hobgoblin with a cockroach mount. Just as I had expected."

She ignited her spear as she spoke, slowly walking towards the enemy. She whispered softly towards me.

"I will take care of the roach, but you will need to take down the hobgoblin. It will be difficult for both of us, but the hobgoblin is much weaker than its mount. It makes up for this with its higher intelligence and ability to use magic. If you don't take care of it, I will be helpless against its magic if they take to the air."

I nodded as I eyed the hobgoblin. It was a much stronger foe than I had faced before, but there was no doubt in my mind that it needed to die. If I did not kill it, then our lives would be the ones that were forfeit. I could only regret the fact that I had already eaten, as the stat gain from the hobgoblin would be much tastier than the goblin I had made a meal of earlier.

Selena did not waste time as she rushed towards the boss. The boss had likewise begun its charge towards us. As the girl with a spear and the cockroach collided I left from Selena's shoulder. landing on the back of the giant cockroach.

The hobgoblin turned as he saw me land, and carelessly through a fireball my way. There was no chant from the creature, and it soon turned back towards the main dish that was currently assaulting its mount.

The fireball lacked power, as it was quickly cast without any chanting, but my rather weak constitution would not be enough to overcome the blast. I utilized my relatively higher dexterity to tumble away from the epicenter of the blast.

My fur still ended up singed, and I had taken a total of 5 points of damage. Thankfully the hobgoblin was not paying attention to me, it had assumed the weak fireball had been enough to suppress such a weak enemy.

I was in no rush to clarify his error. I carefully watched my prey, as it watched the battle going on underneath it. It would occasionally launch a chantless fireball at Selena, but i could tell from its agrivation that the attacks did little to hinder her assault.

I did not have the luxury of attacking carelessly, so I carefully waited for an ideal moment to strike. I did not have to wait long. The hobgoblin seemed to grow impatient with the fight below, and finely began chanting. I could feel a massive amount of fire energy building up Inside the hobgoblin, and I knew my moment had come.

As the hobgoblin gave its full attention to the attack it was in the midst of performing I launched myself at the creatures neck. My claws raked against his throat, ripping into his windpipe. I did notnmanage to slash the creatures windpipe, as it had jerked at the last moment, but my attack had managed to do far more than I had originally intended.

The hobgoblin's chant had been forcefully interupted, and the built up mana in his body was put into a state of disarray. Magical backlash assaulted the boss, as thenfirey mana began to burn the caster.

My attack had gone a step further, by sheer coincidence my claws had raked against his voice box, robbing the hobgoblin the ability to speak until it healed. I had invertidly caused the status effect silence.

The hobgoblin turned and glared at me. It ignored the flames that were engulfing it, as it repeatedly cast its chantless fireballs at me. I had no choice but to retreat, as I jumped off of the body of the the giant cockroach.

Only when I landed did I have a moment to spare a glance at the battle that had raged below me. Massive pools of blood filled the ground, and both opponents were riddled with wounds. Selena supported herself with her spear as she stood there panting, her head painted with blood from a shallow wound on her forehead.

The cockroach was in a much worse situation. Its body was riddled with holes, and the repeated small explosions on its back had cut down the last of its HP.

Selena gave me a satisfied nod as the roach fell to the ground. We did not have time to relax however, as a barrage of small fireballs headed towards us. By us I mean me. I could only once again flee as the Hobgoblin focused fully on removing me from existence.

Selena frowned for a moment, her face showing a look of awe at the huge amount of projectiles coming from the beast. "Chantless Casting!" she exclaimed "Thats an extremely rare monster skill. Even the mages in higher dungeons only have a fraction of a chance of having that ability."

I did not have the time to listen to her admiration as I dashed as fast as I could around the circular room. Blast after blast trailed me, and if I slowed down in the slightest any one of them could ruin me. As it stood I my small health pool was already rapidly depleting from the aftershocks of the attacks.

Seeing me struggle, Selena finally willed her exhausted body to move. She dashed towards the Hobgoblin, who currently had its back towards her. The hobgoblin remained oblivious to what finally struck it, even after its corpse slid to the ground. A large hole appearing in the back of its skull.

Finally I was able to heave a sigh of relief as I fell exhausted to the ground below me, not even having the energy to read the various notifications the system sent to me.
