Abyss of Silent Heroes

Reluctant of her roots, a 20 year old Magee and a Captain's daughter - was sent by Lolo Sibal to UST in 1938 to study Philosophy. Way back then, Lolo Sibal was a survivor of the 1918-1920 Spanish flu pandemic and who was accidentally trapped , along with the Captain for twenty years in the legendary cave of Kabang. Interestingly, the Captain left to him the wealth for Magee's education and returned to the United States. In September, 1941 Magee has heard from a UP friend that the the war had to rise on December of the same year so she returned home empty-handed and stayed with her family. Without them knowing, her father, the Captain who survived has returned to the Philippines for another military mission on the same month of September, 1941 and assigned the 25 year old 1Lt. George of the infantry and the in-charge of the platoons in combat to take care of his daughter in whatever means. One day, during the early weeks of the opponents' occupation, one of its officials named Hakanori proposed to Magee through her mother and agreed for the wedding. Magee was against to it despite her multiple attempts to escape. Accidentally, the night before her wedding, she fell into the abyss nearby their house and found herself the next day that she was with the Filipino guerrillas together with the American and German soldiers. She noticed the Captain personally but only in a short encounter and there - he was gone. In the fight for freedom under the foreign occupation, 1Lt. George used a different tactic and studied very well the terrains and natural habitat of the place. He led the disarming of any opponents patrolling and collected all their weapons and uniforms, worn by Filipino guerrillas in disguising. He also applied sharpened bagacays in holes, pulleys, and ropes in all sorts, throwing rocks, powdered some poisonous plants and made antidotes, used herbs and root crops for their survival and even dug some exit points and tunnels all over just to reach the cave of Kabang. Alongside with Magee at war where he only started as his guardian through the Captain's request had smoothly twisted and subtly turned out that he became madly in love with her. One day...

First Night in the Granite House

A fine thought. Magee has interpreted how George's father provided them with all those critical supplies during WWII, as they weren't produced or sold out at all. The downturn of rations, producers and the national industry of food and supplies had foreseen by his father Chuck, even way back 10 years ago. Such a relief that aside from the house, safety, weapons and food have also been prepared for all of them. The journal says that whenever the ship sails to another Asian country next to Philippines, where the American navy is of service to any of the military base, he also delivered supplies inside the tunnel and granite house to further prepare for his son and fiancee for survival in a place registered to the name of Sr. Sibal.

" George, I've seen some emergency kits, biscuits and candies, and there were boxes unopened, your father have focused on putting an internal defense to our lives safely here. He's trying to patch up, from everything." She was talking to him while bathing noisily.

" Yeah! you've been there for an hour. What happened?" He smirked.

" I'm just enjoying with the imported soap and shampoo, its my first time. Don't laugh at me but I enjoyed the synthetic bubbles optimally plus the water is graciously not as cold in the wooden house. Thanks to your Dad for all of these." She dipped the water extravagantly and George kept smiling outside.

" You're welcome my dear wife, this is actually for both of us. What Dad had given me also belongs to you." He smilingly thought.

When he got out, George was lobbying to check the wines preserved in racks at the bar counter.

" Hmm...what are you doing there?"

No drinking of liquor here, whatever, we're in the warzone. You know that, after the war you can drink them all." She smiled.

" But there's a lady's drink here. Hmm I'm pretty sure Dad left this for you." He funnily reasoned out.

" Hmm...I'll taste that after the war."

" But this can't even make you dizzy. Its lovely."

" George, just tell me if you want to drink so that I'll tell you straight - you can't. I won't allow you. Let me check all these." Then she drew near to the bar counter.

" What are you doing to the bottles?"

" I'm trying to check the labels so that when you grab some, I can easily recognize."

" Then why are you doin' this to me?"

" This is marriage. There are things the wife shall control the situation. I hate to mention this but I'd like to bring this up. When you were intoxicated with alcohol during Guida and Edmund's wedding, more than 100 people died, those were your men and I pulled you and my brothers away - just because you're all drunk. That night, I was crying. My veins, nerves, blood, bones were insane with tension. I was so scared." Then she cried.

He moved nigher, embracing her.

"I'm sorry. I used to have this drinking attitude when I was still single, with friends of course and in the army. Just give me more time to adjust and I'll start today. Hmm, no, I'll never drink at warzone." He whispered while putting her chin on his shoulder.

" If its not wartime, I should have told you to taste them all. From vodka, gin down to lady's drink. But see how I stand, my stab wound can't even pull you even a meter. See how things are gonna happen supposed tonight we were attacked by the Japs' soldiers. I just don't like you to blame yourself if you lose me or your men. You are a leader, you know what I mean."

" Yeah. I forgot. Just calm down. I understand what you mean. I was wrong."

Then she sat down and rested for a while. George took some ointment and applied it on her wound.

" Its still painful when I cry."

" Then you shouldn't be crying." He smirked.

" But you made me fall for it."

" Just ignore the stubborn George, he must have been crazy." Then he smiled at her as she pinched a little of his ear.

"Ahhhhhhhhh! He fakely shouted while covering a new gauze on her wound.

When he was done dressing her wound, he aided her towards the bedroom and put some 2 folded towel that served as her pillow.

" Good night my fairy, sleep tight. I'm sorry and forget the pains, the tensions you've been with, alright, I'll gonna stay outside. I'll read a little of the journal then will eventually set to exhaust my eyes and sleep." Then he kissed her forehead.

She was just silent and sighed so deep when he left going out.

" I felt a ton of shame. My wife pulled me when I was drunk while a hundred of my men died and those feelings she felt brought me a lot of shame. She pulled us one by one with a total of six times moving in and out - considering her small wrist, huh! I was so shameless!" He thought.

That night George felt the discomfort of guilt.

" I now fully understand if why she will just allow me to sleep with her on the 8-9 month of a formal relationship. She wants to see my weaker side and hers for me as well. If without the external pressures and this war, she maybe did not marry me yet. Mag, you challenged me but the more I wanted to stay strong for you." He thought as he closed his eyes.

While at the wooden house.

" Albrecht, why the two didn't come back home today? Do you have any idea if where they're heading?" Baldur said.

" I don't know either. But maybe they're tracking the journal's clues."

" I see. I'm just worried about Magee's wound. Hope George brought Magee's meds." Baldur reasoned.

" Don't worry, they know what they're doing. Just focus to the suspicious actions of Elias and a few behind him. Hmm, Baldur, I feel bad about those traitors. I guess we need to vacate from this house tonight, we'll go to the smiling Buccaneer to be safe. I feel that they're eyeing at us. Just bring everything you need to bring, don't leave our papers.
