Six months later, he’d brought a carriage and his heart to Tom’s door. He’d even tidied himself up: he would not wear an opulent towering wig, not even for Tom, and the sun-streaks in his brown hair would be unfashionable, but he’d bought some new coats and remembered how to speak like a gentleman.
