It needed to be said that the guards didn't have a shard of commiseration for the men that they had caught. Even if the two men were thrown in a pit of fire, they wouldn't bat an eye to seeing their flesh melt under the scorching heat. They were nobodies compared to the stage of lawlessness they had been playing at. 

Still and all, they had a united take on the matter. It was to allow one of the men -- the one who was acting on command -- to live. Rather than cutting loose ends, it would be better to strike at the source. That would be most effective in completely exterminating a certain modus operandi. If they did kill the man, it might alert whoever it was who commissioned them to put a tail on Syn. There ought to be a contact established between the two.
