1 The Beginning

Lanis had lived a very sad life, he never had a last name because he was left at an orphanage who had too many kids to care about him at all. He was on the brink of starving constantly and the only form of entertainment he had were books passed down from the older kids.

At school all the other kids seemed to pick on him for no reason. They always seemed to come up with reasons to bully him, and when they couldn't think of anything original they would simply laugh at the fact that his parents didn't love him and left him.

However, they could never make fun of his looks. Even though he was skinny and didn't get nearly enough to eat he still looked above average. He had long blond hair that reached his shoulders with green eyes that would have captured many girls if not for his circumstances. Lanis was tall for a child but couldn't afford to play sports and he didn't have the extra energy to work out so he was never able to find out if he was good at anything, other then his school work.

Lanis worked hard in his studies hoping to get into college some day to escape the kind of life he lived now.

When Lanis became 16 he was kicked out of the orphanage and had to abandon his dream of college and start working for a construction company to feed himself.

Lanis worked hard and was able to finally feed himself without having to fear if he would be able to eat the next day. He also carried on his love for reading and began buying his own books and reading online novels.

Today, Lanis was working on a new skyscraper downtown and had just started his lunch break. He took out a small ham sandwich from his box and started eating. One of Lanis coworkers came and sat next to him as he chuckled.

"Come on that tiny sandwich isn't enough for a growing boy like you. Come on I was going to lunch anyways follow me and we will go get some real food."

This man was named Dave and he was the one who helped Lanis get a job when he was living on the streets begging for money and starving. It was not at all uncommon for him to bring two full lunch boxes, or to take Lanis out to eat away from the work zone, just so he could give Lanis food. Lanis tried to turn it down when he first started working there, but by now he knew it wouldn't work so he just smiled and took the offer.

They went to a small burger place nearby as they ate, they talked and joked with each other like best friends. Since Dave was older then Lanis, he saw him as his only friend but also the closest thing to a father he had ever had.

After their meal, the two had to walk back to their job site, they were still laughing and joking as they stopped at a red light for the crowded city traffic. A hunched over man in a large ragged black cloak turned and looked at Lanis with blood shot eyes before he quickly turned away.

Lanis walked another block behind the man before another red light. Lanis had an odd feeling about the cloaked man in front of him but he remembered how hard it was to live on the streets so he didn't say anything or look down on him.

The light was still red when the man started violently coughing, Dave was clearly concerned as he put his hand on the man's back and asked if he was ok

The man seemed to stop coughing as he stood up perfectly straight and turned to face Dave.

"I am fine" he said in a happy voice as he smiled at Dave, however everyone on the street who had seen this suddenly gasped as the man had blood running out of his mouth and nose and even his eyes looked like they could start bleeding soon. The man seemed to pay no head to his appearance as he moved his hand behind his back.

Lanis suddenly had a chill run down his spine as he moved to step in front of Dave. His intuition was right as the man pulled a knife from his back and tried to stab Dave in the chest. However, Lanis was in the way and he took the knife in his chest instead.

Lanis had never felt pain like this before as he stared at the knife in his chest, he looked up to see the man being tackled by the men nearby as others panicked and some called the police. However, he couldn't look long as his legs lost strength and he fell to the ground. A terrified and crying Dave soon appeared in his vision.

Lanis tried to pat him on the shoulder but he didn't have the energy to move his arm so he settled with smiling and comforting Dave.

"It's ok, don't blame yourself for anything I made the choice and I would make it again in a heartbeat. You already saved my life before so this is just me paying you back, we will call it even on the food bill I owe you too."

Lanis laughed as he made sure Dave would be ok after he was gone, but everything he said he meant. Lanis closed his eyes as he focused on the warm sensation coming from his chest. The warmth spread to every part of his body before he could feel it surround his head and he blacked out.
