Coming up with sect names was a difficult experience, however once the name was chosen the history of it just flowed easily after. I wanted to pick all Chinese names yet somehow I ended up with multiple in English. I guess it's because these books were originally written in English so it depends on what language you may be reading this in. The following states the name of the book that the sect is mainly based in, its name and its history. Enjoy.
The Riddle Of The Broken Pebble - TROTBP
Sect Name - The Hai Di Sect
Uniform Colour - Dark Blue
The sect was started by a male traveller who sailed the seas from a young teen. He met many creatures that told him that the way to life is through water. Throughout these travels, this traveller would have many lovers and he would often leave these women pregnant and then travel onto the next. At 40 after seeing as much of the world as he had wished to see at that point, he took a break from travelling to build a sect encompassing the things he learnt about life and water. Needing help, he wrote to his past lovers to send his children, only if they were sons to help him and he would raise them into fine men. After many months along with the help of the companions he made over his travels, 7 of his sons came to help build the sect.
After completion, his sons and the sons of the men who helped build the sect became the first students of the Hai Di sect. However five years after the cultivation practice had started, the old traveller's youngest son murdered him by drowning him in the ocean by the sect. This son called Zheng Tao, then took over the teachings adding his own beliefs on water forming the sect into what it's known as today. Zheng Tao allowed things that his father didn't, which were female cultivators, the teaching of abstinence and openness of communicating with other sect teachings.
The Ground We No Longer Walk On - TGWNLWO
Main Sect Name - The Frozen Jade Sect
Uniform Colour - Dark Green (Originally, Pale Blue)
Neighbouring Sect Name - The White Jade Sect
Uniform Colour - White
The history of the two neighbouring sects is that White Jade and Frozen Jade used to be one sect called Moon Jade. The founder and the only sect leader of Moon Jade had many wife's as no matter how many times he tried he couldn't have a son. However one day, a month after the birth of his eighth daughter, two of his pregnant wife's gave birth to sons born on the same day. This amazing birth day only caused competition between the brothers all their life as they both had equal right to the sect leader position. So when their father died, the two fought heavily over who would be the new leader, eventually tearing the sect apart.
After weeks of strain, the two decided it would be better if they divided the sect into two, creating the sects White and frozen Jade. The east buildings belonging to Frozen Jade and the West buildings belonging to White Jade. However the entirety of the buildings burnt down only two years into the separation. After all that was lost the two brothers decided, after believing that this may be sign from the gods or their angry father, that they must rebuild their sects separate from each other.
So one brother built their sect into the forest of forgotten forgery and the other built theirs outside the forest by the river of crying chrysanthemums. The brothers, much to many peoples agggriences, chose to keep being near each other causing them to fight over their different teachings and views their whole lives. Meaning that neither got married or had children so after their deaths there had to be new sect leaders chosen leading to Deng and Xun taking over the family line.
Also due to the fire, the history of Moon Jade sect was lost as the two brothers didn't feel it necessary to rewrite what had been destroyed - choosing to start fresh with the history of their own sects.
Enemy Sect Name - The Black Wood Sect
Uniform Colour - Black
Although there isn't much known on who or why the sect was formed, some believe it was an old cultivator from the original Mood Jade sect who was angry at the brothers behaviour and chose to start a new sect in spite. Hence the choice of the place being on 'Black Moon Mountain'. Others believe it be a bastard of one of the brothers or maybe even a brother of the new sect leaders, Deng and Xun, after the death of the original ones. All that is truly known is that the Black Wood sect are the ones who started the one hundred year conflict with Frozen Jade and refuse to end it with an alliance.
The Last Song You Ever Played For Me - TLSYPFM
Sect Name - The Yellow Crow Sect
Uniform Colour - Bright Yellow & Black
The founder grew up as a poor merchant's son and lived with his father in a wooden house in the forest by the main town his father traded in. When he was a child he used to call all birds a crow because his father would refer to all birds as crows. When his mother died, he at the young age of eight, would see a yellow bird that would visit and sing as the sun would rise on a small fruit tree by their house. He would wake and greet the bird as 'yellow crow', talking to it every time he saw it as he had no one to talk to, his father didn't like to talk to him.
However, one morning, his father got fed up with the singing and grabbed it, snapping its neck and killing it in front of the child. The future sect leader was so upset that he always remembered the little yellow crow through his whole life. Therefore after learning about cultivation he opened his own sect and named it after the poor little yellow crow.
The Night That Never Saw Dawn - TNTNSD
Sect Name - The Yulan Hua Sect
Uniform Colour - White & Pale Yellow
The founder of the sect loved magnolia flowers because of his mothers love for the flower. Since the flowers bloomed far from where they lived, once his mother became ill, she begun painting magnolias to make up for they fact she was too unwell to go see them. The future sect leader decided one day that he would venture off as he mother slept to go pick one of the flowers to bring to his mother once she woke. But when he returned, he found his mother had died in her sleep next to an unpainted picture her bed.
Due to distraught and painful mourning of her loss, he regretted not seeking out the flower earlier so after her death he planted magnolias around the house so they were always in sight. The house was later built into a shrine to mourn his mother which then became a sect due to his son wanting to learn cultivation. He taught his beliefs based on the words his mother lived by and hung her unfinished painting on the day the sect began. It lies till this day only partly painted as the founder believed no one had enough talent to finish the painting his mother had created. And so the history remains one of tragedy and regret.
It seems so easy to write the beginning of finding oneself, within cultivation, by experiencing tradegy. I personally have never actually appriecated magnolias so maybe this is a sign to go see them. Or plant them. Or paint them. I think I am more an artist than a gardener but I'll stick with the plan to go visit them in spring.
