...
Horace had screamed as if he had seen the most terrifying monster of all, as if what he had seen was fear personified. Even I was frightened, but the rest seemed to used to this because Hugh grabbed him and laid him on the sofa that was in the same living room.
Seeing me looking at me somewhat worriedly, Millard intervened.
"Don't worry, it's normal" – Millard said.
"Is it normal that he screamed as if he had seen a scary monster?" – I asked surprised.
"Many timeshe does it because sometimes his premonitions are so terrifying that he screams. In truth, he has already woken us up dozens of nights for having that type of dreams so we are already used to it. Besides, he will be fine in a few minutes" - added Bronwyn.
Actually, I already knew it, but I had to play the role of the ignorant. Although thinking about it... why play a role here? I mean, I can say that Grandpa told me before he died and since he is already dead, no one can prove that I'm lying.
If I remember correctly (and I don't think so), now that we are in the year 1940, my grandfather is still alive, doing the jobs he used to do. However, and for some reason, the future of a person cannot be revealed, otherwise, I suppose that Miss Peregrine would have already called my grandfather telling him of his death and how to avoid it. But, even if he's alive it doesn't matter because he hadn't even married by then. I think it was a little later. I think, because I really have no idea. In the memories of the previous Jacob there were no such memories, so for some reason he never asked his grandfather, so now that he is dead, I cannot ask him anything at all.
"Anyway, it's almost the date change. Let's wait for Mister Horace to wake up and we show Mr. Portman how the day restarts. What do you think?" – suggested Miss Peregrine.
"Yes!" – they all nodded.
Or at least most of them because Olive and Emma were still quite quiet and Claire spoke so softly, that she could barely be heard, while the twins with the masks didn't even say a word, but they looked quite excited about it... or at least that was what it seemed to me.
As Bronwyn said before, it didn't take long for Horace to recover, but when we asked him why he screamed in his sleep, he said he didn't remember, because apparently he didn't remember all the dreams, only some of them. Although I know thanks to my memories that he is hiding the truth. The bad thing is that I don't know what it is because that part of my memories was completely sealed.
"Come on, there's little time left. Take all your respirators" – said Miss Peregrine looking at her little pocket watch.
Everyone nodded and took some respirator located right at the entrance. That's curious because when I entered I didn't see those masks. Did Miss Peregrine put them there when no one saw her? In any case, it is not too important.
"Here, Mr. Portman, this is for you" - said Miss Peregrine giving me what appeared to be a very old respirator.
Then, we all went out to the courtyard to witness something that I never thought I would see in my life.
The sky seemed calm, completely clear and with beautiful stars illuminating the sky. Here, where there was hardly any light pollution, you could see the stars in their maximum splendour, but soon, numerous explosions began to be heard. Luckily, they sounded quite far from the place.
"Put on your respirators" – said Miss Peregrine.
As I could, I put on the old respirator because I had never used one.
"Let me help you" – Olive said suddenly.
The truth is that I didn't put it on´. I was having difficulties because I had never put on a respirator. I mean, why would a businessman need a respirator?
Olive helped me put on the mask and in a few seconds I was able to put it on correctly.
"Thank you" – I said.
"You're welcome and... forgive me for having been rude with you" – Olive said with a sad tone.
I couldn't see her face because it was covered by the respirator.
"How? I don't remember you being rude with me. Although I can't say the same about Emma..." – I said.
"Hehe, don't worry, she'll get over it. She's a good girl. She's just a little sad about Abe's death and 'angry' with you for being Abe's grandson, the person she loved" - Olive explained.
"It's understandable" – I nodded.
I wouldn't feel good either if anyone suddenly told me that the woman I've always loved and was deeply in love with is dead and if you tell me that she left me to marry someone else and that they had children too... I wouldn't even know how to react to this, so I understand the feelings of both girls.
"I was also quite sad about Abe's death and that's why I've been so apathetic these last few hours, but I promise that tomorrow I'll be better. Sfter all, life still continue" - Olive said.
"Don't worry, I understand your behavior" – I nodded.
"So... will you forgive me?" – Olive asked.
"Only if you promise me one thing" – I said.
"What?" - asked Olive curiously.
"That tomorrow or one of these days you will give me a complete tour of the whole place" – I said.
"Hehe, promised" – Olive nodded.
The atmosphere between us had become a little... strange. Probably because Olive was starting to have feelings for me, but those feelings were completely false, because Olive saw in me her previous boyfriend, Abe, who looked a lot like me when he was young (although I'm much more handsome), so she probably has mixed feelings. But I don't want to be anyone's substitute, I'm not my grandfather and I never will be. I won't make his same mistakes and I'll go my own way. For him, the most important thing seemed to be his travels, thus abandoning all his loved ones in the process. But for me, the most important thing is the family and then everything else. That's how I feel, that's why I can't allow Olive to develop feelings for me, especially those kinds of false feelings. If she falls in love with me, I want to her fall in love with Jacob and not with Abe's grandson because he looks like him. I've already said it, but I'll still say it again: I'm no substitute for anyone and I never will be one.
"Miss Olive, Mr. Portman, I'm glad you've made peace, but it's the time, so if you're so kind" - said Miss Peregrine.
Apparently everyone had heard the conversation and seemed quite happy that we had reconciled and the truth is that I am happy too. Olive is an amazing girl and not only beautiful, but also kind, affectionate and quite honest and I don't want a girl like her to be angry with me for something that is out of my control. The bad thing is that I have no idea how to approach Emma. It's not that she's a bad person, but... She has a somewhat ... explosive personality, so to speak, and getting close to her will not be an easy task.
But suddenly, the noise of what appeared to be an airplane interrupted my thoughts and there I saw them, planes with the Nazi symbol streaking through the sky at incredible speed.
"Here it comes" – Fiona said.
Suddenly, the plane in the center dropped one of the bombs, which would have fallen directly into the orphanage and destroyed it completely if it had not been for Miss Peregrine pressing a small button that was on her pocket watch. Suddenly, everything was stopped, the raindrops falling from the sky, the planes streaking through the sky, the birds passing through the area, everything except us was paralyzed in time.
Immediately afterwards, Miss Peregrine pressed the same button and as if by magic, the bomb began to recede, the planes returned the way they had come and all day it went backwards.
"September 2th, 1940" – I said.
"That's right, we have gone back in time, to September 2th, 1940 just before midnight" – Miss Peregrine agreed.
"Is that how it is every day?" – I asked curiously.
"Yes, although normally children don't go out, with me is enough" – Miss Peregrine agreed.
"Although observing it from time to time doesn't hurt" - Millard said.
And suddenly, something came to my mind. Even if these children survived the explosion due to their peculiar condition and the fact that they had a ymbryne that every night went back in time to the day before, it doesn't mean that the rest were so lucky. That is, how many lives were lost in this war? People's lives, whether they are women, men, the elderly, children and even babies, what that son of a bitch did has no name whatsoever.
The Bible talks about demons, red-skinned, horned beings who sow evil wherever they go. But what I believe is that demons are already among us and they are not the beings described in the Bible, but human beings. Those with evil intentions like that son of a bitch who are capable of kill millions of people just out of ambition. Just because he wants to have more power, that's just... disgusting.
"Mr. Portman, I think it's time for you to come back. Your father must be very worried for you" – said Miss Peregrine interrupting my thoughts.
My phone, for some reason I don't understand, didn't work here, so I didn't know what time it was, but if both sides shared the same time... I think I'm late.
"Right, I had forgotten!" – I said hurriedly.
"Don't worry, Miss Bloom will accompany you to the exit" – said Miss Peregrine.
Emma nodded without saying a word.
"Follow me, I will show you the way" – Emma said.
After taking leave of everyone, and assuring them that I would come tomorrow without fail, I escorted Emma to the exit.
