7 Chapter 7: Just By Chance

A day has passed since the dream and everything is as normal as it could be. The deer were back, the messages weren't appearing, and I didn't get another weird dream last night. In this situation it is a miracle.

I'm out hunting in the forest again. This time I found deer. They were all eating and I readied my bow. I pulled back and released. The arrow went flying, soaring through the air, until it hit it's target. The arrow struck the deer right in it's eye, snatching a quick kill. The others fled as soon as their fallen one struck the ground. My target was only one of them, so I let them flee. Simon taught me that I shouldn't kill more prey then I needed to.

I walked over to the deer and took a long look at the arrow. It went pretty deep in it's head. I tug on the arrow, it didn't budge. Another thing that Simon taught me was that I should salvage as many arrows as possible.

[MC: There is no saving this one.]

I give up on the arrow. I take another look at the deer, it was kind of big. It was going to take a bit to get the deer home.

[MC: Maybe there is an easier way, than just carrying or dragging it all the way back.]

I take a look around and think to myself. I could make a makeshift sled to carry it on. That'll probably be the best choice for me. I grab a bunch of big sticks, some rope that I always bring around, and start making the sled.

After multiple failed attempts, I finally got the sled together. I look up to the sky. The sun is right above me, it was noon already.

I shove the dead body of the deer onto my sled. I heard the sled creaking with just half of the body on it. I hope it doesn't break the sled. I shove the rest of the body on the sled and strap it down. Another thing I have to worry about, are all the things that'll get in my way.

I am halfway back to the house and so far I haven't ran into anything. It was as if the sled was a perfect fit to slide right between the trees and for it to avoid other big objects. If not for the circumstances I'm under, I would be proud of myself for making such a great sled.

[MC: Of course I had to remember that.]

I grumbled to myself even more. Why must I go through this? Why must I have to do this "deal"? Why must that demon insist on making a "deal" with me? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why?

I kicked a nearby rock, it went flying somewhere to the right. At that same moment, I heard a screech, to none other than my right. I dropped the rope I was using to drag the sled. What was that? Did I hit something? What are the chances of blindly hitting something?

I go over to where the sound came from. Probably a bad idea, but at this point I really don't care what it is. I look around, trying to find the thing that made the high-pitched screech. Now that think about it, it really wasn't a screech it was like a chirp. Did I hit a bird?

Praying to the god that sent me here, I look at the thing I hit. It was a bird. I sighed. I don't know what I thought would've been there. I guess I should be glad that there wasn't anything, besides the bird.

[MC: I need to relax.]

Relaxing seems like a distant dream at this point. God did say that I would go to heaven no matter what happened, so perhaps it would just be best to not fight it and submit to the demon. There is no point in trying to fight something I cannot win against. I slapped myself.

[MC: You cannot think that way. You have to stall for as long as possible, until another choice can be chosen. Do not submit. Do not submit. Do not submit. Do not submit to that piece of shit.]

I shake my head really hard, repeating the same thing. I take another look at the bird, and noticed something that I didn't before. The rock that I kicked was lodged in the eye socket of the bird. It was a perfect fit too.

[MC: Only if I had that kind of luck with this demon.]

I went back to the sled.

[MC: Oh fucking hell.]

In the amount of time that I went to go check the bird out to when I came back. A pack of wolves ate majority of the deer and ruined the sled that I made.

[MC: How the hell does something like this happen? It hasn't even been an hour!]

That's right, it hasn't even been an hour yet. The damn wolves that did this can't be that far. I look for footprints. I'll kill one, maybe two, then I'll go home.

No. There would be no point in doing that. That would just be a waste of my time. It would just be faster to go home and hunt again tomorrow. I don't feel like staying out here for any longer then I have to.

I take a deep breathe and let it all out.

[MC: Everything will be fine, I bet Simon has some extra food from his own hunt. I will be fine. Everything will be fine.]

I look at the sled. There would be no point in taking this crappy designed thing. If I have to, I will make a better one at home. Also, I do not feel like cleaning all of the deer remains, just to save a sled.

I take my knife out and started to saw off the antler of the deer for my collection. And to show Simon that I actually killed the deer and I'm not making excuses for not being able to get any game.

I put the antler in my small pouch and before I went home, I also grabbed the bird that I managed to kill. It was the size of a duck, so this might somewhat make up for what I lost.

[MC: Better than nothing.]

I tell myself before heading home at full speed.
