2 Chapter 2: A New Beginning

After God snapped his fingers, everything turned black. Then there was light, but it wasn't like the endless white void, it was the sun.

I open my eyes.

I felt weird, I couldn't really move around that much and my entire body felt tired. This must be me as a baby. I look around and see a couple blurry images of people beside me. They must be my parents. One of them looked at me, then looked outside the thing we were inside.

[??: Can't this carriage go any faster?!]

[??: I'm sorry, Sir! This is as fast as it'll go!]

[Sir: Damn it! Is there anything else we can throw out to go faster?]

[??: No, I'm afraid not! We already threw everything out, except for ourselves!]

There was a loud screech coming from behind us. That's probably the thing we're running from. No, that's definitely the thing we're running away from. It sounds horrible.

[??: Fuego! Fuego! Fuego!]

That's a weird thing to say when we're being chased by a monster.

[Sir: Darling, please stop. Your magic is not affecting it. All we should focus on is escaping. It would be horrible if you were to faint by using too much magic.]

[Darling: Iwa! There is a chance for this magic to slow it down. If it works, then we would have a higher chance in surviving this. Fuego! This monster will not take my son!]

The eerie screeching is closing in. None of their attempts to escape this creature, are succeeding. Is this how it's going to end? Will I die, before I can do anything in this world? I really hope not. But, the outcome of this will decide my fate.

[Darling: Fuego! Fuego! Iwa! Get ready for impact!]

Well I guess that settles it. I doubt I'll survive this, especially since I am a newborn. I try to brace my baby body, but that proved to be more difficult than I thought it would be.

The one known as Darling, my mom, grabbed onto me and prayed to God.

[Darling: Please let my son survive, he didn't do anything to deserve this. I don't care what happens to me, I just want my son to survive!]

Tears were rolling off her cheeks, as she gripped hard onto me, but carefully to not hurt me. Behind my mom was my dad holding up his fist as if he was going to kill it. I knew what was going to happen. The monster will attack, we'll crash, then the monster was going to kill us off one at a time.

And just as I predicted the monster pounced on the carriage, making us crash. At that moment I felt something rush into me. The feeling was amazing, it was as if I grew wings, ready to fly. Of course I didn't actually grow wings, that was just the feeling.

[AAAHHHHH!!!]

The scream of the people that were just with me moments ago echoed through my head. I heard the monster crunch on their heads. I even saw the creature in the corner of my little eyes. It was pitch black with three really long tails. I think they were tails, but I couldn't that well.

The monster grabbed three bodies with it's tails and looked at me. It stared at me for quite a while, then it turned and ran away. Dragging the dead bodies, that were once my parents and what I think was a carriage driver.

Was there a reason why it didn't get me? I know I'm small enough to fit in it's mouth. Does it have to do with that rush I felt earlier. I'm glad that I wasn't killed. Though, for those people who just died, I feel bad. But the real question is, how am I going to survive. A newborn left alone in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by trees and in a position that people won't see, unless if they look around carefully.

I started to think, but suddenly a twig snapped beside me. A figure as big as a bear stood over me, as if it were thinking "how am I going to eat this". Well, I don't think it would eat me, but there is always that chance, right? I have to get prepared for the worse.

[??: Damn! I can't leave this child by themselves. Argh!]

The giant picked me up and carried me, he walked over to the crash site. I was looking at the scene too, not that I could see that much in the first place.

[??: *blegh* What the hell happened here?! This isn't normal. This isn't normal at all! Shit! What kind of bloody animal does this?]

Whatever he was looking at clearly horrified him. For the first time, I'm grateful that I can't see that well.

[??: The animal that did this is probably coming back. I got to hide this child's scent. Actually, I'm going to mask mine again as well.]

I don't know what he rubbed me with, but it didn't smell like anything. I wonder how this is going to mask our scent. The man rubbed the stuff on himself and picked me back up. The man then looked around and we went back into the forest.

*****************************

A few hours later, or what felt like hours, we finally got to a place where the man stopped in front of. The place seemed like a house.

[??: Sorry about the mess.]

The man walked into the house and I kid you not. There was no place as messy as this place. I'm practically blind and I can tell the mess was horrible. I couldn't tell the floor, the stains on the floor, and the stuff that was left on the floor, apart. Mostly because I can't see, but the mess was just that bad.

[??: Ha ha ha...]

I guess it's not my business about how he lives his life. He puts me down on what I assume is a table. He turns and go up the stairs. I heard him mutter something under his breath, but it was too quiet for me to hear what he said.

A few moments later he came back down the stairs with something in hand.

[??: Alright, I got what I needed.]

He opened up the thing and began tracing his fingers across it.

[??: "Make a bottle of heated milk and give it to the child-]

He continued down the list of things that he needed to do, while I try to fix my vision. I blinked hard, I wiped my eyes, I do both at the same time, nothing is working. I try and focus on the man that is now in the kitchen, but all I see is a blurry image. I'll just have to wait until I get older to get rid of this blurry eyesight.

[??: That should do it. You hungry little fellow?]

The answer to that is yes, but I can't talk. I reach out my arms, eager to grab the bottle. He gives me the bottle and sits down in front of me.

[??: I wonder what I should call you.]

I hope he doesn't give a stupid name that no one will be able to pronounce. Give me a name like Hiro or Kei. Don't give me a name like Khaemwaset or Lakshmana.

(Author's note: Apologies to those who are named Khaemwaset or Lakshmana.)

[??: What about "Orion"?]

I can live with the name "Orion", I guess that'll be fine. I look at him with the most approving look that a newborn can make.

[??: Orion it is then! I guess I should give you my name too. I am Simon. Simon Lathalas.]

Such a simple first name, but what's up with that last name. "Lathalas", well I guess it's not that hard to pronounce.

[Simon: It is a pleasure to be your new guardian.]
