153 Rob's Change

"Enough with the speculation, what's certain now is that this Jack, is someone we can't afford to cross. No need for unnecessary clashes," Rob pondered.

Unable to come up with a straightforward solution, Rob decided to implement precautionary measures through Flas. "Flas, inform our people to keep it low during this time," he instructed.

"Understood," Flas nodded in agreement.

Rob continued, "And if possible, find a way to influence Jack differently—maybe a little bribe action. If he's in hot water with us, there's less to worry about. But remember, don't go overboard. Got it? Don't let him witness our daily life activities until this blows over. You can handle it, just keep a distance from me!"

"Anyone caught causing trouble during this period will face consequences. If he catches wind of our dealings, I won't be pleased. My fate may not be bright, but yours will be much worse!" Rob warned as he signed an indictment form. He waved Flas off and briefed other officers about the situation.

Shortly after, Jack and Gordon strolled into the police station.

"Good morning, Gordon. And this is our new colleague, Jack, right? What a fine name! We've all heard about your heroics last night! Outstanding work. A crook like that deserved to be behind bars ages ago!" Rob eagerly greeted Jack.

Gordon: "..."

Confusion clouded Gordon's mind.

"Why this sudden change? Shouldn't they just stick to their usual topics, like which shopkeeper paid protection money or which bar's escort girl was the talk of the town?"

Gordon, accustomed to the routine, found the shift in his chief's' behavior unsettling. Suddenly, everything made sense when he overheard the whispers circulating behind him—Jack was the reason for this abrupt change.

Gordon couldn't believe his eyes as he entered Rob's office. He had expected a scolding, maybe a stern lecture, but what he witnessed left him utterly perplexed.

Rob, the usually serious and authoritative police chief, was smiling. He handed coffee to Gordon and Jack, his demeanor strangely congenial. This was not the Rob he knew.

"You really did something big yesterday," Rob remarked, his smile unwavering. "It really surprised me."

Jack, never one to shy away from a challenge, responded with a half-smile, "Is such a thing very important to the force? Isn't the more, the merrier? Or, Chief Rob, do you think what I did was wrong?"

Gordon, standing beside them, nearly spat out his coffee. He couldn't fathom why Jack was challenging the chief so boldly.

But then came Rob's unexpected response, leaving Gordon in a state of bewilderment. "Of course not," Rob said, eyes narrowing as he coughed. "What you did is right; it's what we should do. The only thing wrong is that you should have informed us in advance. The action is too dangerous! You have to know that you are not alone; there are us behind you. We should work together and fight resolutely."

Gordon was at a loss for words. This was not the stern reprimand he had anticipated. Rob's transformation from seriousness to an almost paternal concern left Gordon questioning his own reality.

As Rob continued his impromptu speech, Gordon's confusion deepened. Was this still the director he knew?

Amidst the surreal situation, Gordon found himself wondering if he was still dreaming. To test his reality, he pinched his inner thigh, and the sharp pain that followed brought him back to the bizarre reality of Rob's unexpected change in demeanor.

When Jack shifted his gaze away, Rob breathed a sigh of relief, unaware of the perplexity he had injected into Gordon's world.

....

For some reason, when Jack came, Rob suddenly felt an awful pressur! This spooked Rob.

Jack surely sensed Rob's breathing kicking up speed, and he got a tad worked up.

This scenario ain't new; it happened last night.

But this time, Jack did it on purpose. When he spoke, he deliberately cranked up his [Heart of Justice] skill and sized it up.

"So... the heart of justice is to make criminals fear me?"

Jack pondered and glanced at the smirking Gordon. After reckoning it had zero sway on him, he got a hazy hunch.

It ain't working' it with the righteous folks, but could fuck up the not-so-good ones?
