17 The Calm

The metallic clinking sound and the constant beeping of the monitor echoed on the otherwise silent ambulance. Violet looked over at Samuel, sadness weighing heavily in her heart. She could see that he was restless and troubled. The loud blaring of the ambulance siren pulled her from her thoughts causing her to look over at Jessica in a panic. The little girl just smiled at her.

"It was just a red light, no worries." the paramedic said to her in a reassuring voice. He was looking at the screen and writing notes on the clip board. "She seems perfetly stable." Violet began to relax as they came to a stop. "Whats going on?" the paramedic in the back asked the driver.

"It looks like a wreck. I don't think we can get around it." the driver responded back, "But I can try." Violet hoped that everyone that was involved was ok.

A loud high pitched alarm sounded causing everyone to jump. "Whats going on back there?" the driver demanded. Violet felt as if the world was moving in slow motion. Jessia, whom was just bright eyed and looking around now had her eyes wide open with a blank stare looking at the ceiling and she had turned as pale as the sheets that she was laying on. The paramedic that had been so calm before was now rapidly doing chest compressions trying to keep the litte girl breathing.

"HEY! I NEED AN ANSWER! WHATS GOING ON BACK THERE!" the driver and the other paramedic in the front yelled back in unison.

"I don't know man, but I could use some help back here! She's code blue!" The ambulance came to a screeching halt and the side door flew open then slammed closed again. Violet looked over at Samuel. He looked like he was a million miles away. Fear, worry, and anger plastered across his face. Samuel felt like his whole world was falling apart. As he watched the EMT's that were working on his baby sister, who was no longer breathing. He faintly heard one of them yell switch.

"Everyone, hold on tight! This ride is about to get really rough!" the driver yelled from the front as he turned on the sirens. The ambulance began to jerk violently causing the doors that were holding medcial supplies to slam open which spilling the contents on the floor. Violet and Samuel quickly buckled themselves into the harnesses so they wouldn't be thrown to the floor as well. It felt like a roller coaster ride for them both, from holding their breath to their stomachs feeling cold, heavy and sick. Violet was saying a prayer under her breath, praying to what ever god was listening at the time that the little girl would come to. That she would live. Violet was trying to do anything to remain calm so she looked out the back window. She saw that they were driving on the median, zooming by all of the stopped cars. Samuel was doing just the opposite. His eyes were glued to the little girl lying on the stretcher. He was kicking himself. He shouldn't have gone to school. He should have gone right back to his baby sister. He could have protected her. God only knew how long that sick fucking bastard had her. The cold pit in his stomach burst into a raging inferno. Samuel wanted blood. But he also didn't want to move until he knew that Jessica was going to be alright. If anything happened to her, nothing was holding him back from going on a murder spree. A small beep was heard over the yelling of the EMTs. "We got her back." the older man said looking at the one that had been in the back before him. It seemed as if every one let out a sigh of relief that they didn't know that they had been holding in. Violet looked at the little lines dancing on the screen showing that the little girl was alive once again.

"Jessica, you gave us quite a scare there." Samuel said, his voice cracking. "Hey Jessie." he said reaching over toward his little sisters hand. As he grabbed it he looked up from the ground and toward her, as if he was expecting her to squeeze his hand back. But she didn't. "Jess." he said a little louder. But the little dark haired girl lay still as if she was in a deep sleep. Panic filled Samuel's brain. "Jessica!" he said raising his voice another otcave. "What's going on?" he demanded, glaring at the paramedics."What's wrong with her? Why isn't she waking up?!" Samuel demanded almost screaming at the two men. Samuel was frightened, but in the back of his mind he was in a way hoping his yelling would wake his sister up.

"We don't know, son. Sometimes, with alot of shock, the human body get so exhausted it tries to shut down. But she's breathing and even though it felt like an eternity we got her back before it could have caused any brain damage." the older paramedic said, trying to calm Samuel down. Samuel looked helplessly at Jessica. Right now she was unconsisous and he couldn't do anything to help her. He felt that he had failed to protect her. His thoughts began to spiral and he slumped into the seat behind him feeling utterly defeated. He couldn't take much more. He felt as if any moment he was going to shatter. He was at his wit's end. Jessie was the last person he cared for. He couldn't lose her. His mother was a lost cause. His father had abandoned him right after he was born. He was failing out of college due to poor attendence. His only reason for still trying at life was currently laying unconscious not even three feet in front of him.

"Shaymore Memorial Hospital, this is 5578 Delta, 5 min from arrival with a 7 year old female responsive upon pick up now unresponsive. Needing immediate medical attention. She coded about 15 min ago. Currently stable." the driver called over the raido.

"We read you, 5578 Delta. Come on up." the voice on the intercom replied back. The driver hung up the mic and turned on the sirens to alert the hospital staff that they were arriving. Violet and Samuel both looked in Jessica's direction, hoping and praying, that the little girl would soon open her eyes.
