4 Chapter 4: Downhill

-Liz-

I drove up the hill only a few miles from my house. I did not realize that I had spent the entire day shopping usually I would be home by now to help with dinner. My family try to eat dinner together as much as possible since my parents usually travel for their job. It was our family bonding time. Many of my friends dread eating dinner with their family but I love sharing a meal with my parents. We reminisce in old memories and talk about future plans. I appreciated the efforts my parents put into making up for their absence. Growing up, I was often home alone or with a sitter because my parents would be out of town or too caught up at work to come home for the night. Being the understanding child I was, I never complained and rolled with the punches because I knew that once their work was done they would pay all their attention to me. About five years ago, my parents were promoted and their roles allowed them to work-from-home occasionally. During the weeks they would worked from home, my parents would make it to all my school functions, and when they were back in the office, I hardly ever see them unless it was to shower or grab a change of clothes. I applaud their dedication to the company and their work.

I reached the top of the hill and slowly accelerated down the road when suddenly a deer jumped in front on my car. I quickly stepped on the brakes but there was no way I could have avoided hitting the animal. I screamed in horror as I collided with the deer and my car skid downhill. I spun with the car a few times before my car came to a sudden halt, I had crashed into the tree at the end of the hill. I was semi-conscious with my hand still gripping the steering wheel. I survived I thought, slowly breathing in relief before I faded into blackness.

I had just reached my apartment and was about to take off my shoes when Arrow came from behind me. "She's in trouble", he said with his hoarse voice. "What? I was just with her." I said not wanting to leave my cozy messy apartment. He nudged his head towards the door and I knew he was serious. I sighed in annoyance and headed out as quickly as I can. I flew towards the hill leading to Liz's house expecting her to be surrounded by immature teenage boys again but loud screeches alarmed me. I picked up my flying pace and reached the big ol' hill. Liz's car was at the end of the hill crunched up against a tree. What happened!? I immediately flew down carelessly forgetting to keep my wings invisible. I peaked into the car and saw Liz unconscious. Her head was resting on the steering wheel, glass everywhere, and she was bleeding from her head and hands. I gripped the door and ripped it away from the car to get to Liz. "Liz! Liz!" I shouted to see if she could hear me. Her breathing was weak, she was struggling to breathe. I carefully moved her body back to rest on the back of her seat to give me room to undo her seatbelt. I couldn't comfortably get into the car to undo her seatbelt. I realized my wings were still out, I looked around to see if anyone saw me. Luckily, no one was around to see me, I put my wings away and rushed to free Liz from her seatbelt. I slowly carried her body out and gently laid her on the ground. I could use my powers to heal her but that would heal her entirely, if she walked away from this accident without a scratch it would create suspicious. I assessed her condition; she had bruising all over her chest. She must have hit her steering wheel pretty hard and her seatbelt probably caused her to have trouble with breathing. "Oh my, what happened here?" A grandma said with concern and worry. "I am not sure ma'am but please call 911 and tell them to send help immediately", I told her. She rushed back to car and reached for her cell phone.

While I waited for help to arrive I attempted to do chest compressions to help with Liz's breathing. With the amount of bruising she has, she may have a few broken ribs from the seatbelt making it painful to do CPR but without doing chest compressions she could die here. "Allow me", Arrow said. "you'll heal her completely and people will be suspicious of what happened here" I whispered while doing chest compressions. "In the state that I am in, I don't have my full powers so my healing would only be able to heal her broken ribs", he said sternly. I gave him a slight nod and allowed him sometime to completely heal her ribs before continuing CPR. I steadied her breathing until the police and ambulance arrive. The emergency medical technicians swarmed Liz and I, I stepped away from her to allow the team to examine her. She looked so lifeless with her bruises and cuts. I wondered what happened for her to be in this condition. "She will be okay. You saved her", Arrow assured me. "I did what I needed to do", I replied with my arms crossed. Her unconscious body was transferred to the ambulance and the police officer approached me with his note pad handy. "Hello officer", I greeted him. "Hello sir, do you know what happened here?" he asked while pointing to the messy scene. "No officer, I was going for a walk and I saw the car. I rushed over to see if the person was okay…She is a friend of mine," I answered. The officer took the rest of my statement and headed to examine the scene. Arrow, standing next to me the entire time spoke, "I will let Mae know, you can stay here and gather Liz's things to bring to the hospital". He vanished and I walked over to collect her things.
