1 Episode 1 - Nice, I am going to another world

"I'm busy"

I say that to myself frequently so that I don't become exasperated with the lazy, mundane, good-for-nothing life I live.

I am Yohira Yohei Konno. Unemployed, I've been living a neat life for several years.

Now I'm just lying in bed.

My parents died in an accident, so I don't have any brothers and sisters. And no relations with relatives either.

I am spending all the money I have earned from my parents' inheritance. I am not interested in being a spendthrift or doing anything out of the house, so I am living a meagre life with hardly any expenses. It's manageable.

With one exception.

The giant computer that sits in the centre of the room, assembled with my own hand-picked parts. It's has a godly performance that would rival even the top notch PCs of any company out there.

When I get tired of sleeping, I reread my favourite manga or use this computer to play tricks on the world to pass the time.

I'm here on a new website by the covert admins of the government office.

What's interesting about this... hmmm, whoa? There's something weird about the virtual space the government is using.

You don't have to go back to the classic days of typing in an address to get internet information on the screen. The modern internet is a three-dimensional expanse of virtual space.

More than three years ago, I found a virtual space that was somehow open, used by government employees, and sometimes I enjoy peeking at it, but if you're going to leak information and denounce it, it's not a good way to pass the time. It was surprisingly boring and yet thrill-inducing way to pass the time.

Ambassadors everywhere could see reports of yabba yabba yabba yabba, which could be done by a child to an old woman, or something else that didn't matter. It's a bit of fun, but for the most part, it's a bunch of numbers and hard reports that only an insider can understand. Because I wasn't interested in the world of politics.

But sometimes it's a little fun to peek at things like this, because it's a little bit like playing spy. In this way I spend my time lurking in the secret databases and picking apart information it with ease.

In such a virtual space, I found something out of place, with a very solid protective barrier put up.

It's as if the server knows it will be broken into. But even for confidential information this level of protection is too much. And the barriers are a miss-mash of seemingly super old and newer versions of the barrier, and I don't know what they're trying to do. ...

It's a little tempting to break in after all that... well, if you run, they won't know you're there. Yes, let's see.

While making full use of the hacker skills that I have wasted time honing in my life as a NEET hacker, I peel back the protective wall one by one. Still I'm not so sure if I am doing it correctly.

Surprisingly, it works.

Open this and... Hey, it's not working... it's more of an attack if you try to disarm it. Is it the server protection client?

Mm-hmm.

Oh, it's open. Hmm? Did it just a message left behind?

"Do you want to travel to another world?

I...? "Yes" I type.

"Good, see you tonight."

Hmm! What is it? It's all gone. Well, never mind. Maybe it's some other kind of scam hacker who play pranks in virtual space to pass the time and have fun?

Well, okay.

It's been a while since I've been to an eventful event... though the content of the event was a bit disappointing.

I'm tired from working...I'm really tired...and I'm lying in bed again, saying "I'm tired from working."

When I wake up, I find a dark red floor, walls decorated with paintings, and a nice book with a good spine. And a large antique-ish bookcase.

Where am I?

My bedroom was never such a fancy place!

"Hi, I'm here to pick you up."

I hear a voice and turn around to see another cocky-looking girl sitting cross-legged on a fancy-looking couch.

She's dressed in what looks like a pure white frock and her hair is of beautiful white colour.

Does she like white that much?

"....Where are we? What is this place?"

"Hmm? Hmmm, well, that's fine. For that matter, you're the one who applied for a trip to another world, right?"

The white-haired girl tilted her head and quietly lifted her cup of tea and drank it with an elegant gesture.

"...Applied? OH… Are you the one who sent that weird message?"

"Oh, yeah. I was in a bit of a hurry when I tried to broadcast the message, but it was disarmed and read before I could do so."

"Do you work for the government?"

"What? No, no. No, no, no."

"Who are you then? Is this... virtual space? There's something weird about it."

"Oh, so you noticed? Yeah, well, it's pretty close to what you guys call virtual space. But be careful. This is a world where there is no time and no space."

"…"

"It's just that I'm making it look that way. Well, you won't die if you stay in this room, so don't worry about that. It's just hard to get out of here."

"So what's your deal?"

"You said it first. You're the one who's going to another world. I'm just confirming that."

"Are you sure? About going to another world or something."

"Oh, well, you treated the message lightly, didn't you? It wasn't a proper procedure after all, so... meh. Well, that's why we have this final confirmation procedure. If there was a misunderstanding, then I'm not going to send you, got it? We can still turn back."

The white-haired girl frowned lightly, then turned to me and looked at me with troubled face.

"Wait, wait. It's not believable in many ways. If you say there is another world, then I want to go there too. But it's a different story depending on what kind of purpose will I serve there and what kind of world you want me to go to."

"Well, I'll explain it in a nutshell. My purpose is to investigate. I want you to go to another world for me, to find out what's there, how people live there and what they do. Just give me a brief report on whether you're there or not, or something. The world we're going to... well... wait a minute."

The white-haired kid is shaking her hand lightly, manipulating something while shaking her head in a huff, as ifs he's analysing me or something about me.

"The world I want you to go into, do you, uh, play games?"

"LOL…all the time."

"Yeah, then are you playing an RPG with jobs and skills and all that?"

"Classic stuff. I haven't done an offline RPG in a while, but I've done that kind of MMO stuff. . I mean, I've mastered it."

"So you've mastered... well, that's makes everything much easier. Apparently it's a world with a system of jobs and skills in operation."

"The jobs and the skills...? Jobs aren't like unemployed or bankers or anything like that, are they?"

"It's not... That's exactly like a combat-based RPG, like swordsman or mage or something like that. I don't know much about the details, though."

"You don't get it. If you have skills, will you give me something like a perk, like giving me useful skills while I go to another world or something?"

"Not really. Don't you think it's a perk to be sent to another world?"

"Yeah, well... but then I could die as soon as I get there and not be able to report it. Isn't there something that you can give me?"

"Well. You're not the only one who has to go. So don't worry."

I don't feel safe!

This girl is scary and it's even scarier when she says it with such a nonchalant expression on her face!

"Well, I'll make sure the transition is somewhere where you won't be in danger, so you won't run into a monster and die right away. Would that be okay?"

"There are monsters?"

"Yeah, yeah. Good luck with that."

"Seriously. Is it really a game at this point?"

"I mean, it's a miracle that there are no monsters in your world. The surrounding world is usually a monster's paradise."

"Seriously? The other worlds…"

"You do understand that there are several different worlds, right? There are worlds that are close to each other and worlds that are far away. The world that is close to your world is usually infested with monsters."

"...Wait. Does you not going there on your own have anything to do with that near or far thing?"

"Oh, that's an astute guess. Yes, I'm simply too far away to get to the world I'm investigating, to put it simply, that's why I turn to people like you."

"Like me?"

"Yeah, those are used to using virtual space and stuff and also used to other spaces."

"Virtual space and other worlds are connected?"

"Isn't it rather odd to think that they aren't? Virtual space is like using a space that doesn't exist in reality, so, well, it's like using another world. Right?"

She snickers at me as if she was mocking me. It's a very irritating and annoying thing to do.

"Oh, really..."

"People who aren't used to different spaces and moving to a different world or something like that can get brain freeze."

"Are you brain freezed?"

"No I am not. What I am saying is, if the person who is sent to otherworld isn't able to keep his mental balance, they'll have a mental breakdown and then they'll just die."

It seems that there really is another world. I'm excited.

"Are you a god or a four-dimensional person or something?"

"Ha, no, no. Or am I a god in a way? Well, I don't think so myself like that, so no"

"Okay."

What's up with this girl? Oh, well.

"So you're going to another world, huh or have you decided on not going? By the way, if you go, you won't be coming back."

"If you're telling the truth, I'm going. I'm tired of the old world."

"Oh, yeah? Well, you're welcome to go now."

"You're a pea-brained person. How am I supposed to go at this very instant?"

"No, we were supposed to go straight to the other world once we got your consent."

"Well, wait. Can't you let me take something with me from this world?"

"Hmmm, clothes, maybe. But if you take too much of it, you'll catch an otherworldly disease and have a mental breakdown."

"I would have a mental breakdown so soon! What kind of world is that?"

"But that's what other worlds are like."

"Yeah...okay…I guess."

"If I don't have cheat skills, I want to take something from Earth to cheat or something, but I guess I can't. You know..."

"You didn't even bring your phone."

I rummage through my pockets and find a device.

"Oh, is this the only device I will take with me?"

It's a small, small virtual space connection device that fits comfortably in one's hand.

"Hmm? Is this from your world?"

"Yeah. The one that can be easily operated. It's small, and can you allow it to be part of my outfit?"

"Hmm. Well, it's okay. And if you fail, you're dead."

"Oof. Yeah, well, nice to meet you."

"Okay. Okay, I'll transfer you to the other world right now. Good luck!"

"Oh, come to think of it, you didn't tell me what to do with the report,"

"I'll contact you for a debriefing. The report should be just a general overview of what's going on in the world. Other than that, you can live your life the way you want."

"Yeah. Bye."

"Yeah, I'll see you later."

The girl waved her arm and the door at the back of the room opened, revealing a glowing wall of light beyond it.

"Do I have to go through this?"

"Yeah, yeah. And trust me you shouldn't stop in the middle. Otherwise you'll have a mental breakdown."

"Not that again! All right, I'm ready to go."

I keep going through the wall of light and come to a small room with nothing in it.

"...Have you crossed over to another world already?"

I'm going to deploy the terminal in the virtual space. But nothing happens.

"Huh. You don't have a virtual space?"

In the original world, it was my only advantage in manipulating virtual space. Now that I can't do that, I feel impatient.

''Seriously... tell me, first... is this also what I am supposed to be reporting?"

I am lounging around and fiddling with my device when I see a display I hadn't seen before.

Oof, what's this? I couldn't expand the virtual space, but something like a game screen comes up.

Well, it's another world, that's what it is. My interest shifts to the status that came up. Are jobs set up on their own? But "interferer"?

Could it be that it was automatically set up because I am from another world?

But next to that, "None". A reminder that an unemployed person is still unemployed, even if they go to another world.
