59 The Siege of the City of Glow

The demon army had quickly surrounded the City of Glow. The Senior Demon smiled as he was eager to break the city open. This was one of the main capitals of the humans, and surely its destruction would be a huge loss to the humans. Now that the demons had come, there would be no escape.

The demons had prepared well for this battle. They took along the best of their army while leaving behind a few soldiers to distract the human army at the base that had been emptied. The demon army waited out of sight from the human defenders in the city. During the night, they had quickly gone around and surrounded the city. Now that the sun had risen, there was nowhere for the trapped humans to flee to. The trap was set.

The humans in the city had prepared for their last stand. The army was poorly trained, given the minimum of training. They were all that was left of the army of Dawn after the terrible defeat. Everyone was scared, but they knew there was nowhere to run. If they were to survive, they would have to fight. Despite this, the people had begun sinking into despondency as the situation seemed hopeless.

The King himself had come to the walls to support the soldiers on the frontline. The spoke words of encouragement and tried his hardest to boost the morale of the soldiers. However, this task, like winning the battle, was hopeless. Still, the King tried his best and was determined to make the best stand that he could. Even if he was to die, he would die with a sword in hand.

The demons began charging the main gate. Devilbeasts began flying overhead, throwing their spears at the defenders on the wall. The humans were being picked off one by one by the Devilbeast raids. Then, a massive demon approached. As the soldiers watched in fear, he battered down the gate. The flood of demons soon poured into the city.

The soldiers made a heroic stand, trying their best to hold back the tide. The demons clawed through the armor of the soldiers and one by one the defenders fell. The King wielded his sword as he charged toward the gate atop his horse. He slashed his sword through one demon and then another. Then, the horse was gutted by another demon. As the horse fell, the King jumped off and killed the demon which killed his horse.

The king was beset by a horde of demons. He heroically stood as he fought against them. He killed a fourth demon and was on the verge of killing a fifth before a demon from behind killed him. With the king dead, the remainder of the soldiers tried to flee before also being overrun and killed by the demons.

The demons began pouring into the city unopposed. They barreled through the houses and killed any people who had not fled from the demon horde. A few knocked over torches had caused fires that were devastating the city. The demons flooded through the narrow streets and approached the inner city. The Senior Demon casually walked through the city, relishing in the destruction and death. "Victory was assured", he thought. "Humans could never stand up to the demons who were the superior race."

Within the inner city, the remaining civilians gathered. Also inside was Appen Moya.

A soldier came up to him. "Your father is dead. You are the king now."

Appen Moya stood solemnly. "If I am the king now, then I must lead my people." He turned to his two friends beside him, Otto Luoxi and Oro Tokat. "Otto… Oro… You were my friends from the very beginning. Thinking back, there is so much that we did together. If only we could go back to those happier times. But now it seems that the end has come. I will stand against the demons."

Appen Moya, the king of Dawn, paused. "I ask of you two, will you stand beside me one final time. We three friends, we shall be together to the end."

"Of course", Otto Luoxi said.

"I will go wherever you command, my king", Oro Tokat responded.

The three of them walked up to the gates of the palace, where the last remnants of the army stood. The demons began battering down the gate. The metal gate groaned and cracked. Appen, Otto, and Oro looked at each other one final time. Then, they turned to face the demons.

The demons poured through and began attacking. The soldiers were quickly being overwhelmed. Oro, fighting valiantly against three demons, was killed. Appen Moya stared defiantly ahead and killed any demon that approached him. However, with the remaining soldiers around him being killed, he soon was killed by the demons as well.

Otto was the last one left. He had seen his two lifelong friends die. Now, it seems that he too would meet the same fate. He killed yet another demon with his sword. He was going to take down as many as he could.

Otto Luoxi staggered as he felt a pain in his abdomen. He looked down. The end of a spear was jutting out. It seemed that one of the demons had got him. He collapsed to the ground, watching as people died around him. The life faded from his body and he closed his eyes, never to open them again.

The Senior Demon relished in his victory. The demon army had overrun every defensive line of the humans. There was nothing the defenders of the city could do to hold them back. Suddenly, he received a report.

The human army had come from the back and was swiftly approaching. It seemed that they had caught on to the demon's plan and somehow knew where they were. "It was no matter", the demon leader thought. He had planned for this as well and soon the rest of the humans would die as well. Then there would be no one left to stop him.

He quickly ordered the demon forces to withdraw from the city and they began congregating outside, preparing to meet the human army in battle.
