40 Full Circle

It was an ordinary day in Hermes. The sun was visible in the clear blue sky with only a few clouds scattered above. The temperature was slightly warm but not hot and it was a perfect day for being outside. Spring had come and it was time to begin planting crops.

Mitch was a farmer living on the Hermes Plateau. His farm was a short distance away from the main city. During the warmer months he would farm to produce food which would be sold in Hermes. During the winter he would return to the city to be protected from attacks from the demonic beasts.

Today, he was in the city to pick up something. He had ordered a machine called a seed drill to help him with planting. This seed drill was quite a new device, he had only started hearing about it a year ago. He was told that the seed drill would make planting easier and would also increase his yields. At first he had been somewhat skeptical, what would those in power who never worked a day in their life know about farming. However, there had been a few farmers who had tried out the new seed drill and they told him that it was fantastic. Mitch supposed that it would be a good idea to try it out.

He walked down the street which was filled with people. The city had seemed to have become more lively recently. He was walking by Bob's food store and decided to go in and have a chat. Bob was a good friend of his and was the one that he sold his food to.

"Hey Mitch", greeted Bob. "It's a surprise seeing you around here. Shouldn't you be getting ready to start planting soon?"

"I'm here to pick up my new seed drill", answered Mitch. "It is supposed to help me produce more and make planting easier."

"Another strange machine?", said Bob. "Seems like there are a lot of those popping up nowadays. Well, good luck to you."

"Yeah. I expect that I will probably have more wheat to sell you this year", said Mitch.

"Well, that'll be good. I have been looking for some more suppliers since demand is starting to pick up", said Bob.

"Good to know", replied Mitch. "I guess I'll be going now. Nice talking to you."

After Mitch left the store, he went to the warehouse next to the factory that produced seed drills. When he arrived they verified his order and then he paid for the seed drill. It was rather large so he needed a wagon to take it back with him. So, he had to pay an additional shipping fee to have the seed drill delivered to his farm. He had spent a lot of money so he hoped that it would be as good as they say.

Chris was heading to work. He had gotten a job in a factory recently. It paid better than what he used to do. Now, he was able to afford a better life for himself and his wife and daughter. Living conditions were better now, they had running water and had enough food to eat. He had also been able to buy a new coat for his daughter Mary with the money he earned.

Chris approached the factory where he worked. He worked in a seed drill factory helping to assemble the machines. The seed drills he helped make were supposed to help farmers plant seeds. He was told that the seed drills were critical for the development of the nation by increasing food production. Chris was proud of his work because he felt like he was contributing for society and making life better for other people.

As he approached the factory he saw one person who had just bought a seed drill and was preparing to get it delivered. "That would be one person I helped", thought Chris to himself. It was good to see his work being put into use and to know that the things he built had impact.

After arriving at the factory, he checked in and settled into his work. He worked with several other people in assembling the seed drill. Rows of conveyor belts powered by steam engines delivered parts to him. He could hear the sounds of drilling in the background as people worked on shaping the metal parts that composed the seed drill.

Chris focused on his task. He carefully affixed the metal blades to the wooden frame of the seed drill, making sure that they were all aligned correctly. The blades weren't that sharp - they couldn't cut his hand but they were enough to push soil. The machine was designed to make a hole in the soil, deposit a seed, and then fill in the hole.

With several people working on the task, the seed drill was soon completed. It was wide enough to plant several rows of seeds at once and would need to be horse drawn. The group quickly began working on the next one as they pushed the completed one onto the conveyor belt.

His work was like this every day and it did feel rather dull. However, the pay was good and the work wasn't excessively taxing or dangerous. He was also encouraged by the fact that he was doing something important. After all, food was the most important thing to have. He also felt that if he built more seed drills and more food was produced, then he would get to eat more food. So, he endeavored to work as quickly and effectively as possible.

Once his work ended, he started heading home. On the way back, he stopped at the store to buy some flour. He greeted Bob, the store owner, and then bought some wheat flour to be made into bread. After buying the food he left and went home to his wife and daughter. He was looking forward to having dinner and wanted to rest after his long day of work.
