Short Story #2

FIRST CRUSH

My first crush occurred during the same year that me and Katie became friends.

I met my crush, let's call him Jordan, when I joined the chorus at the school. I was told I was a very talented singer multiple times by family members and I wanted to see if what they were saying had any truth to it.

In all honesty, chorus was way more intense than I thought it would be. The instructor put me in the soprano section and I always sat in the front row with a couple of girls I was pretty friendly with.

He was in the tenor (high male) section and always sat three rows behind me. He sat with a lot of his buddies and didn't really notice me at first. He may have seen me a couple of times, but he did not know my name and I did not know his.

Chorus went on for a couple of weeks before signups for the tennis team showed up outside the auditorium door. I saw him sign his name under the sign up sheet and out of curiosity I went up to read it. Jordan.

I desperately wanted to get to know more about him so I signed my name under his. I didn't know shit about tennis, but my brother was #1 in New England for his age group once upon a time, so I figured that my brother could help me out.

A couple of weeks later, there was a bomb scare at the school so the entire student body was evacuated to the new high school that was being built. We were evacuated to the gym and we had to sit on the bleachers to wait for our parents to pick us up. I remember the day pretty well, and how scared I was, because I didn't have a phone to use to keep in contact with my parents about pick up arrangements.

I was sitting with a couple of unfamiliar girls but I wanted to sit next to Jordan so I could get to know him. However, he was busy talking to one of his guy friends so I could not.

So I made a plan: I would move up a row to talk to a guy I was friendly with, let's call him Connor. I would sit with Connor and talk to him, then when he left I could talk to Jordan.

My plan worked! I talked to Connor for about 10 minutes until his parents came and picked him up. I remember Jordan pretty well. He had a very calming voice and a nice smile and I remember how kind he was when he first spoke to me. He said, "Hey. You're Patrick's sister, right?"

My brother's name is actually Patrick, so I'm keeping his name the same. You're welcome, Patrick.

I smiled at Jordan and said, "Yeah!"

We were on the tennis team together, we were in chorus together, and now we had finally met!

A few weeks later, I only had one wish. I wanted to give Jordan my number. Now, my mother had finally given me a phone, it was a flip phone but it was still a phone.

I did not know how to give Jordan my number because I did not know if he even wanted it in the first place. But I made up my mind to give it to him.

In chorus, I called Jordan over and he separated himself from his friends to come over and talk to me.

"Here's my number." I said, and gave it to him.

I know what you're thinking, "The dude didn't even ask!" And you're right, he didn't, but in my head he didn't need to. But in a few moments I would realize, that he did.

I watched as he smiled then walked over to a group of my friends and his friends and exclaimed how I gave him my number and he "didn't even need to ask for it!"

I watched as one of my friends at the front of the crowd grabbed the slip of paper from his hands and tore it into a million pieces and handed it back to him.

What he said when she did that will haunt me forever. He said, "Thank you, I would have done that anyway."

Now, I know what you're thinking, "What a douchebag!" And you're right. I was so mad at him! I wanted to punch him! But he was right, boys need to ask for your number before you give it to them.

You're probably thinking, "I already know that!" Which is so crazy seeing how I was in 6th grade and I didn't! That's how slow I was!

Now, we all have these moments where we have crushes and then we completely embarrass ourselves in front of them. That's what I did, that's for sure!
