5 Emptiness

I looked in through the gap and saw that...

There was no one in the classroom

You were expecting me to get into trouble.. Weren't you??.. But not today.

The room was completely abandoned... Not a student in sight... Or better yet, a teacher... I was relieved that for once I wasn't going to be publicly embarrassed or humiliated but at the same time, I was anxious as to know where my class could have gone. Since there was absolutely no one in the classroom I opened the door fully and glanced around the room when a note on the board caught my eye.

The note was written in cursive and read:

╔══════════════════╗

Unfortunately all classes

have been cancelled due

to the power surge that

caused all the computers

in the school to blow...

Class will be shifted and

rescheduled tomorrow,

if the computers get fixed

but if not then school is

cancelled until further

notice and we will send

an email if classes are

still on.

Okay... So that explains why that boy wasn't worried about bunking... I thought, with the classes being cancelled and all. I should have just stayed at home today.. But anyway, I still have to go to work after this and maybe this wasn't such a bad thing after all because I can start work early now, which means more tip's. I'll be able to pay my rent and still have extra money over... That sounds like a great plan, I thought to myself as I turned around and left the classroom.

Walking through the passageway in the school, still carrying my bag of heavy books, I made my way to my locker and opened it while placing my books inside. I then closed it only to realise that all the lights in the schools hallway were beginning to switch off one after the other. The lights in the direction of the schools exit was already switched off, leaving the front section of the school in total darkness and the lights in the passageway I stood were about to be switched off as well.

I had to get out of there immediately, otherwise I would never be able to see where I was going. Once all the lights go off the passageway will be completely dark. I grabbed my bag and began to walk down the hallway. The lights in the passageway I was walking hadn't switched off just yet. While I was walking I could hear my boots as they squeaked on the glossy tiles. I was almost near the exit of the school by the front hallway when I heard footsteps coming from the direction I was walking towards.

Who else could be here?.. The only person I could think of at the time was that boy that was outside of the school. Maybe he forgot something... I thought. Continuing to walk, I was now in the darkness of the front hallway... There was nothing but darkness until I noticed a pair of glowing bright green emerald eyes. The eyes seemed to be moving closer towards me and just as I blinked, they were right in front of me. I was about to run in the other direction when I felt a pair of hands touching my arms in a firm yet gentle grip.

Was I scared?.. No, okay maybe a little... But I was more anxious as to know who it was. Then I felt a hand stroke my cheek gently. While my eyes began to adjust to the darkness I saw the outline of a hoodie with spiky hair sticking out of the hood. The hand that touched my cheek was warm and made me feel odd. This feeling was uncommon to me... It felt like a jolt of electricity went right through my body, making my legs quiver and feel as though they were about to give in...

"This person really had an impact on me."

When the eyes began to move closer to my face I could feel the persons hot breath blow against my cheek as they breathed. A smell of mint lingering in the air.

"Hey," a voice spoke, "it's you..."

I was frozen and for some strange reason I couldn't get myself to speak. I was spacing out in my thoughts when I heard the voice again...

"Alice," he said.

Wait, how does this person know my name?.. I thought.

"Alice..." He said again.

After escaping my thoughts I finally got myself to speak.

"Huh, h... how.. d..did you know my name?.." I managed to stutter out.

"It's written on your bag..." He replied.

I couldn't see very well in the dark but for some reason I could picture him furrowing his eyebrows.

"Oh, I forgot about that..." I said with a giggle and then I heard him laugh.

As my eyes began to readjust to the darkness again, I caught a glimpse of him smirking.

"Why did you stay, I thought you were going to leave?.." I asked him.

"I was going to leave earlier but then I saw you and I couldn't just leave you here alone. You, me and the janitor are the only people at the school. If I left you alone and someone were to come here and hurt you I would feel responsible. So that's why I came back."

"Oh, well thanks then... for looking out for me."

"Anytime," he replied.

"But anyway, I have to go now I still have to get to work."

"You going to walk in this rain?.." He asked.

"Well, I came to school walking, so yeah, I guess I will be walking."

"Which way are you heading?.." He asked.

"West wing's side by Cherry's Diner."

"You know that's funny, I was just about to make a stop there," he said smirking.

"No, you weren't..." I replied.

"But do you want me to?.." he asked, "I would gladly make an exception for you."

I just laughed.... "No it's okay, I'll just walk."

"Are you sure you don't need a lift?.." He asked again.

"No it's okay..." I said as we made our way out of the school.

When we got to the exit doors it was still raining heavily and a chilly gust of wind blew causing my umbrella to flip open the wrong way. The thunder continued to boom in the clouds above us while the lightning darted further down to where the mountains were. It was so cold that I could hardly feel my fingers.

"Okay..." I said with a shiver. "I think I will take you up on that offer now..."

To be continued...
