Amelia scoffed at my words. 

"A contract? You are joking, right?" she asked, her body rigid and tense as she stared right at me. 

I sighed. I had been doing a lot of that today.

"No, I am not. Like I said, we are not getting married. So let's find a middle ground and reach an agreement. One that would be of benefit to us both," I explained, hoping against hope that she would see reason in my words and not make this hard for me.

And like the woman that she was, Amelia didn't see reason in my words. She flared up instead.

"Do you hate me that much?" she asked, her eyes already filling up with tears.

"I don't hate you, Amelia. We just can't get married. We are not compatible for that type of long term commitment," I responded.
