The Grand Finale (Part II)

From now on, without Gong Shaohua, they would have no more reservations. Gong Shaohua had similarly acted in a frenzied and obsessive manner throughout her life, yet in the end, she too could not be with the one she loved. Though she claimed to have no regrets, deep down, she likely felt remorse; otherwise, she would not have wished for her ashes to be laid to rest alongside Xue Lanluo, even if the hope seemed slim.

Life is fleeting; why cling so tightly? It is better to let go.

"Sending you off a thousand miles, we must eventually part."

After a month, the crimson plum blossoms bloomed once more, dancing in the wind, just as they had during the tumultuous days past. Yet, amidst the vivid memories of that day, Xuan Yue felt an overwhelming sense of change.

"Jin Mo, Yi Lan has just awakened. With me and Green Pearl away, I must trouble you to take good care of her."

"Of course."

Jin Mo bowed, clasping his hands together, his demeanor respectful.

Xuan Yue patted Jin Mo's shoulder and chuckled lightly, "Be a bit more at ease; there's no need for such formality."

Jin Mo's head lowered even further, his ears burning, remaining silent.

"Princess."

Yi Lan approached, linking her arm with Xuan Yue's. Perhaps from the long period of unconsciousness, her complexion was pale, and she seemed devoid of energy.

"I'm already well; please let me return with you."

Yi Lan patted her chest, standing straight, exuding an air of having no issues whatsoever.

Xuan Yue pressed her hand against Yi Lan's wrist and glanced around, "This place has splendid mountains, pristine waters, and fresh air—"

Beside them, Green Pearl looked at the shy Jin Mo and teased Yi Lan with a playful smile, "And the people are even better."

Yi Lan turned slightly to glance at the still-head-down Jin Mo, her face flushing red, "Green Pearl, don't make me tear your mouth apart."

Xuan Yue took hold of Yi Lan's hand, laughing along, and feigned seriousness, nodding, "Green Pearl has a point."

"Princess, even you mock me."

Yi Lan raised her voice, a hint of annoyance creeping in.

Xuan Yue pursed her lips, squeezing Yi Lan's hand, shaking her head, "You know whether Jin Mo is a good man. If you believe he is what you seek, then pursue him boldly. Happiness is in your hands, and a good man must be cherished; don't blame me, a princess, for not reminding you. Regret not; for now, focus on your recovery here. Once you're well, return with Jin Mo."

Yi Lan looked at Xuan Yue, then at the still bowing Jin Mo, and pressed her lips together, "I understand, Princess."

"Sister Yi Lan, please get well soon."

Ya'er approached Yi Lan, bursting into tears as they embraced.

Green Pearl and Bai Ping Ting joined them, with Bai Ping Ting patting Yi Lan's shoulder, while Green Pearl wrapped her arms around the three of them, tears flowing freely.

Xuan Yue exchanged a few words with Jin Mo before turning to see the three still clinging to one another and laughed, "It's not a matter of life and death; why cry? Yi Lan has Jin Mo to look after her; she will recover swiftly. We should take our leave."

Little did she know, her words would become prophetic.

At the entrance of Xiluo Village, Yue Ying and the others breathed a sigh of relief upon seeing Xuan Yue emerge, approaching with smiles.

"Where are the others?"

Bai Ping Ting asked Yue Ying, eyeing the forty or so people before her.

"Gui You and the others went to scout the terrain, as the princess took longer than expected. The rest are in Wuhui Valley."

Xuan Yue nodded, "Let's depart."

With a beaming smile, Xuan Yue walked ahead.

Gong Shaohua was dead; thus, no one in the Lan Kingdom could threaten Lan Yixuan any longer. Now, only Xuanyuan remained. Thinking of Xuanyuan, Xuan Yue smiled wryly; that place must be in chaos now.

Before Fengchase Valley, dozens of branching entrances sprawled, winding and twisting toward the unknown. In just over a month, the foliage had grown lush and dense, a mix of green and yellow. A gust of wind swept through, stirring up yellow sand and carrying heavy, cautious breaths.

Xuan Yue halted, waving her right hand, her eyes warily scanning both sides. She stepped back a few paces, while Bai Ping Ting drew her curved blade, standing beside Xuan Yue. Green Pearl and the others quickly formed a protective circle around her.

"Move out!"

Xuan Yue shouted, and the others surged forward. There must be ambushes among the dark mountains behind them; this place offered only a narrow path ahead, and they had to break through. Otherwise, they would be trapped.

"Kill!"

Suddenly, those lying in ambush on both sides charged out from the underbrush on horseback.

The Snow Spirit in Xuan Yue's hands shone brilliantly under the sun, its soft blade concealing the power to cleave through mountains and rivers. With an unstoppable force, she leaped out from the protective circle, swinging her sword. The blade's aura swept through, sending yellow sand flying and withering grass springing up.

The silver light dazzled, and the soldiers on horseback quickly closed their eyes. The rearing horses let out a whinny as their forelegs separated from their bodies, causing the fierce warriors to collapse to the ground.

Seeing this, Bai Ping Ting and the others rushed forward. The fallen warriors, just about to remove their helmets, felt a chill at their throats, and their movements froze, captured in an eternal moment.

"Take care of yourselves."

Xuan Yue, at the forefront, wielded the Snow Spirit, which transformed in an instant into a reaper's scythe, swiftly and accurately reaping lives. Her white garments were splattered with blood, the silver blade echoing the sound of dripping blood. Her expression remained calm, devoid of panic, as those women behind her acted with equal composure.

"Princess, your reputation is well-deserved."

Ji Yunli stood behind Xuanyuan Hao, watching Xuan Yue in awe. The last time at the Biluo River, he had only seen that legendary woman from a distance, her white attire billowing, exuding a confidence that even the men succumbed to. If this woman were to become Xuanyuan's daughter-in-law, they would have nothing to fear regarding their ambitions. Yet, alas, this person opposed them; without raising a single soldier, she had dealt them a heavy blow, humiliating them before the world. Until this individual was eliminated, Xuanyuan would have no chance.

"Princess, there's an ambush."

Behind Gui You were only three or four individuals, all covered in blood, their faces equally stained. Upon seeing the safe Xuan Yue, one of them forced a pale smile, their lips trembling, as if they were deflating balloons. With their long spear propped against the ground, they knelt down.

Their journey had been fraught with blockades; nearly all their sisters had sacrificed themselves to protect Gui You. An ambush ahead? Who was it?

Xuan Yue swung the Snow Spirit; her wounds had not yet healed. After the fierce battle, she had expended much of her true energy, but fortunately, it was only her left chest that had been injured.

"Miss Xuan Yue."

A resonant voice echoed, belonging to a figure exuding an innate kingly aura—proud and confident. Standing atop the crumbling cliff of a narrow passage, he waved his right hand, his broad and sturdy arm seemingly capable of lifting the weight of the world. The assailants surrounding Xuan Yue quickly ceased their assault.

On either side of the narrow passage, the black flags symbolizing Xuanyuan fluttered in the wind. An overwhelming number of soldiers in dark armor appeared to darken the azure sky above.

Xuan Yue gracefully descended, firmly clutching her Snow Blade, the tide of darkness washing over her instilling a sense of despair.

Xuanyuan Hao—how could he be here at this moment? After more than a month apart, she never imagined they would meet under such dire circumstances. Everything had turned against her; she, Feng Xuan Yue, had become a captive in Xuanyuan Hao's snare.

Her heart raced as she cast a cold glance at each person beside her. Each face, like her own, was smeared with blood; their eyes, when they met hers, radiated loyalty and affection. They approached her step by step, encircling her like a protective shell. Fully aware of the peril, they forged ahead without hesitation. How could such individuals betray her?

"Take care of Yu Yao and the others. If anything happens, retreat to the Wu Hui Valley," she commanded. The scouts from Xi Luo Village had failed to gather information; she had received no word of Xuanyuan Hao's arrival in Bai Chu, let alone this location. If anyone had surveyed the area previously, her people would not have remained oblivious. Xuanyuan Hao must have only recently arrived and was likely unfamiliar with the terrain. With ambushes ahead and behind, retreating to Wu Hui Valley was their only option.

Xuan Yue lifted her gaze towards the tall, imposing figure of Xuanyuan Hao in the distance, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "Xuanyuan Gongzi, it seems we truly are fated to meet," she remarked, her voice laced with a hint of mockery.

Her amused tone was unmistakably charged with tension.

"Xuan Yue, there is no second way out of Chasing Wind Valley. The Cangqing Mountains behind you are also ambushed by Xuanyuan's soldiers."

Though she had anticipated such an outcome, hearing it from Xuanyuan Hao's lips deepened her sense of hopelessness.

Did Xuanyuan Hao intend to grant no escape for his enemies? After the disastrous defeat at the Bi Luo River, was he truly seeking a chance for revenge? But whose chance was this, and who had informed him of her movements?

"Oh?" Xuan Yue drawled, a playful smile gracing her lips. "So, you're saying there's no escaping today?"

Her clear eyes resembled the cold, emotionless ice and snow atop Xuan Yue Mountain as they met his dark brown gaze, displaying an unyielding calmness.

"Xuanyuan Hao, considering you once held affection for me, can you truly bear to take my life?"

Xuanyuan Hao stared at her, silence stretching between them until he suddenly burst into laughter.

Could he truly bear to see such a spirited woman perish? Unfortunately, she did not belong to him. If she were merely the queen of the Feng Kingdom, he could tolerate it, but she had become the queen of the Lan Kingdom, holding the lives of hundreds of thousands of Xuanyuan soldiers in her hands, even Cen Can had fallen at her feet. In just a few months, she had turned Xuanyuan's world upside down. Such a woman could not be left unchecked; was he truly so reluctant to let her go? Each day and night spent yearning for this moment was a gamble he was willing to take.

"If you willingly return to Xuanyuan with us and send a letter ensuring that the Lan King and Feng Kingdom surrender, we guarantee your safety and that of your companions, who shall enjoy wealth and glory henceforth."

"I spit on that."

Green Pearl scoffed, disdain etched on her face. "What kind of righteous heroes attack a group of defenseless women? We are merely rough folk, accustomed to hardship, and likely would not relish the riches you promise."

Yue Ying pointed at Tang Ji Li. "We desire a unified world, but only if your Xuanyuan kneels before our princess. If you possess the ability, let us engage in an honorable contest."

Xuanyuan Hao did not contest her words, instead fixing his gaze on Xuan Yue. "Have you made your decision?"

In the eternal struggle for supremacy, only the victor is hailed as king, while the vanquished are deemed traitors. Winning grants even the most unscrupulous methods a sheen of honor in history, whereas losing results in either death or subjugation. For Xuanyuan Hao to bow before Lan Yixuan was as good as death; even if his tactics were vile, they paled in comparison to Xuan Yue's cruelty. They had lost countless soldiers, and sacrificing a few more for revenge was a small price to pay.

"And what of you?"

Xuan Yue turned to address the forty-odd individuals behind her.

"If death is our fate, we shall not surrender."

"To fight alongside the princess, even death is a sweet reward."

"Princess, we will protect you."

Xuan Yue let out a soft laugh, her lips curling into a smile as she gazed at Xuanyuan Hao. "Xuanyuan Hao, did you hear that? They refuse your offer."

Snow Blade pointed directly at Xuanyuan Hao. "You want my life? Come and take it if you dare."

She was Feng Xuan Yue, the queen of the Feng Kingdom and the queen of the Lan Kingdom, a role model for the citizens of both realms. Even in death, she would not yield.

With that, she sliced through the swirling sands, the blade of light carving a path in the ground, the flying dust blinding the pursuers.

"Run!"

Xuan Yue shouted as Yue and others assisted the injured Green Pearl and the rest, making their way towards the Wu Hui Valley.

Xuan Yue retreated several steps, drawing two bamboo tubes from her robe. Even in the daylight, the vibrant colors were strikingly vivid, the popping sounds resonating through the air, seemingly capable of traveling great distances on the wind.

Through the swirling sands, Xuanyuan Hao caught sight of her bloodied face, the grime only serving to enhance the brilliance of her eyes, making them almost impossible to gaze upon.

"Xuan Yue, the bowstring of a bow, the moon of the bright night."

Xuanyuan Hao closed his eyes, oddly recalling her casual confidence upon their first meeting—a glowing orb that irresistibly drew one's gaze, regardless of the distance.

"Young Master."

Ji Yun Li tugged at his sleeve, anxious. This woman was a calamity; with three hundred thousand troops, they had lost more than half. But if they could claim the life of the Feng King in recompense, they would not have truly lost.

"Fire!"

A chilling voice escaped through clenched teeth.

"One must be willing to sacrifice," he had resolved from a young age, aspiring to unite the realm as a benevolent sovereign, diligent in governance, impartial in reward and punishment, surrounding himself with wise advisors while shunning the unscrupulous. He would remove any obstacles in his path without a moment's hesitation.

From the very beginning, such an outcome was destined. Perhaps in this world, only you are worthy of me, yet it is not solely I who deserves you; thus, mutual destruction was inevitable.

"A distress signal—something has happened!"

Xinyue abruptly sat up on the icy stone in Wuhui Valley, seizing her spear and dashing outside, prompting the others to hastily follow suit.

Arrows rained down from all directions, a relentless barrage that effectively blocked every possible escape route.

"Shields!"

This secret mission had involved very few; Xinyue never anticipated that an ambush awaited her upon her return.

"Bang! Bang! Bang!"

The sharp arrows struck the shields, producing violent clashes.

"Princess, we must leave," Bai Pingting urged, tugging Xinyue's hand as they retreated toward Wuhui Valley. Though the distance was not great, it felt as though they were separated by mountains and rivers.

"Ah!"

"Ah!"

They were but a handful, and the shields offered little protection against the relentless assault, while those who had followed her were falling one by one.

"Yueying!"

Xinyue cried out, yearning to rush forward but was restrained by Bai Pingting.

"Princess."

Yueying lay on the ground, blood seeping from the corner of her mouth. She managed a smile, gazing up at the sky, so blue and clear, reminiscent of the day she had been brought back by adults—a day of such fine weather. How old was she then? Perhaps only five, when she had been abducted by traffickers and forced into a theater, enduring countless hardships.

"Yueying!"

"Sister Yueying!"

Ya'er and the others shrieked in anguish.

Yueying smiled and glanced at them, her gaze finally resting on Xinyue.

She extended her right hand to clutch her chest, realizing she could no longer share laughter with her former sisters, nor could she remain by the princess's side to protect her. The sorrow was overwhelming. Taking a deep breath, the pain that coursed through her body dulled somewhat; she pushed against the ground, grasping a fallen shield in a desperate attempt to rise. As the arrows rained down, one pierced her chest, spilling a pool of blood onto the ground. Yueying collapsed, facing away from Xinyue, clutching the shield in her hand, a silver spear poised at her heart, her lips stained with blood yet bearing a faint smile.

Since joining the women's army, her life had revolved around archery; over a decade of arduous training had led her to this moment of flawless precision, yet she had never imagined she would fall victim to another's arrow.

Those years had been grueling, yet no one had whipped her, she never went hungry, nor did she lose sleep. So many had surrounded her, and that was true happiness.

"Sister Yueying!"

"Ya'er!"

Xinyue shouted, seizing Ya'er as she attempted to rush forward.

"Young Master."

Ji Yunli observed Yueying, astonished. He could not comprehend what kept her standing; though grievously wounded, she somehow remained upright, clutching the shield, desperate to protect that person.

"Arrows!"

Xuanyuan Hao extended his hand, squinting, his gaze fixed on the direction where Xinyue had fled.

It was precisely because of this that I cannot allow you to remain.

You harbor no ambition, yet the men around you do. Why are you not mine? Why do you not stand by my side? Why are you so merciless, burning tens of thousands of my Xuanyuan men?

"Princess, be careful!"

Lvzhu turned, just in time to see Xuanyuan Hao loosing three arrows at Xinyue. Without a second thought, she threw herself forward, arms outstretched. Xinyue gasped, her eyes widening in alarm, fear rushing through her like a torrent.

"Don't!"

Xinyue lunged forward, channeling all her strength into her right hand to deflect the arrows soaring toward them, her other hand gripping Lvzhu's shoulder.

It was midday, and Yilan had just finished lunch, preparing to rest. Over the years, she had never been in the habit of napping, but in order to recover swiftly and return to Xinyue's side, she knew she needed to rest well. However, as she lay on the edge of her bed, her eyelids fluttered incessantly, anxiety gnawing at her. Unable to find solace, she rose, only to hear the piercing sound of gunfire.

A low tone, elongated like a drawn-out note—if one were not familiar, they would scarcely notice.

Startled, Yilan looked up to see an alarming red streak across the sky, reminiscent of flowing blood, draining her pale face of color.

"What is it?"

Jin Mo approached, noticing Yilan's distress, and inquired softly.

"The princess is in danger."

Yilan grasped Jin Mo's hand, her palm icy and slick with cold sweat, trembling.

"I must go protect the princess!"

Yilan returned to her chamber, swiftly sheathing her dagger at her waist, neglecting everything else in her hands, and turned to leave.

"You're not well enough; you mustn't go out now."

Jin Mo intercepted Yilan, blocking her path. "Your Highness is skilled and astute; she will surely be safe. If she cannot handle the situation, your presence would only lead to futility."

Upon hearing the phrase "lead to futility," Yilan's complexion grew increasingly pale, almost translucent under the sunlight.

"She is not your princess; it's easy for you to say that."

Impatient and longing to sprout wings to fly to Xuan Yue's side, Yilan was tormented by the urgent signal from the Feng army, which had never been used unless absolutely necessary.

In her distress, she spoke without thinking, and upon seeing Jin Mo's darkening expression, she realized her mistake. However, she had no time for apologies; she maneuvered past Jin Mo with resolute determination.

Even if her journey led only to her demise, she would press on without hesitation. Their lives had long been intertwined with that of the princess, and with Green Pearl and Ya'er there as well, she could not bear the thought of being without them. Even if she encountered a lover destined for eternity, joy would elude her in their absence.

"She is my mistress."

Jin Mo grasped Yilan's arm. "Let me first send someone to scout ahead. If danger truly awaits, it would be better to seek assistance than to make a needless sacrifice."

Yilan regarded Jin Mo, calming considerably. He was right; if the danger was insurmountable for the princess, her solitary venture would merely add another to the toll. With thirty thousand Bai family soldiers in Lian City, there should still be time to respond.

Within the Snow Orchid Palace, incense wafted languorously, and gauzy veils danced in the air.

Blood—there was blood everywhere, the vivid red suffusing the world.

Banners soaked in crimson, dismembered steeds, and yellow sands stained by blood, while the surrounding flora was indistinguishable from its original hue. The bodies strewn across the ground were pierced with arrows, each slight figure a reminder of womanhood, some faces familiar, while others were complete strangers.

"Xuan Yue!"

"Xuan Yue!"

Lan Yixuan, growing frantic, turned over the bodies facing the azure sky, hastily and carelessly wiping the blood from their faces. Their eyes, wide open, appeared as if refusing to close, yet their lips bore the trace of a serene smile.

Not Xuan Yue, not Xuan Yue. Lan Yixuan quickly scanned the surroundings, finding only a mountain of corpses and rivers of blood.

He ran, shouting, and suddenly caught sight of a glimmer of white—only a small spot amid a sea of crimson, with arrows lodged in his back, shoulders, and waist.

"Yue'er."

Lan Yixuan crouched down, calling softly, hesitant to reach out. After a moment's indecision, he finally dared to turn her over.

"Young Master."

"Young Master, what's wrong?"

Lan Yixuan's eyes flew open, his hand brushing against the cold sweat on his brow. The scenes from his dream were vividly etched in his mind, chilling him to the core—a dread deeper than when his mother had left this world.

"Lei Yun, I must go to Ye City."

Lan Yixuan accepted the towel Lei Yun offered and wiped the sweat from his face.

"Did you have a nightmare, Young Master?"

But was it merely a nightmare? That dream felt alarmingly real, leaving his heart restless even now. If he could not see Xuan Yue safe with his own eyes, he would never find peace.

"An envoy from Feng has arrived."

"From Feng? Announce them!"

Lei Yun took the towel from Lan Yixuan, soaking it in water, and retrieved a letter from his sleeve. "The envoy left only a letter for you."

Lan Yixuan glanced at Lei Yun and took the letter from his hands to open it.

This was the second time Lei Yun had witnessed such a profound emotional upheaval in Lan Yixuan; the calm smile that never faltered was now replaced by pallor, his gentle gaze filled with shock and apprehension.

"What's wrong, Young Master?"

Lei Yun asked anxiously, worried by Lan Yixuan's demeanor. What could have unsettled him so deeply aside from matters concerning Xuan Yue? Was something amiss with her? No, it was an envoy from Feng.

"Lei Yun, I must visit Feng. You will handle matters in Lan for now, and send Lei An to Ye City. I need to ensure Xuan Yue's safety."

"Green Pearl, what's wrong with you?"

Xuan Yue and Ya'er supported the injured Green Pearl, retreating to the Valley of No Return.

"Sister Green Pearl, please don't scare me."

Green Pearl, supported by Xuan Yue, sat upon a large stone in the dark cavern, her face pale and translucent, devoid of any vitality.

Green Pearl smiled faintly, gently stroking Ya'er's head, allowing her to lean against her. Her eyes fixed intently on Xuan Yue. "Princess, I feel very happy."

Had that arrow struck the princess, she could scarcely bear to imagine the horror. They could all perish, but the princess must remain unharmed. For years, that had been their unwavering belief. Grateful for the princess who had granted them a second chance at life, they were ever in awe of her deeds. To die for her would be an honorable fate.

"Please, don't speak just yet."

Xuan Yue felt tears welling, and indeed, they began to fall. Her voice choked as she wept, her tears spilling swiftly. She understood that the lives of so many rested in her hands; she shouldn't allow herself to be so vulnerable. Yet, witnessing so many perish for her sake brought her immense sorrow.

They could have lived if only she had followed Xuan Yuanhao's orders, if only she had sent a letter to Lan Yixuan, leading to the surrender of both Feng and Lan. But she could not; she already felt deeply remorseful towards Lan Yixuan, having chosen her brother over him. Could she truly now cause him to lose his kingdom and bow to Bai Zhanfeng? For such a proud man, what would happen if Feng and Lan truly surrendered? If it were before, he might have been lenient, but after the Biluo River campaign, Feng and Xuan Yuan had become adversaries. This was no longer a mere battle for dominion; to quell the grievances of the people, he would undoubtedly strike against the citizens of Feng and Lan. She could not let the people of both nations be engulfed in flames of war.

"Sister Ping Ting, please check on Green Pearl."

Xuan Yue stepped aside to make room for Bai Ping Ting.

"Xin Yue should die for failing to provide timely assistance."

Xinyue and the others retreated into the valley, kneeling on one knee before Xianyue.

"Xinyue, you have done exceptionally well."

Had it not been for their unexpected arrival, they would not have had even the chance to retreat.

"Princess."

Bai Pingtian looked at Xianyue, her troubled expression already revealing the outcome.

"Milady, please check on Sister Lvzhu again. She has always been in good health; no matter how I struck her, she would bounce back the next day. It's just one arrow—she will surely survive."

Ya'er cried out, "Sister Lvzhu, Sister Yueying and the others are gone! Please don't leave me! I promise I won't steal your dried bayberries anymore; I'll let you bully me, okay?"

Ya'er and Lvzhu shared the same tent; being younger, Ya'er was treated like a sister by Lvzhu, who always indulged her. They often played and fought together with Yilan, forming a deep bond.

Upon hearing her words, others couldn't help but shed tears as well.

Ten years of shared laughter and hardships had made them cherish their hard-won friendships even more; they were closer than real sisters. Losing so many at once was unbearably painful, especially witnessing their loved ones slowly slipping away—this struggle was more agonizing than an arrow piercing their own hearts.

In that moment, the valley echoed with sorrowful sobs. They were reluctant to let go, yet powerless, fully prepared for the possibility of sacrifice.

Every life inevitably ends; some are heavier than mountains, while others are lighter than feathers. Rather than succumb to illness and die in bed, they preferred a glorious end. They were never timid women; they were merely heartbroken to see their once vibrant sisters leave one by one—a pain that cut deeply.

Xianyue turned away, not surprised by the outcome. She had witnessed Xuanyuan Hao's archery at Zhao'an; three arrows, all capable of inflicting a fatal wound. Even she would not have survived.

With excessive blood loss and no timely treatment, even Jun Pin Yu would be powerless to save her.

Taking a deep breath, she quickly wiped away her tears and turned back, with Bai Pingtian yielding her position to Xianyue once more.

"Lvzhu."

Xianyue forced a smile, aware that it likely appeared strained, almost indistinguishable from crying. But how could she falter now? She needed to be strong; at such a critical moment, she must shoulder her responsibilities. Otherwise, what would become of those behind her? And what of those sisters who had already sacrificed themselves—would it not be in vain?

"Lvzhu, thank you."

Tears brimmed in her eyes, stubbornly refusing to fall. She reached out, gently wiping away the blood at the corner of Lvzhu's mouth.

"Princess."

Lvzhu grasped Xianyue's hand, a warm smile illuminating her pale face, radiating joy and satisfaction. "We ought to be the ones thanking the princess. Had it not been for you, I would have perished long ago. Over the years, I've come to know Ya'er, Yilan, Yueying, Xinyue, and Lvy; we are as close as sisters. Sometimes I find myself smiling awake from dreams of our times together. I am truly grateful to you, Princess. I never knew how to repay your kindness, but now I feel I have finally done something worthy for you."

Xianyue embraced Lvzhu, nodding vigorously, her throat constricted as if choked by something. She struggled to voice her thoughts. From the beginning, her intention in having Sister Pingtian find these individuals was never entirely pure. Why were they so good to her? The realization struck her like an arrow, and her heart ached.

"In the past, the noble always spoke of the princess to us. I always imagined you must be a kind-hearted woman; how else could you take us in? When I learned that the princess and the victorious Xianyue at the Pan City conference were the same person, my admiration only grew. Upon meeting you, I found you were somewhat different from my expectations."

"What is different? Do you think I behave crudely, merely eating and sleeping, no better than a pig?"

Lvzhu laughed, shaking her head. "Not at all! You are the most outstanding woman in the world; no one can compare to you. You are like a radiant orb, the center of attention wherever you go. Even if surrounded by thousands of troops, I believe you could still make it out safely."

Lvzhu's expression was resolute, filled with confidence. She believed that the other sisters would fight to protect the princess's safety.

Xianyue couldn't help but smile, tears she had held back began to flow, dropping onto Lvzhu's face and hands. "Yes, even if surrounded by thousands of troops, I will ensure everyone leaves this place safely because I have so much left to accomplish. I won't fall; I haven't defeated Xuanyuan yet, nor unified the realm. I want to ensure the people of the Phoenix nation, who raised you, live in peace. I won't let your sacrifices be in vain. I will also seek retribution against whoever revealed our whereabouts to Xuanyuan Hao. I know Lvzhu's dream is to traverse the world like me, righting wrongs and punishing the wicked, becoming a gallant heroine. I will make all your dreams a reality."

"Indeed, Princess, you can do it!"

Lvzhu nodded, wanting to wipe away Xianyue's tears, but her hand faltered before it could touch her face, powerless to lift.

It was said that the princess once aspired to be a heroine but relinquished her freedom and dreams due to the burdens of responsibility. Therefore, Lvzhu wished to fulfill that dream for her. Her life had been like drifting duckweed; it was because of the princess that she had family, a home, and a sense of belonging. Regrettably, that dream could not be realized now, but in her next life, she would become a heroine, avenging the wrongs and enjoying the freedom of the world.

"Sister Lvzhu."

Ya'er looked at the unconscious Lvzhu and rushed forward to embrace her, crying uncontrollably. The others rushed to Lvzhu's side, kneeling beside her, joining in the weeping.

"Is there any water?"

Xianyue tore a piece from her clothing, dampening it to clean Lvzhu's face. Ya'er remained silent, weeping as she brushed Lvzhu's hair. Bai Pingtian removed the arrow from her chest and staunched the bleeding.

"Is there a place to hide?"

Xianyue bent down, lifting Lvzhu. "Take me there."

"Queen of the Phoenix Kingdom, I, Wang Xi, regard you as a hero. You had best come out now if you wish to have any hope of survival; otherwise, do not blame the flames for their ruthlessness."

Upon hearing Ji Yunli's voice, Ya'er and the others were poised to rush out, furious that the inferno had not claimed the lives of these treacherous fiends.

"No one is permitted to throw their life away."

Xuan Yue's piercing gaze fell upon those eager to charge out, her hands clenched into fists at her waist, anguish etched across her features.

Ji Yunli's eyes were fixed on the cave's entrance, where a pile of kindling lay stacked, while behind him, dozens of soldiers held torches aloft.

Xuan Yuanhao waved his hand and sighed, "Why must you be the queen of the Lan Kingdom?"

Yet now, even if she were not the queen of Lan, nothing could alter the fact that the soldiers of Xuan Yuan and those distinguished generals could not die in vain.

"Princess, their forces are already in pursuit."

Bai Pingting glanced towards the entrance, casting a calm look at Xuan Yue.

"I know."

Xuan Yue laid Green Pearl down on the original large stone, allowing her to recline: "Green Pearl, I'm sorry."

"They intend to drive us out with fire."

Of the more than two hundred who had emerged, fewer than two hundred remained, standing tall beside Xuan Yue, their gazes serene.

Xuan Yue drew forth Xuepo, cutting a piece of cloth from her inner garment, as the others followed suit, pouring a little water onto the fabric, and trailed behind Xuan Yue: "We will move forward; even if this Valley of No Return is indeed a dead end, I shall strive to survive."

Outside, Xuan Yuanhao had already commanded the fire to be lit. The cave, already stifling, was quickly engulfed in smoke that spread everywhere, causing the people to cover their mouths and noses as they hastened their steps.

"There is light ahead."

Xuan Yue pointed forward and sprinted out. Hearing her voice, the others felt a surge of joy; in that dark cave shrouded in swirling smoke, the faint glow filled them with a sense of hope and resurrection.

"Princess."

The foremost Xuan Yue was grasped by Bai Pingting: "Let me scout ahead."

Xuan Yue shook her head and grasped Bai Pingting's hand: "If there truly is danger, does that mean Sister Pingting is of no consequence?"

She did not wish for harm to befall any of her companions, especially not Sister Pingting. With the relentless blows they had endured, she feared that she might not withstand further loss.

Beyond the cave lay a vast expanse of broken walls and an unfathomable abyss, shrouded in swirling white smoke, an endless sight. Opposite, a valley lay some dozens of meters away, desolate and barren, the cliff face a dilapidated yellow.

Though outside the air was warm and springlike in April, teeming with life, here, there were no signs of vitality—only a gnarled ancient tree, stripped bare of leaves, rooted in the soil.

"Princess."

Bai Pingting surveyed their surroundings, confirming that indeed, as someone had foretold, this was a dead end.

The terrain here was open; while they would not be suffocated by smoke, should they encounter pursuing enemies, escape would be futile.

"Remove the silkworm thread from your waists."

"Understood."

The group lowered their spears, retrieving the silkworm thread from their belts, as thin as hair, gleaming like weaponry, yet strong and resilient.

"Xinyue, Sister Pingting, you will weave the silkworm thread together. Ya'er, prepare my bow; I will shoot the objects across."

"Do not rush. The cave is confined; the smoke will not dissipate quickly, and Xuan Yuan's forces will not enter for the time being. We have ample time; everyone rest here for a moment."

"Princess, it's ready."

Xuan Yue took the woven silkworm rope from Bai Pingting, tugging it to test its strength, nodding in approval as Ya'er handed her an arrow. Xuan Yue secured one end of the woven thread firmly to the arrowhead, stepping back a few paces, channeling her strength into her arm, letting out a muffled grunt as a sharp pain shot through her left chest. If only Yueying were here. With a double release, the arrows soared straight towards the opposing cliff face.

Crouching down, she wound the other end around a tree several times, pulling back to confirm it was secure before turning around: "Ya'er, Qing Shui, you two go first to see if the arrowhead is secured to the wall on the other side."

"Princess, let me go."

Xinyue eyed the tear-streaked face of Ya'er, filled with concern.

"They are the most suitable for this task."

Those two strands of silkworm thread were thin, requiring not only skill but also courage and agility; beneath them lay a chasm of unimaginable depth—one wrong step could lead to their undoing.

"Is there any silkworm thread left?"

"Just one strand remains."

Xinyue handed the last piece of silkworm thread to Xuan Yue.

"Ya'er, you go first."

As she spoke, she placed the thread into Ya'er's hands, treating her as a sister, gently patting her face: "Do not be afraid; keep your eyes forward and hold the rope tightly. I will ensure your safety."

"Princess, let me go first."

Qing Shui said softly, just as she reached for the silkworm thread from Ya'er's hand; however, Ya'er had already stepped to the edge of the abyss: "I will go."

"Ya'er, keep your eyes on the path ahead, and do not look down."

Even without a fear of heights, the sight of this sheer cliff would surely instill fear within her heart. She was still so young, even younger than herself, yet despite the terror, she must press onward, just as she did—despite the sadness and oppression, she could not allow herself to wallow in despair.

Ya'er spread her arms wide, her balance surpassing that of anyone else. Her petite frame was incredibly agile as she followed Xuan Yue's instructions, her bright eyes fixed on the horizon as she gradually approached her destination.

She had traversed even thinner wires than this in the past, with the night's bonfire flickering beneath her, where her dear sisters stood ready to catch her should danger arise.

Fear was not absent; a fall would mean irrevocable disaster. Gripping the silk thread tightly,Ya'er took deep breaths, imagining her sisters standing below, encouraging her.

With Ai Lan, Green Pearl, and Moon Shadow by her side, and so many others cheering her on, she felt bolstered by their presence. Green Pearl had sacrificed her life for the princess; what were her own trials in comparison? For the sake of the princess, she too could be extraordinary. No matter what, the princess must survive to avenge her fallen sisters.

The others stood behind, their eyes fixed intently on Ya'er as she drew nearer, the distance to her goal diminishing, her palms slick with a thin layer of sweat.

Xuan Yue's heart raced, her spine stiffening, hands gripping the silk thread tightly, unwilling to slacken for an instant.

"Princess."

Ya'er turned to Xuan Yue, waving at her with a beaming smile on her youthful face. Xuan Yue exhaled, the weight in her chest lifting slightly, her legs weakening and trembling as she almost fell to the ground.

"Princess, I will cross too."

In a similar manner, Qing Shui followed suit.

"Princess, there is no problem."

Xuan Yue nodded in acknowledgment, pointing at the two slender strands of silk that were no thicker than a thumb. "Bridge."

Following Xuan Yue's orders, the group lay down on the silk, constructing a bridge with their bodies in this dire predicament. "Sister Ping Ting, Xin Yue, lead the others across."

"What about you, Princess?"

"I will follow shortly."

Bai Ping Ting stood resolutely behind Xuan Yue, "I will go with the princess."

Xuan Yue made no objections as Xin Yue took the lead, everyone trailing closely behind, eyes fixed forward. With each person that safely arrived, Xuan Yue's smile grew wider.

A sudden sound, though not loud, captured Xuan Yue's attention. She turned to see the withered tree to which the silk was tied; its roots were silently breaking free from the ground.

Xuan Yue gasped, and Bai Ping Ting, standing behind her, noticed the anomaly as well. Both rushed forward to embrace the swaying tree.

Just as someone was about to cross, seeing Xuan Yue clutching the withered tree prompted others to assist. On the opposite side, the others detected the disturbance; the two strands of silk shook violently, throwing off the person in the center, who lost their balance and fell. The entire Wuhui Valley erupted in screams.

Those who had formed the bridge, facing the unfathomable abyss below, mostly shut their eyes. The sudden swaying startled them into opening their eyes, revealing the swirling mist, like clouds that would never dissolve. The panic-stricken cries were once their most familiar sounds, instinctively instilling fear and the pain of losing comrades, causing their hands to tremble violently as they grasped the silk.

In an instant, so many companions had been lost to her.

"Everyone, stay calm."

Xuan Yue fought to suppress her own rising panic, forcing herself to sound steady.

"Princess, hurry across."

Bai Ping Ting quickly regained her composure, her voice rising in alarm as she looked at Xuan Yue. The others, hearing her, snapped back to reality. Yes, they must ensure the princess reaches safety.

"Lady, you and the princess must cross together; we can hold on."

Most had already crossed with Xin Yue, leaving around twenty people behind. Xuan Yue recognized the urgency; the roots below were not entirely exposed, and they could still hold for a while longer.

"Princess, move quickly."

"Princess, please come over!"

Ya'er, Xin Yue, and the others were on the verge of tears from their desperation.

"Sister Ping Ting, let's go."

Xuan Yue grasped Bai Ping Ting's hand, her gaze lingering on the young women who bit their lips, fixated on the withered tree, their eyes brimming with sorrow and guilt.

"I'm so sorry; I truly am."

She could not die; she could not allow Bai Ping Ting to perish either. In just one day, far too many had departed from her side, vibrant lives extinguished in an instant—all because of her. She felt she could not bear the weight any longer.

"Do not let go; swing across from this side. Xin Yue, catch the silk and pull them up."

With her hands slightly outstretched, like a swift swallow, Xuan Yue moved swiftly, racing against death. If she failed, only doom awaited her. But at this moment, she could not die; she must not allow herself to fall.

"Ah!"

The dry tree, as if releasing an underground spring, burst forth from the earth, soaring through the air in a parabolic arc, while those clinging to its trunk were caught off guard and flung into the air. The bridge builders, following Xuan Yue's orders, held onto the silk tightly, yet some still could not withstand the violent jolt and fell.

"Pull!"

Xuan Yue let out a sharp cry, her voice thick with emotion, and, using the leverage of her feet, she leaped across to the other side.

Death, for a fleeting moment, felt alarmingly close, a terror more profound than the abyss itself, filling her heart with dread, for these people were perishing for her sake.

For Lan Yi Xuan, she could repay with her sincere heart and genuine feelings, but how could she repay these lives?

"Princess."

Before those on this side could celebrate Xuan Yue's safe arrival, a sudden tremor jolted her, plunging her into a chilling realization—sister Ping Ting?

Whirling around, she was met only by the sight of Bai Ping Ting's plummeting body, her gaze fixed upon Xuan Yue, her lips curving into a gentle, tranquil smile.

"Ping Ting!"

Xuan Yue cried out in desperation, suddenly remembering that she had given her silk thread to Ru Yue, and had not retrieved it after forming the bridge.

Bai Ping Ting tilted her head, seeing nothing, her eyes closed, her hands gripping tightly the jade pendant gifted by Feng Jiu Lan. Just as she prepared to throw it, her descent abruptly halted as someone caught her waist.

"Princess!"

"Princess!"

Bai Ping Ting and the others gasped in unison.

Xuan Yue drove her snow-white blade into a crevice of stone, while her left hand clutched Bai Ping Ting's belt. The soft earth, unable to bear their weight, caused both women to slide downward, ultimately halting in mid-air.

"Princess."

Xin Yue and Ya Er watched as Xuan Yue descended, their hearts sinking alongside her, as if they had already plunged to the valley's depths. A moment of distraction caused them to loosen their grips, leading many bridge builders to follow suit.

"Protect the princess!"

A voice rang out, resolute and somber, echoing in their ears long after.

"Xin Yue, don't worry about me. Ru Yue, throw the silk to Sister Ping Ting and pull her up!"

Xuan Yue glanced down at Bai Ping Ting, who lay suspended in the air, her belt unable to hold out much longer. "Sister Ping Ting, are you alright? Don't be afraid. When you see Ru Yue throw down the silk, grab hold. They will pull you up."

"But what about you, princess?"

Bai Ping Ting lay flat, unable to see Xuan Yue's face, acutely aware of the dire situation.

"I can hold on."

Xuan Yue gritted her teeth, but before she could finish, a cracking sound filled the air. She steeled herself, recalling her injuries from the fall in Xi Luo Village, where she had wounded her left chest. Though she had recuperated for over a month, she was far from healed; the recent struggle had depleted much of her energy, and now her wound had reopened.

"You're lying to me, princess."

Bai Ping Ting's voice remained steady.

Xuan Yue adamantly denied it: "No, I can hold on. Ru Yue, hurry and throw it down!"

"It'll be ready soon."

Ru Yue, at the edge of the cliff, bowed her head, struggling to untie the silk around her waist. Her hands trembled with urgency, and her voice was choked with emotion.

"Princess, you're bleeding!"

"It's just a minor injury, Sister Ping Ting. Hold on."

"Princess, I've untied it."

Xuan Yue replied with an affirming hum: "Sister Ping Ting, did you hear that? It's all ready. Once we get out of here, I'll have someone take you back to Feng Country. Your brother has you in his heart; he just worries about me. Once you return, he will surely take you as his consort, and you will be the only princess of Feng Country. Lan Country will unify the realm, and I will be the queen of this world, living happily with Lan Yi Xuan. Then, I'll find the finest doctor to heal your brother's illness, and you will have a family of your own, blissful and happy, just like all of us."

Bai Ping Ting's tears fell freely as she removed her golden hairpin, fiercely tearing out a few strands of hair and entwining them with the warm jade pendant in her palm. Suddenly, she laughed with a dreamy expression, only to have another drop of blood fall upon herself.

"Princess, it's done."

"Ping Ting, did you hear?"

Bai Ping Ting responded affirmatively, tightly gripping the hairpin and pendant: "Princess, if it comes down to just one of us living, it must be you."

At this moment, they were suspended over two zhang from the cliff's edge, and with the princess covered in injuries and losing so much blood, how could she possibly endure?

Excessive blood loss felt like this, Xuan Yue found herself growing increasingly hazy, responding instinctively to clutch Bai Ping Ting tightly, realizing the weight of what Bai Ping Ting had just said, she suddenly came to her senses and gasped: "Sister Ping Ting, what are you planning?"

"Princess, we're ready over here."

Xin Yue had already pulled up everyone from the silk thread, looking at Xuan Yue still on the cliff, she called out: "We're coming to save the princess."

Bai Ping Ting thrust the jade pendant and golden hairpin she had held tightly into Xuan Yue's left hand, at that moment, the belt Xuan Yue had clung to snapped.

"Ping Ting!"

"Deliver this to His Highness for me."

"Ping Ting, this is my sister. Isn't she beautiful?"

Under the pear tree, the seven-year-old prince cooed to the infant princess in the cradle, as the pure white petals of the pear blossom drifted down like untouched snowflakes.

"Ping Ting, you must protect Yue Er well from now on. Don't let anyone bully her, understand?"

"Mm."

"Princess," she whispered, "I was only four when I left the palace, the same age as you were then."

So young, yet so deeply in love with the prince, whose heart was as pure as the pear blossoms and brimming with compassion and mercy.

"Princess."

Yar crouched, gazing at Xuan Yue, who sat on the ground, lost in thought and tears over the jade pendant and golden hairpin entwined in her hair. She grasped Xuan Yue's hand and wept aloud.

"Princess, the lord would be heartbroken to see you like this."

Xinyue knelt, her voice trembling and choked with emotion.

Xuan Yue remained silent, her own sorrow mirrored by the tears of those behind her. In the Valley of No Return, they had lost dozens of sisters, and several more remained on the other side, unable to cross over. So many lives had truly been lost this time.

"I know."

Xuan Yue lifted her gaze to Xinyue, wrapping her arms around Yar, gently patting her shoulder before turning to face the sorrowful faces behind her.

She understood that their pain was no less than her own, yet she persisted through her anguish for the sake of her own heart.

"Princess!"

From across the chasm, the starlit sky and others called out in unison, suddenly kneeling before her.

"Starlit Sky, Water Green, Condensed Blue."

As she spoke, Xuan Yue sniffled, tilting her head back to keep her tears at bay.

"If Xuanyuan's army breaks through, you should surrender without hesitation."

She hoped that Xuanyuan Hao would spare them, recalling their past ties.

"If they use you to threaten me, I will not compromise. You must not blame me then."

As she spoke, Xuan Yue covered her face, letting her tears flow freely.

"How could that be?"

Starlit Sky smiled through her tears, bowing her head thrice in gratitude towards Xuan Yue. "Princess, thank you."

After speaking, Starlit Sky pushed against the ground, standing up and whispering with a smile, "On the road to the underworld, we will not be alone; how wonderful."

She took a few steps back towards the cliff and suddenly jumped off.

Xuan Yue gasped, rising to her feet, her vision blurred by tears. "What are you doing? What are you doing?"

Water Green, Condensed Blue, and the others followed suit, smiling at Yar as they leapt into the abyss.

There was no panic, no screams—only a profound stillness.

"Sister Starlit Sky!"

Yar rushed forward, kneeling at the edge of the cliff, weeping bitterly.

"Sister Condensed Blue!"

She cried their names, while Xuan Yue watched as one after another, they fearlessly jumped from her side without hesitation, plunging into the darkness.

Fear, unease, and an indescribable pain enveloped her. Deep down, she had known this fate, hadn't she? How could they allow her to bear this burden alone? From a young age, she had danced with death, cherishing life, but now they chose to sacrifice themselves for her sake.

Yar's voice was hoarse from crying, still kneeling at the cliff's edge, while Xuan Yue leaned against the rocky wall, lifting her weary eyes to Xinyue. "Can I have a moment of solitude?"

Her voice was hoarse and filled with longing.

"Princess."

Yar collapsed into Xuan Yue's embrace, sobbing uncontrollably. Xuan Yue patted her shoulder, blood trickling from her lips. "Do not worry; I will not do anything foolish."

Sitting on the ground, Xuan Yue curled her legs, resting her chin on her knees. Her tear-filled eyes were hollow and lost, yet within them burned a flame of determination.

"I cannot let the sacrifices of Green Pearl, Moon Shadow, and Sister Condensed Blue go in vain. I refuse to abandon you; Yar, I must survive—I will survive, to avenge them and fulfill their wishes."

With a heavy fist, she struck the ground, blood seeping from her fingertips. She knelt, unleashing a roar of anguish and despair, like a wounded beast yearning to rend the enemies that had harmed its kin.

Everyone had departed.

Leaning against the great stone behind her, Xuan Yue held the jade pendant and golden hairpin that Sister Condensed Blue had left behind, still warm against her cheek. She buried her face and wept loudly.

"Sister Condensed Blue."

Her cries echoed, as if her heart were blocked by an unseen force, filled with discomfort and anxiety.

"Do you know? Brother has always cherished you. Do you remember the last time you were hurt? When I told him, he was beside himself with worry."

In this moment, Xuan Yue finally understood the grim truth behind the beauty of life—so many vibrant souls, like blooming flowers, had been snuffed out in an instant for her sake, leaving nothing but bones. She could not fathom how many more lives would be lost below; she dared not think about it.

She had only just begun to forge connections with them, genuinely caring for these individuals who had silently supported her through the years, walking beside her through the valleys of life's struggles.

"Sister Condensed Blue, you have worked so hard over the years. Everything you've done for me, for my brother, for the entire Feng kingdom, I, Feng Xuan Yue, will forever remember."

Xuan Yue patted her chest, feeling the dull ache of her wounds.

"I have vowed that you will be our kingdom's only princess consort. I swear I will personally deliver these tokens to my brother, along with Starlit Sky, Moon Shadow, Green Pearl, and everyone here. For your sake, even if I must tread upon mountains of corpses, I will live on and leave this place."

Xuan Yue knelt on the ground, unaware of how much time had passed, her limbs numb, pain radiating throughout her chest. Tears mingled with the swirling yellow dust as she carefully cradled the items left by Sister Condensed Blue close to her heart.

Leaning against the stone wall once more, she closed her eyes, haunted by the hauntingly tragic smile and the screams that refused to fade from her ears.

There existed a group of souls who had forsaken their lives for her.

Her shoulders bore an even greater burden than before; her life was no longer solely her own.

"Princess."

Yar and the others emerged, squatting beside Xuan Yue, their innocent faces marred by a weight of sorrow and despair that should not have been there.

"I'm fine."

Xuan Yue embraced Yar, guiding her to sit beside her. "You all should rest as well."

Her voice was hoarse, her expression resolute, and her eyes held a steely determination, reminiscent of a phoenix bathed in blood.

"How long can our rations last?"

"There are enough provisions for three days, barely holding out for five."

Xuan Yue nodded, her complexion pale, heavy with grief yet devoid of despair. Her tear-stained eyes shone brightly, like stars heralding dawn.

Leaning against the wall, she stood tall and moved through the crowd, her radiant gaze reminiscent of winter sunlight, warming and empowering all who were near.

"I understand you are all hurting. If you feel like crying, then cry freely. You still have each other to lean on."

At her words, the tears that had just been stifled surged forth once more, as they clung to their sisters and wept openly. After holding back for so long, they felt ready to explode; yet they hesitated, recalling Yar's words—that the princess must feel a sorrow deeper than theirs. If they cried together, it would only add to her guilt.

Xuan Yue quietly observed them, moving among them, patiently waiting for them to express their grief.

"The Bai family has stationed thirty thousand troops at Baili Tun. I have already sent an urgent distress signal; Yilan will surely see it. I believe she will find a way to help us. Baili Tun is not far from here; within three days, reinforcements will arrive. I have also sent a signal to Changtian Mountain Villa, so Bai Zhanfeng will soon learn of our predicament. Even if the Bai family troops do not reach us in time, it takes just about five days for reinforcements from Ye City to arrive. We have enough rations."

"Princess."

Yar spoke, resting her head on Xuan Yue's thigh. "I trust Sister Yilan."

"Even if they do not come, we will risk our lives to ensure your safe passage from this place."

"Right, it's only a life!"

The others echoed in agreement.

Xuan Yue nodded solemnly. "I hope you all can continue to live."

Her voice was soft, yet it brought forth a torrent of tears from the crowd.

They too wished for their dear sisters to survive.

"Everyone is weary; let's rest for a while."

Xuan Yuanhao was thousands of miles away—how could he possibly show up here? She had come secretly this time, bringing only a little over two hundred people. Someone must have revealed her whereabouts to Xuan Yuanhao. Who was it? What was their intent? Such a vast army could not have entered Lian City unnoticed, which meant someone had aided them, and that person must be formidable. Xuan Yuanhao was not a member of Yanyu Tower; if he had indeed planted someone beside Bai Zhanfeng, would Bai Zhanfeng be able to arrive in time?

Xuan Yue closed her weary eyes, her heart tangled in chaos. She couldn't be certain if Bai Zhanfeng's people would arrive, but now, all she could do was trust.

Bai Zhanfeng, I sincerely hope you do not let me down this time.

Baili Tun was surrounded on three sides by mountains and one side by water, making it ideal for troop training. Thus, although Lian City was not a strategic stronghold, in such chaotic times it was often overlooked; nonetheless, thirty thousand troops were stationed there.

Yilan and Jin Mo departed from Xiluo Village, taking a shortcut and hastening their pace, finally reaching Baili Tun before darkness fell.

The setting sun bathed the lush pine forest in a hazy glow.

White tents stretched endlessly, and as night fell, bonfires flickered to life within the camp, creating an atmosphere of eerie tranquility, with only two or three patrolling soldiers in sight.

Seeing the snow-capped tents, Yilan felt a surge of relief. "We've finally arrived."

Just as she was about to advance, Jin Mo suddenly halted her. He surveyed the empty camp with furrowed brows and softly urged, "Wait."

Yilan stopped, turning to him, puzzled and displeased. "Wait for what? The princess is waiting for us."

Jin Mo held her hand tightly. They stood atop a ridge, thick trees concealing them, and their attire blending seamlessly with the foliage, rendering them nearly invisible.

"Don't you find it strange?"

Jin Mo's brow tightened as he pointed downward. Yilan leaned forward, realizing this vantage point was excellent—they would go unnoticed while observing everything below.

"Isn't this a military camp? Why are there no patrols at this hour?"

Yilan looked up at Jin Mo, sensing the same unease. The transition from day to night was a prime time for enemy ambushes; thus, vigilance was paramount. Back in Feng Country, her lord had conducted similar drills, which left a deep impression on her.

"There may be an ambush."

Yilan stepped back, hiding behind the tree, having already acknowledged Jin Mo's suspicions.

The princess's secret arrival had been hasty; they had been gathered at the last moment and had no prior knowledge of the situation.

The day the princess left Xiluo Village, she had informed the sisters outside, who were then made aware. In this remote area, nobody had previously paid attention; how could someone set an ambush just as the princess returned? There must have been a traitor. Perhaps someone was lying in wait within. However—

"Jin Mo, the princess can't hold out much longer. I must quickly summon reinforcements for her. Even if there's an ambush, I must take the risk."

After a moment's contemplation, Yilan made her decision. She stood up but was immediately pulled back down by Jin Mo.

He had anticipated her choice and did not stop her, instead indicating the water below, glimmering with a golden hue in the sunset, its brightness almost blinding. "Can you swim?"

Yilan nodded; all the women of Feng Army were skilled in water.

"Submerge quietly. If anything seems off, jump into the water. I'll be waiting by the lake."

Yilan gazed intently at the water's surface, gripping Jin Mo's hand tightly. "Thank you, Jin Mo."

She smiled at him, rose, and left without looking back.

The sun had set in the west, and the sky gradually darkened. The campfire flickered in the wind, its light wavering. In that moment of alternating black and white, Yilan's petite figure leaped gracefully onto the tent.

After scanning her surroundings, she finally fixed her gaze on the largest tent at the center. Descending swiftly, she found, as Jin Mo had said, an unusual silence enveloped the area. The few patrolling soldiers were a blessing for her stealthy mission.

"I've heard that the young lord of Xuanyuan is infatuated with the Queen of Lan. Are you certain he will take action? He promised me, after all."

As she reached the main tent and prepared to lift the flap, Yilan overheard voices within. Crouching low, she pressed her ear to the canvas and listened intently. To her surprise, a woman's voice floated out—gentle as water, yet tinged with a fierce edge that seemed oddly familiar.

"A true man should prioritize family and country. What are personal affections worth? Our young lord is known for his unwavering word and will surely avenge our comrades slaughtered by the Feng King. Since he has made a promise to the lady, he will see it through. If you doubt him, do not collaborate with us; after all, it was the lady who sought us out."

The mention of the young lord sent a jolt through Yilan's heart. Hadn't Jin Mo's informants described those soldiers as fierce and brawny? Could they be from Xuanyuan? How could Xuanyuan's army possibly infiltrate Lian City? And who was this lady? Where had she heard that voice before?

"I've heard that the esteemed young master Bai of Chu shares a close friendship with the Queen of Lan, having publicly declared ownership before all the heroes of the realm. This time, with the Queen of Lan's arrival, a proclamation was issued to stand with Bai Chu through thick and thin. Should Lan succeed in conquering the world, the Bai family would share in the glory. Why would the lady be willing to collaborate with us?"

Lady Bai? So it was the wife of the esteemed young master Bai. No wonder that voice seemed familiar; had she betrayed the princess?

It made sense now—how Xuanyuan's army could enter Lian City undetected, and why there was no one around at this critical moment.

"As long as Feng Xianyue is here, the young master will never notice my existence, Chen Ruoxi, no matter how well I perform."

This rationale made Yilan want to laugh, yet she was filled with rage. The conversation below became a blur, her heart raced with anxiety, and she felt an overwhelming urge to rush in and eliminate that woman. But it was too risky; those speaking were clearly sent by Xuanyuan Hao. Entering now would be tantamount to surrendering. Young Master Bai was still in the dark, and she had to reach Ye City to reveal the truth to him and persuade him to send troops to rescue the princess and the others.

Yilan pushed herself off the ground, rising to her feet, but anxiety over Xianyue's predicament made her dizzy. She stumbled, falling to the ground.

"Who goes there?"

Yilan's heart raced as she scrambled to her feet and dashed outside.

Hearing the noise, Chen Ruoxi swiftly pulled back the tent flap and rushed out. Upon seeing the familiar figure fleeing, her face turned pale, and she pointed in the direction of Yilan's escape, "That's Feng Xianyue's person! We can't let her get away!"

She covered her mouth with one hand and clutched her stomach with the other, determined to kill her. She must not let the young master learn of this incident.

The thought of Young Master Bai discovering the truth made Chen Ruoxi's legs go weak. She collapsed to the ground but quickly got back up, hurrying in pursuit of Yilan.

Yilan sprinted with all her might, but the two generals behind her were not to be underestimated. Xuanyuan Hao had assigned them to prevent any rescue attempts, and they were exceptionally skilled. They closed the distance as they chased after her, halting to take a deep breath before leaping to block Yilan's path.

"Prepare to die."

With a booming voice, one wielded an axe, striking down at Yilan with a thunderous force. Yilan retreated a few steps, drawing a flying knife to hurl at his hand.

"Ah!"

The man cried out as the knife struck home, causing him to drop the axe to the ground.

Yilan glanced around; the escape route to the lake was not far. She pivoted to the left, but the other assailant charged at her. She barely dodged, but felt a sharp pain in her right side as she twisted away.

Chen Ruoxi arrived just then, pointing at Yilan, "Kill her!"

"Those who wish to keep their deeds hidden must act accordingly. Lady Bai, your actions will soon reach Young Master Bai's ears, and when that happens, your fate will be far worse than never having captured his heart."

Yilan scoffed, fury igniting within her. This wretched fool would face consequences one day.

"I'll fight you!"

The injured assailant fell to the ground, while the other, axe in hand, advanced toward her. Yilan thought she was preparing to confront him in a desperate struggle, but she released her flying knife, aimed squarely at his chest. The man startled and dodged out of the way.

Yilan turned to take one last look at Chen Ruoxi and leaped, the sound of a splash echoing as she plunged into the water.

Chen Ruoxi was taken aback by Yilan's gaze, stunned in place. It was only when Yilan jumped into the lake that she regained her senses, glaring at Xuanyuan's two generals, "Two big men, and you let a girl escape? Useless! After her!"

Her pale face and once-bright, gentle eyes now twisted with fear and malice, she spoke breathlessly.

"We are generals of Xuanyuan, not your Chu forces. Please, Lady Bai, recognize this fact."

The commanding tone of their reply grated on her nerves.

"Rest assured, Lady Bai. She has sustained injuries to her waist. Although the waters of Lake Bai Li appear calm, she will not be able to endure such a distance. With such severe wounds, she certainly cannot make it to Ye City. I will gather people and search immediately."

"You're hurt,"

Yi Lan said, drenched and with blood soaking a large area around her waist. The rest of her body was also stained with a rosy hue. She leaned against a tree, her complexion pale, lips tinged with purple, trembling violently. Despite the approach of summer, the lake water felt icy cold to her.

As Jin Mo spoke, he prepared to remove his clothes but soon realized that his own attire was also wet, offering no warmth. "I'll start a fire."

Yi Lan grasped Jin Mo's hand, her extremities icy. "I'm fine."

Given her current state, how could she possibly be fine?

"Jin Mo, I beg you for one thing. This whole affair is the doing of that woman named Chen Ruo Xi, the wife of the Bai family's eldest son. She intends to kill our princess."

Tears streamed down Yi Lan's cheeks out of worry. "She knows I've uncovered her scheme and will soon send someone to pursue me. In this condition, I can hardly move and certainly cannot reach Ye City. Lady Bai knows me; even if I make it there, I may not be able to see Bai Gongzi. So please, I implore you to make that trip."

Her heavy breaths suggested that she might struggle to breathe at any moment. Yi Lan shook with cold, her teeth chattering.

"I will first take you to a safe place."

As Yi Lan held Jin Mo's hand tightly, she suddenly noticed someone approaching from a distance. Her eyes widened in alarm, and she shook her head, hot tears dripping onto Jin Mo's hand. "It's too late. You must hurry; you cannot let anything happen to the princess. I believe she will not let me and my sisters sacrifice ourselves in vain."

With a soft plop, the last tear fell onto Jin Mo's hand. Yi Lan rose and unexpectedly kissed his cheek. "The princess is your master."

Looking up, her tear-streaked face wore a tragic yet fulfilling smile. She released Jin Mo's hand and dashed away.

"There!"

All eyes were drawn to Yi Lan as she burst forth, and without hesitation, they chased after her. Jin Mo clenched his jaw, crouched in the distance, and suddenly heard a piercing cry from her direction. "Princess, I will avenge you!"

He closed his eyes and struck the tree with his fist, blood streaming from the impact. "Your master will surely avenge you."

"Feng Wang, I know you're inside. If you don't come out now, we will storm in!"

Five days had passed, yet the rescue promised by Xian Yue had yet to arrive, and their provisions had run dry. The reason Xuanyuan Hao and the others had waited outside for so long was to avoid any casualties, hoping that they would surrender willingly when their supplies ran out. They hadn't anticipated that these women had provisions sufficient for three days.

At this point, even if the people outside did not rush in, they could no longer remain there. With no reinforcements in sight and without food, they would eventually starve to death.

"Princess, what shall we do?"

Ya'er sat beside Xian Yue, her bright eyes filled not with fear of impending death but with a burning hatred.

"We will break out."

Once outside, they would take a desperate chance. Although the odds of escaping were slim, at least there was still a chance. If they delayed any longer, hunger would render them powerless. If the enemy broke in, sealing all exits and trapping them in a dire situation, that would truly be catastrophic. Even in death, she intended to take a few enemies down with her.

Xian Yue rose from the ground, her hands clenched into fists, cracking from the tension. She fell to her knees before the others. "I'm sorry. I, Feng Xian Yue, swear I will not allow your blood to be shed in vain."

Xian Yue was overwhelmed by a tumult of emotions—pain, discomfort, guilt. Looking at her palms, she felt a deep loathing for herself for the first time, her chest constricting painfully, making it difficult to breathe.

She had promised to survive, to live at any cost.

Outside Chasing Wind Valley, a throng of Xuanyuan soldiers surrounded the cave entrance, their gleaming spears obscuring the sunlight from the heavens, the surrounding air thick with tension and bloodlust.

"Will she come out?"

On a cliff overlooking the scene, Ji Yun Li asked the imposing figure beside him.

Truly, she was the queen of Feng Country. He had initially thought they would all perish in the valley, but he hadn't anticipated her resilience in finding a way to survive. Ever since the Battle of Birojiang, he had realized that her cunning surpassed that of any man. Fortunately, Xuanyuan had anticipated this and stationed a formidable force at the opposing cave entrance; otherwise, she might have escaped.

He had expected that after starving for a few days, they would surrender without a fight, allowing them to do so without losses. Instead, five days had passed with no one emerging from within.

Didn't so many people fear death at all?

"She will."

If she does not emerge, it would mean certain death for her. Feng Xian Yue would never simply sit idly by. There was still a glimmer of hope in breaking out. Even in death, she would take Xuanyuan's people with her, seeking vengeance for her fallen sisters.

"Kill!"

The roar rose like the charge of a thousand troops, fierce and overwhelming.

Xin Yue led more than fifty women out, clashing fiercely with the Xuanyuan soldiers. Their disheveled hair partially concealed their foreheads, and their garments were already soaked with blood. Despite their disarray, they commanded admiration and pity; how wonderful it would be if such brave and loyal women were on their side.

With swift, decisive movements, they struck at the enemies' necks, delivering fatal blows and splattering blood. Undaunted, they grew bolder with each clash, determined to avenge their fallen sisters and carve a bloody path for their princess, who must survive.

The flowing blood gradually collected in the valley, forming a small stream.

"Indeed, truly valiant."

Having been trapped for several days with no sign of rescue, their morale should have waned, yet they surged forward with an unstoppable momentum, their diminutive forms embodying the spirit of a hundred warriors.

Xuan Yuan Hao remained unaware of their past tribulations and thus could not fathom the depth of their loyalty to Xian Yue and their feelings for their fallen sisters. They had long since resolved to embrace death, burning their boats behind them, solely wishing for Xian Yue's survival.

"Retreat."

Xuan Yuan Hao waved a white flag, and the Xuan Yuan soldiers, who had still been engaged in battle, fell back in an orderly fashion, their retreat unbroken by the oncoming rush.

"Withdraw!"

Xin Yue shouted, and all her followers quickly followed suit, moving with a swiftness that far surpassed the disciplined Xuan Yuan troops.

"Release the arrows!"

Xuan Yuan Hao raised a black flag, and soon, individuals emerged from the cave, shields in hand, protecting Xin Yue and the others behind them.

"Archers!"

Xin Yue called out, and in no time, those behind her charged forth with bows drawn. An incessant rain of arrows began to fall, each step forward fraught with peril, as comrades fell around them. Yet, in that moment, no one had the luxury of pausing to grieve.

Sacrifice had become inevitable.

"Retrieve the arrows."

Xin Yue commanded, and the incoming arrows swiftly transformed into their weapons.

They quickly gathered the arrows littered on the ground, nocked them onto their bows, lifted their heads, and aimed: "Fire!"

The shield-bearers crouched low, while a line of twenty women stood proudly behind them, their hands calloused from wielding bows. The long arrows sliced through the air with a fierce whoosh, demonstrating a ferocity that surpassed that of many men, piercing through all resistance before embedding themselves in their targets' chests, delivering instant death.

These women had been personally trained by Yue Ying. Though they might not match her, they were certainly no less capable than the brawny Xuan Yuan soldiers.

"Ah!"

A continuous cacophony of screams echoed through the narrow canyon, as many Xuan Yuan soldiers plummeted off the cliff, their bodies colliding with the jagged rocks below, the sounds of blood splattering unmistakable.

"Young Master, such exquisite archery,"

Ji Yun Li exclaimed, deflecting arrows while marvelling at their skill. At a distance of fifty meters, they held no positional advantage; how could these women, as females, possess such immense strength? What impressed him even more was their unwavering composure in such a dire situation.

From a distance, Ji Yun Li observed the resolute faces, each embodying an unyielding determination that was unshakeable. He could almost foresee the outcome of this confrontation.

"The Phoenix King must be slain!"

He shouted, reading the hatred and derision reflected in their eyes—a chilling cry that seemed to resonate from the depths of their souls.

"Charge!"

Xin Yue raised her blade and shouted, and everyone surged from the cave, their disheveled hair and bloodstained garments rendering it impossible to distinguish one from another at a distance.

The Xuan Yuan army had retreated; they only needed to contend with the chaotic hail of arrows. Xian Yue was hidden within the throng, beside her stood Nuo Lan, who had just changed into new garments. The two women bore similar figures, and apart from the vermilion mark between their brows, their facial contours were indistinguishable. Even Xuan Yuan Hao, from afar, might struggle to recognize them.

"I have a plan to escape this place, but you may all end up sacrificing yourselves."

Xian Yue knelt on the ground, feeling selfish, yet she could not help it. She needed to bring her sister Ping Ting's belongings to her brother; she had to uncover the identity of the one who sought her death. She couldn't let those people die in vain; she had so many unresolved matters, how could she possibly die? Even if it meant bearing the heavy burden of mental shackles for a lifetime, she must live.

Xian Yue dared not raise her gaze, afraid to meet their eyes.

"Princess."

All the women knelt towards Xian Yue, their foreheads touching the ground: "We would gladly die a thousand deaths."

No elaborate speeches were needed; four simple words sufficed to express their unwavering resolve.

"Xin Yue, you lead the fifty or so of us to charge out first, but do not stray too far from the cave entrance. The Xuan Yuan army is fierce, but I believe they are no match for you. Xuan Yuan Hao will surely order the archers to fire. We've only brought bows, and our supply of arrows is limited; we will use theirs instead. With Xuan Yuan Hao present, it will be difficult to disrupt their formation, but when their ranks become slightly disordered, we shall break free. They have brought many steeds with them; seize a horse and flee. Understand? Do not worry about my safety; I will protect myself well. Focus on your own safety; Xuan Yuan Hao is not easily deceived. If there is even the slightest flaw, all our efforts will be in vain. Is that clear?"

"Understood!"

"Nuo Lan."

Xuan Yue shed her garments and presented them to Nuo Lan. "I know I am selfish, but I have no other choice." She was reluctant to utter apologies; even if she were to live a lifetime enveloped in regret and nightmares, she felt compelled to proceed.

"Princess, I am willing," Nuo Lan replied, changing out of her attire and donning Xuan Yue's garments. She twirled before her, tears streaming down her face, yet her lips curved upward. "Princess, can we not have war anymore? Fighting is truly terrifying."

Xuan Yue replied with a soft "Mm," her eyes brimming with tears as she nodded and embraced Nuo Lan. "I will bring this to an end soon."

"Princess, preparations are complete."

"Let your hair down to cover your forehead."

Xuan Yuanhao stood above, his amber eyes surveying the throng below—disheveled hair, bloodied garments, and faces caked with dirt. The only remnant of their former selves was their eyes, once clear and free-spirited, now steeped in hatred—an icy hatred that pierced through the familiar calmness that had once graced their gazes. Had he, in some way, extinguished that light? Why else could he no longer find those eyes?

Everyone surged toward a common direction, where the Xuanyuan soldiers mounted their steeds. A fresh wave of archers took their places, while dozens had already fallen. Yet, even amidst this chaos, no one dared look back.

"Shoot! Spare not a single one."

Ji Yunli could no longer concern himself with protocol; seizing a bow from a nearby soldier, he aimed at the direction of "Xuan Yue."

"Mount!"

Xin Yue commanded fiercely, and all rallied to protect "Xuan Yue" as they mounted, forming a protective circle around her.

"Ah!"

A sharp arrow whizzed through the air, striking Xin Yue in the shoulder.

"Xin Yue!"

"Elder Sister Xin Yue!"

"Don't worry about me; protect the princess!"

As Xin Yue spoke, she yanked the arrow from her shoulder, blood streaming forth. Such pain would be unbearable even for the strongest of men, yet she bore it without a flicker of distress.

Her heart had become numb; would she still be troubled by mere physical pain?

Xuan Yue, amidst the crowd, heard the anxious cries of those concerned for Xin Yue. Without a second thought, she mounted her horse, knowing time was of the essence. This was her choice, and she would pursue it without hesitation.

With each fallen figure around her, blood splattered across her body and face—though it was scorching hot, she felt an icy chill. Her hands and feet were cold, as if frozen, numb and rigid.

While none attended to their own safety, she understood they had been protecting her, whether surrounding Nuo Lan or standing by her side.

Xuan Yue dashed to Xin Yue, extending her right hand. Xin Yue turned, her gaze glancing over Xuan Yue with resolute determination. "Protect the princess and lead the way."

The arrow in her hand dripped with blood as she forcefully struck the horse's flank. "The rest of you follow me as a rear guard."

Someone had to confront the advancing Xuanyuan soldiers.

"Princess!"

A chorus of cries erupted, and Xuan Yue beheld Nuo Lan, who stood nearby, her white attire stained crimson. On horseback, they carried three people, and an arrow protruded through her chest, signifying a tremendous force and remarkable marksmanship.

The anguished yet sincere calls echoed her final farewell to Xuan Yue.

Xuan Yuanhao wanted to turn back, glare at him fiercely, and convey that which he could never attain—the one thing he could never possess, not even a backward glance.

Thinking of Xuan Yuanhao's name made Xuan Yue grit her teeth. In their unseen direction, the vivid blood red was a searing pain intertwined with hatred. Her hands gripped the reins tightly, blood seeping from her palms. There could be no forgiveness, no absolution.

"I will fight you to the end."

In the narrow passage, only one could pass through at a time. As someone appeared to escape safely, they abruptly turned their horses and charged back into the fray.

"Whoosh, whoosh."

The arrows whizzed past, their sound piercing through the air like daggers through her heart. First, it left a gash, then pierced her entire being. Besides Lan Yi Xuan and Feng Jiu Lan, others could inflict such devastating blows.

They returned for her sake.

Those desperate smiles flashed past her, akin to the fleeting bloom of a night-blooming cereus—here one moment, gone the next. She had a remarkable memory; how could she fail to remember this?

"Blood for blood."

As she stepped onto Xuan Yue's horse, a protective circle formed around her, the exit of the narrow passage lay ahead. If she could just pass this point, her skill would keep Xuan Yuanhao at bay.

"Xin Yue!"

At the passage's entrance, Xin Yue watched the distant blue figure fade further away. An arrow pierced her knee, and soon she could go no further; blood flowed from her chest, her arms, every inch of her. She gazed at the retreating form, then suddenly smiled.

"Elders, Moon Shadow, Green Pearl, did you see? The princess has departed; she will avenge us. Those who caused your demise shall not find peace."

"Ya Er."

"Xue Ying."

"Ah!"

Chaos erupted around her, the familiar yet haunting cries ringing in her ears. Xuan Yue clenched her teeth, her heart racing with the pounding hooves. She felt utterly numb, yet the pain in her left chest was unbearable. Was it from her previous injuries?

This was a path paved in blood, the lives of those who had truly cared for her now sacrificed. She tread upon their corpses; her life, no longer solely her own, bore a heavier burden, pressing down on her until she felt faint, breathless.

"Nuo Lan, are you alright?"

That voice caused Xuan Yue to whirl around abruptly.

In the sunlight, those eyes sparkled just as she first remembered—large, twinkling, and bright. The face, still unformed, resembled that of a child. Her body was riddled with arrows, not a single part untouched; the others were similarly afflicted.

To avoid arousing Xuan Yuanhao's suspicion, they dared not linger their gazes on Xuan Yue. Yet how could they solely focus on their escape, disregarding her?

"Nuo Lan, you're alright!"

A sigh of relief escaped her lips, and she smiled, radiating an incandescent joy that made her small face seem to glow as she stared at Xuan Yue, before tumbling from her horse.

"Ya Er!"

Xuan Yue leaped down, catching Ya Er as she fell, finally breaking into tears.

Why? Why was it that two hundred people had arrived, yet she was the only one returning?

"Princess, please don't cry."

Ya Er reached out to wipe the tears from Xuan Yue's face. "I'm very happy, Princess Elder Sister."

As soon as the words left her lips, Ya Er closed her eyes and fell into Xuan Yue's embrace, her lips curving upwards as if she were genuinely content.

Princess, I have longed to call you sister, yet every time I see your smile, I feel inferior. Our princess is such an exceptional person; how could I, a useless younger sister, ever compare?

"After her!"

Xuan Yue raised her gaze to the advancing Xuanyuan soldiers, carefully placing Ya Er down. Rising, she unsheathed her sword from her bosom and suddenly laughed—a light, delicate laughter, as if afraid of disturbing someone, she lowered her voice. "Will you give me your lives, please?"

It sounded like a negotiation, yet the tone was imperious, chilling enough to send shivers down one's spine.

Her blood-soaked garments concealed their original hue, and her flowing hair had turned crimson. She appeared a specter drenched in blood. Xuan Yue smiled, leaping forward as the icy aura of her blade, Xue Po, cut through the air, sending dust swirling. Severed limbs fell to the ground as she mounted her horse and galloped away.

If I do not die, Xuan Yuanhao, I will ensure your suffering is greater than death.

"Seventh Prince." Ji Yunli, trailing behind, looked at the bodies strewn on the ground, his face ashen.

"Haha!"

"Haha!"

Xuan Yuanhao suddenly erupted into laughter, a sound that, to Ji Yunli's ears, bore an undertone of despair and melancholy.

"Yunli, I have lost, I have lost."

Xuan Yuanhao gazed skyward, laughing ever louder, reveling in the irony that despite the many closing in, she had still escaped. He was indeed her vanquished foe.

"Seventh Prince, is it not just the Phoenix King who has fled? Xuanyuan remains, with a substantial army still intact. You are here; let us return, rally the forces. Everything will revert to how it was before; nothing will change."

Xuan Yuanhao brushed aside Ji Yunli's hand, staring into the distance at the emerald hills, his amber eyes heavy with an inescapable sense of defeat and frustration.

He had not anticipated that such a devoted and principled woman would sacrifice those lives just to survive this place. Truly, he did not understand her, and that is why he had lost.
