CHAPTER 10

Diego

"When exactly did that happen?" I was startled hearing that Serene requested the money.

"OK, I will see you when I get back," I responded, ending the conversation.

"Wow, I can not believe this," Nelly said, shaking her head.

"It is okay, honey; she will be out of our lives for good now; that is the only thing that would have made her come back and cause drama, you know," I said to Nelly, holding her hands as she laid the meal down.

"Yes, but I intended to use it for something different," Nelly explained, tugging her face.

"What? That is impossible, my darling," I told her in a quiet, calm tone.

"I am not sure why you are making such a big deal out of this. It is not like she wants the money. I thought I might put it to good use, perhaps invest in something worthy," I replied, her as she pushed away from the hug.

"I am afraid you can't.That money was intended for Serene, and I cannot accept it. It is hers, regardless of what she does with it. We have no right to even consider touching it, my darling," I said.

"Okay, come on. She did not want it, so what is the big deal? You and I both know she is not returning. It is not like she needs it—if she did, she would have taken it that day. I can not believe she took it." Nelly continued to

"It doesn't matter if she comes . It is all about being respectful. That amount was part of our divorce settlement. It is not for us to determine what to do with the Money. She refused it for personal reasons and has now requested the lawyer to deliver it to her; I just feel that he should have informed us before sending it," I answered Nelly.

"I do not think we are on the same page," he confirmed

"This is not about picking sides. It is all about doing the right thing. You are the last person who should be handling anything that belongs to her, especially now when you are going to have it by the dozen."

"I was only trying to make things easy for everyone, including you. She is gone from your life."

I could detect some stress in Nelly's voice when she informed me she had come from a really unhappy marriage. I could not risk making her feel guilty in any way.

"You know what I said," she said, her eyes drooping.

"No, and I do not want to know," she said, trying to get away, but I grabbed her by the waist and pulled her in for a kiss. "Nelly, I adore you," I murmured.

"That is a big lie, I do not think so," she remarked, leaving the room. I knew pursuing her would make matters worse, so I had to wait till she came around again. Time passed, and it was getting dark. Nelly had not returned yet. I was growing nervous, so I decided to follow her outdoors. I scoured the entire hotel but could not seem to find her. I was becoming increasingly concerned, and Nelly had even left her phone in our room, preventing me from contacting her.

I was so fatigued that I decided to stroll back to our room and prepare to submit a missing report. When I opened the door, I found the room completely black. I assumed I had turned off the light before leaving, so I immediately turned it on. Just as I turned around, my attention landed on Nelly, who was dressed exquisitely. Her dress flowed elegantly, and the deep yellow fabric that fitted her shape wonderfully, glittering slightly as it caught the light in our room. Her hair was exquisitely groomed, spilling over her shoulders and framing her.

She approached me as I stood by the switch, lost in thought. My attention turned as I saw her presence, and my breath caught slightly at how gorgeous she appeared. But it was not simply her looks that pulled me in—it was the gravity of her grin.

"I have something to say," she started, her voice firm yet laced with passion. She paused for a bit to gather her thoughts before proceeding. "I am really sorry for how I reacted before; I thought about it, and you were correct that money is hers; it is the least we could do for her now that she has given us serenity."

I quickly opened my arms, and she rushed into them for an embrace. I ran my hands through her hair and kissed her forehead.

"It is okay, you are the most important thing to me right now, and I would do everything to make you happy," I added gently.

I immediately changed and we proceeded to eat supper at the restaurant. The waitress delivered the menu and handed it to Nelly. "Are you sure you have everything?" Nelly inquired.

"Yes, my lady, we have everything here," The waitress answered.

"I see, OK, White truffle pasta please," Sofia remarked, handing them over after checking our drinks.

"I will be right back, my lady," The waitress said and went away.

Sofia was going to say something to me when her phone rang; she instantly picked up, and I hastily checked my emails in the meanwhile.

"What!" Sofia remarked while standing up.

I glanced up and stood up, worried.

"What is wrong?" I inquired, unsure what might be wrong.

"It is —is," She claimed that she was straining to talk.

"Say something," I implored.

"M—my aunt has been hospitalized, and my cousin has asked for money to pay the bills," she continued, tears in her eyes.

"Calm down. How much is it?" I asked her immediately.

"$50000" She answered.

"OK, email me her account number," I said, asking her to have a seat.

"I — I can not Diego, my emotions are all over right now," she said, a tear falling down her cheeks.

I was able to make her feel better after transferring the money to her relative. We ate our meals while discussing what we intended to accomplish when we returned to New York. We returned to our room and slept after having fun.

[A week later]

After being absent from the office for many days, Nelly and I drove to the airport, where our flight was scheduled to depart in 40 minutes. Everything was done just as we arrived at the airport, and we were on the plane, seated next to each other, in no time. The plane eventually landed, and we made our way out; just as we approached the greeting area, we bumped across Dr. Nelson, the doctor who used to check on Serene when she became pregnant.

The doctor remarked, "Good evening, Mr. Myers," as we approached him.

"Hello, Doctor Nelson," I said, beaming at him.

"I can not believe I am seeing you here. I just spoke with your wife a few days ago, and she and the—"

I broke him off and replied, "It is a shame the news came to you late, but she is my wife now, Doctor," I smiled at him signaling Nelly.

"W—what?" he questioned, puzzled.

"I believe this will be a topic for another day; please pardon us," I remarked, walking away with Sofia.
