Chapter Three - Diagon Alley

The house has thin walls and Petunia's room is below the living room and in the corner of her room, there is a hole that allows Petunia to hear the conversation.

- Robert I know that materials are expensive, we have the savings, and we will need at least a hundred pounds.

- A hundred pounds, Margaret? It's too expensive, we can't buy everything second-hand.

- Believe me, I didn't want to spend all that money on her either, but that's the minimum since we'll be buying the cheapest things, but it's only for the first year, the next ones will be cheaper, and we'll have to save up for Lily's materials since she won't have second-hand things.

- Well, at least Petunia will be away for the whole year and the three of us will be able to do things together.

Severus had already been to Diagon Alley a few times and at her request, he describes the clothes that witches wear, and she modifies her clothes to look like they come from the Victorian era, she makes shirts with huge collars with lace, balloon sleeves, thin gloves, and hair bows. 

Margaret congratulates her on her efforts to fit into the magical world, and she stresses that Petunia should tell everyone who asks that she has magical grandparents and uncles and emphasizes to her and Lily that they are both half-bloods, Petunia already had the impression that the magical world didn't like foreigners and now she's sure.

They wake up early to go to Diagon Alley because Mrs. Snape says it's the least busy time as families with lots of children tend to come after lunch, on meeting up, Petunia looks at Severus she's never seen the boy so happy and well-dressed, she wonders why Mrs. Snape neglects her son.

Petunia hated the Knight Bus, but unfortunately, she had to use it. She was still a little nauseous when they arrived at the cauldron, Lily and Severus were more euphoric than Petunia, and they rushed inside. 

Petunia takes small, uncertain steps on the cobbled street while, next to her, Lily claps her hands with excitement. 

She turns her head to see the face Snape is making as she tries to process what she sees. The colorful robes, the turbans, and pointed hats, the meowing of cats, the hooting of owls, and the croaking of toads.

It's exactly how she thinks magic should be. It's lively and vibrant, and although they want to explore the place, they're in a hurry because Mrs. Snape wants to buy everything before rush hour. 

The first place was the bank where they made the exchange she took the opportunity to make the exchange with her savings, as it was early there weren't many people on the street while they were walking Mrs. Snape pointed out to Petunia stores that could be useful and gave instructions on how to buy things she thought the first purchase would be the trunk, but they passed by, and then they went towards a store that sold second-hand clothes.

Lily and Severus stayed there to choose the clothes while the two adults went to buy the trunk, the cauldron, the scales, and a sewing kit because Petunia had insisted on it so much, that she had been given an extra galleon to buy casual clothes because she didn't have enough time to make them.

Twenty minutes later, the two women returned with the things they had bought. Mrs. Snape boasted that she had managed to buy three high-quality cauldrons, as the salesman didn't know their true origin. From what she said, the piece could be sold for thirty galleons.

Then it was quills and parchment to do their homework, it was going to be strange writing with the quills, Mrs. Snape had commented that there was a spell that cleaned ink, as they walked towards Ollivander's the street was filling up as it approached ten, fortunately, the store was empty Lily and Severus entered Ollivander's with her that Mrs. Snape mentioned was the best wand maker in Britain.

The store had small boxes containing wands, there were dozens of them stretching up to the ceiling, he recognized Severus immediately because he looked so much like his mother, Petunia wasn't sure if she liked Mr. Ollivander, he was very eccentric, but his wands were love at first sight! 

She tried a dozen before finding what the old wizard called 'the right fit', all of different lengths and circumferences, some decorated and some plain, some straight and narrow and some curved and wide.

He tried various kinds of wood until he realized that the popular wood was the right one. They tried wands with unicorn hair core and a dragon heart core. The wand maker seemed very excited when he brought out an old box, and she took the wand and it felt right.

- This wand was made by my father who made two wands with the same core I sold it a few years ago, maybe you'll find it at school.

When leaving the store, Petunia decided that the owner scared her a little because he looked like a psychopath.

For some reason that she didn't know, Mrs. Snape had to do something and left us at the ice cream parlor. She grabbed the passion fruit flavor and ate it quickly. 

Taking advantage of the opportunity, she went to the second-hand book store, she had seen fashion magazines that cost a few knuts. 

She entered the place where the woman at the counter didn't even mind her presence, Petunia went to the back of the store where she looked through the paper and decided which one she wanted to take. 

She heard the sound of footsteps behind her and when she turned her head she had to stop herself from running and hugging her husband and from the look on his face he knew it was her too. He went to her side and picked up a Transfiguration magazine.

- We only have a short time and my name is Asterion Weasley, I'm fourteen, and I'm in Gryffindor, what's the best time to send an owl?

- Petunia Evans, I'm eleven, and I'm going to Hogwarts, after eight in the evening.

The two of them wanted to talk more, but Lily came to fetch Petunia, just knowing that they would have each other was enough.
