Wade quickly walked over and put on the Sorting Hat, silently chanting in his heart, "Hufflepuff! Hufflepuff! I want to go to Hufflepuff!"
"Hufflepuff?" a faint voice said. "Oh, maybe you didn't hear the song I just sang. That's okay, I can sing a part just for you—where the people are just and loyal—"
Wade: "..."
He vaguely sensed something.
The Sorting Hat continued to sing: "The students of Hufflepuff are tough and honest—"
Wade: "..."
Alright, I get it, no need to keep singing!
The Sorting Hat: "Not afraid of hard work—"
Wade: "..."
This is getting a bit too much! Your voice is a bit too loud!
The Sorting Hat whispered: "Although Hufflepuff never rejects any student who longs for Hogwarts, there is a place more suitable for you...
Hmm—it's often hard for people to recognize themselves, isn't it?"
Wade quickly said in his heart: "I don't want to go to Slytherin!"
"Of course—" the Sorting Hat loudly proclaimed: "Ravenclaw—"
The second row of tables on the left started clapping, the applause was measured. Wade sighed inwardly, took off the hat, and walked towards the table decorated in cyan and blue.
—Stubborn Sorting Hat! So what if I'm not honest and hard-working enough? I just like making friends with people who are, is that wrong?
A few Ravenclaw students stood up to shake his hand. The leading boy said: "Welcome to Ravenclaw. I'm the boys' prefect, West Moore."
Another boy leaned over and said, "Your name is Wade Grey? Then you are well-suited for our house!"
"What do you mean?" Wade asked.
"Oh, Benson, don't tell that joke of yours," West said with a hint of exasperation, having realized what was coming.
Benson winked and said, "Because our house ghost is also named Grey—The Grey Lady."
Wade looked at him and after a few seconds slowly responded, "...Oh, so what?"
Benson: "..."
West pushed Benson's head back and said, "I've told you before, don't try to imitate the Weasley twins, you don't have the comedic genes."
Benson slumped over the table as if deeply hurt, looking entirely dejected. Wade found his current expression actually kind of funny.
He sat in his seat and looked around.
There was no need for introductions. In his eyes, every person around him had a name (or two) hovering above their head. However, almost all of the Ravenclaws were unfamiliar to Wade, probably because they were never mentioned in the original storyline.
The only exception was a very cute black-haired girl sitting not too far away diagonally—[Cho Chang]. She was watching the new students being sorted and didn't notice Wade's gaze.
He compared the people at the staff table with his memories—
Albus Dumbledore with his long silver hair and beard, Severus Snape with his sallow face and greasy hair, Filius Flitwick who was as short as a three-year-old, the eccentric Sybill Trelawney, the plump Professor Sprout, and Quirinus Quirrell with a face on the front and another on the back, which was actually Tom Riddle.
Of course, sitting at the Ravenclaw table, Wade was practically invisible. The professors didn't pay any attention to him.
The Sorting Ceremony continued.
"Michael Corner!"
"Ravenclaw!"
Before Wade, a blond boy named Anthony had been sorted into Ravenclaw and was eagerly greeting everyone.
Soon after, a boy with long black curly hair named Michael Corner joined them and sat next to Wade. Then, one of the Indian twin sisters, Padma Patil, was sorted into Ravenclaw, while her sister Parvati Patil was sorted into Gryffindor.
The number of new Ravenclaw students wasn't very large, only about ten in total. The new students observed their surroundings with a mix of nervousness and excitement until a name suddenly rang out—
"Harry Potter!"
The entire hall suddenly fell silent, followed by a buzz of whispers.
"Potter? Harry Potter?"
"Is it that Harry Potter?"
At the Ravenclaw table, even some of the aloof students who usually didn't pay much attention to the new students couldn't help but turn their heads and crane their necks to see the black-haired boy walking up to the Sorting Hat.
When he put on the hat, many people held their breath in anticipation. From Gryffindor to Slytherin, from Headmaster Dumbledore to Filch, the castle caretaker standing by the door, everyone was watching that dirty hat and the little boy whose face was mostly hidden beneath it.
The murmuring gradually quieted down.
Finally—
"Gryffindor!"
The Sorting Hat shouted, and the hall erupted into loud cheers and applause. The cheers from Gryffindor were the loudest, but nearly everyone at the Ravenclaw table was clapping too—something that hadn't happened for any other student during the sorting.
"I knew he'd be in Gryffindor!" Benson said seriously to West. "Of course Harry Potter would be in Gryffindor, where else could he go?"
"Shut up, Benson. Two months ago, you were saying Harry Potter is just a character from a book and didn't even exist!" West retorted, rolling his eyes.
As the last new student was sorted into Slytherin, Professor McGonagall took the Sorting Hat away, and Dumbledore stood up and spread his arms wide.
"Welcome!" he said. "Welcome to a new school year at Hogwarts! Before we begin our banquet, I would like to say a few words. And here they are: Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak! Thank you!"
Hearing this classic opening line, Wade applauded enthusiastically.
"What does he mean?" Michael, who was sitting next to him, asked.
"I don't know," Wade replied.
"Then why are you clapping?" Michael asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Isn't such a short speech worth applauding?" Wade countered.
Michael thought for a moment and agreed, "You're right!"
As the enthusiastic applause and cheers filled the hall, the once-empty long tables were suddenly laden with food—roast beef, lamb chops, fried potatoes, mashed potatoes, and more.
Although there were fewer vegetables, the aroma was rich, and everything looked delicious.
The students, who had been hungry for quite a while, immediately began to eat heartily. Once nearly everyone was full, the main courses disappeared, and the tables were filled with various desserts.
With their stomachs full, the students had to slow down and take their time, which also gave them a chance to chat with those around them.
The conversation among the new students naturally focused on their families and heritage.
A boy named Stephen said, "I come from a pureblood family. My mother was in Ravenclaw, and my father was in Gryffindor. I've already read all the school textbooks at home."
"And you, Wade?" someone asked.
Wade replied candidly, "My parents can't use magic."
"So magic must be a completely unfamiliar field for you?" Stephen said in a sympathetic tone. "Your studies at school might be a bit tougher."
"Yeah, I'll work hard," Wade said with a cheerful smile.
"Although I'm a half-blood, I don't think it matters whether you're pureblood or Muggle-born," Michael said to Wade. "Take my family, for example. My father is a wizard, but he's not as smart as my mother. She makes all the decisions at home."
