Ch 2 Growing Up

As the three boys started living with their grandparents, the years went by; the older couple taught the boys the ways of a hunter for their own protection. John came to visit now and then, but he mostly hunted for his wife's killer. He told them what happened to their mom against Deanna's wishes, but he wanted to give them the motivation to train as hard as possible so they would be safe when they came across the evil that is everywhere in this world.

Will took advantage of his future knowledge, so he became an author using the alias WW. He wrote the series of Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and a few other stories he knew would do very well in the future. Nobody knew who he was, except for his family and personal publisher, who never told anyone about him because of his generous monthly salary that would end as soon as anyone found out. To say that the books were a hit would be an understatement. He also invested some of the money he made in some companies he knew would be big in the future, and his plan to never have to worry about money for the rest of his life worked out perfectly. He had a lot to worry about from the supernatural threats he would face in the future as part of the Winchesters; he wanted to take care of the finances early, before the main story started in 2005.

In the years that passed, he made plans after plans based on his knowledge of the show, so he decided to keep the story as close to the original as he could, at least at the start.

His family, at first, didn't want to touch what they considered his money, but after a lot of convincing, they gave in. His father bought better hunter equipment, his grandparents used the money to move to a better location for the family's protection, and he also set up a bank account for his brothers. Sam wants to use it for his studies, and Dean saves it to follow in his father's footsteps in the future.

In his training, he also discovered he had some precognitive abilities. In combat, he could tell what his opponent would do a few moves in advance. Training this for live combat took some time, as he had to think a few moves ahead in the middle of the action. At least now, no one he knows can beat him in chess. He also had, from time to time, strong hunches about what his next actions should be to get what he desired very strongly; that's where the author idea came from, and it didn't disappoint.

He came to love his new family very dearly as he grew up. And as he was older mentally, he truly saw Sam and Dean as his two little brothers, so he swore to himself he would protect them as best as he could from all the tragedies they went through in the show.

Almost half of the times his dad would come to visit, they argued with each other, like when he turned 15. As he was born at the end of December, the family usually celebrated his birthday and Christmas at the same time, and on this occasion, John happened to come. He could count on one hand the times all of the family got together at the end of the year.

After the Christmas dinner, John wanted to look for his next case.

This annoyed him to no end, as the man had just arrived a few hours ago, barely finished eating, got up from his chair at the family table, and told them he would go to his room. The smile that was on Will's face after a very good dinner with his family disappeared as he saw the disappointment in Dean and Sam, who had been excited for days that their dad would come to visit for Christmas after not seeing him since Sam's birthday in May. So he got up as well, excused himself, and went after him.

When he got to his dad's room, the door was already locked, as John probably heard him coming and usually avoided him because he always tried to get him to act like a father for his little brothers. Unfortunately, the man treated his sons a bit worse than in the show; he's guessing it's because he barely sees them as they are growing up with their grandparents and not on the road with him. In spite of all his efforts, Dean is still daddy's little soldier, like in the shows, even more now that they don't see each other often, so he wants his dad's approval and attention more than anything.

Coming out of his musings, he takes a few deep breaths to calm himself and knocks.

"Dad, stop acting like a child; unlock the door."

A few seconds pass in silence, and he suddenly hears footsteps from the room, a mechanical click, then the door opens, and his dad stands there looking at him.

"Can I come in? I don't want to let Sammy and Dean hear us; it's Christmas."

His dad stays still, looking at him for a few moments, then he turns around but leaves the door open as he walks deeper inside the room. Getting in and closing the door behind him, he takes a look around his father's room, which is usually empty, and immediately he doesn't like what he sees. The bags are still untouched, so John didn't want to stay more than a day from the start, and on the night table, there is a half-finished bottle of whiskey. With no expression on his face, he asks:

"Tell me, John Winchester, do you hate your children?"

His father frowns and looks him in the eyes.

"Of course not! How can you say that?"

"Then why do you make them think you do? You went for half a year without a visit, just a few phone calls. Then when you came, you barely said two words to them, and now you want to leave again."

"Tell me, how could they not think that their father doesn't want to see them, or worse, hates them?"

"I didn't say I wanted to leave."

(Will started raising his voice)

"Don't lie to me! You think I don't see that you left your bags ready for you to leave ? You came for almost half a day and spent half of that time cooped up in your room doing what? Drinking?"

"Do you feel so bad being with your family that you want to drown it with alcohol? And please don't tell me that you didn't drink that whiskey because I was in here yesterday with Sam and Dean all day cleaning because they were excited that they were going to see their father after six months, and I don't remember it smelling like a bar."

Will took a few deep breaths to calm down because he knew he was going to start yelling if he kept going, while his father was just silent, not looking him in the eyes anymore.

"I know that every time you spend time with us, you remember Mom, but please don't let your children think that they are the reason you don't want to be here."

"Tell me, do you want Dean to get himself hurt or worse because of your behavior around him?"

John looks at Will, confused.

"Please don't tell me you don't see how he practically worships the ground you walk on. What do you think will happen when he starts hunting and he gets too daring just because he wants his dad's attention?"

There was silence for some time as Will could see that his dad was processing his words.

"Now you go wash your face, sober up, and come and spend time with your sons while you are here, not locked in your room in your own house, because it is your house just like the rest of us, even if you don't see it like that."

Will heads towards the door, and with his back turned to his dad, he says,

"Don't make me come back in here because I will. I will tie you up and drag you out if I have to."

He walks out and leaves the door open behind him. As he gets back to the table, there is a smile back on his face because he didn't want to worry the rest of his family.
