RENEE
I watched him closely, my eyes fixed on his face, waiting for him to spin another lie as easily as breathing. I may have let myself fall for him, but that doesn't mean I'm blind or foolish.
I had already done my homework. I'd had the little boy, Kaius, looked into. The deeper I dug, the more suspicious it all seemed. There was no trace of his mother or her family—nothing at all. That kind of absence didn't feel like coincidence; it felt like a cover-up.
If Kaius were truly just Kai's son, there'd be no need to bury the mother's identity so thoroughly. Something about this wasn't adding up, and I was determined to get the truth.
My voice was calm as I demanded answers, "I'm waiting, Miles. Who is Kaius Blackwood?"
Miles held my gaze, his jaw tightening with each passing second. He didn't even blink as he stared back at me. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, he spoke.
"You're right," he admitted. "He isn't Kai's son."
