I stood at the door of the only place that had ever felt like home.

 

After breakfast, we had split up to get ready for war, and now I was prepared to leave. My armor was fully engaged, the black dress a startling backdrop to the bright red cross on my chest. My white wings were visible but pressed tightly against my back, and I held Excalibur in my hand.

 

'Are you going to explain why the sword just appeared in my hand all of a sudden?' I asked Gabriel, not wanting to ask the question out loud.

 

'It comes and it goes,' shrugged the AI connected to my armor. 'When you need it, your nano will make it appear, and when you don't, they just absorb it back into your bloodstream.'

 

'Are you serious?' I hissed, not knowing how I felt about that.

 

'Think of it this way: at least you can't lose your sword. Whenever you need it, it will just be there.'
