"This was when you were in the juvenile detention center right?" Joolie asked her first question. Joel and Olivia were upset that Jolie had brought up Marvin's stint in Juvie, they didn't it was appropriate to ask so quickly, Austin and Brooklyn were both surprised to hear that Marvin had been in Juvie. Marvin and Jessica both had the same thought about Jolie, 'Bold'
"Yeah that was his first time playing some kind of organized sport" Jessica answered the question for Marvin with a smile, but before Jolie was able to ask her other question, Austin said, "You were prison, that's super cool dude"
"Hahaha, no he wasn't in prison, he was in Juive, which is a center for some troublesome kids" Jessica tried to make the idea as unscary as possible. Unfortunately, that allowed Jolie to attack Marvin's character, "So he's a troubled kid?" Jolie asked.
"Jolie!!" Olivia was quick to call out her friend for her rudeness, "What, she said it's a center for troubled children, and he was in it" Jolie was doubling down on her question. Jessica saw this and wanted to prevent any arguments from happening, "He made some bad decisions which is why he got punished, but he's truly a good kid" Jessica said to Jolie.
Jolie was about to say something else but she was interrupted by a loud *BEEP*, it was the oven. "Oh, my Pie," Joel said quickly getting up to head back into the kitchen. "If the pie's ready, we should head to the dinner table," Olivia said as she stood up.
Olivia pulled Jolie with her as she stood up, she wanted to give Jolie a stern talking. Jessica got up with Marvin and whispered in his ear, "What do you think?" Jessica asked.
Marvin made sure, everyone else was a good distance away before he said his next words, "I think the aunt is a bitch" Jessica quickly pinched Marvin for his cussing. "You can't blame her for being protective over her family" Jessica reasoned with Jolie.
At the dinner table, Austin and Brooklyn had taken their seats while Olivia and Jolie were setting the food on the table, "Please have a seat anywhere you like" Olivia said as she saw Jessica and Marvin still standing.
Marvin took his seat and couldn't help but gulp as he saw the spread of food on the table. There were mashed potatoes, fruits, bread, and Brussels sprouts. Jessica was still bringing out the main course which was steak. This was a regular dinner for the Kepplers but for Marvin, after spending two months in Juvie this was a meal from a five-star restaurant.
Olivia, Jolie, and Joel took their seats as everything had been served. "Hope you like it, Joe's super proud of his cooking" Olivia said as she dug into her meal. Marvin didn't honestly know where to start, he didn't even know the proper way to cut the steak, so he decided to watch everyone else.
He picked up his knife with his right hand and picked up his fork with his left. He placed his fork into the steak, the juices squelched out as he pushed his fork deeper in, he carefully cut with his knife. The meat was easily sliced and when Marvin ate he couldn't help but think, 'Amazing'
"You guys like it?" Joel asked, he had been watching Jessica and Marvin to see their expression to the meal. "It's absolutely delicious Joe," Jessica said, she was shocked at how well the meat was cooked and how tender it was.
Joel smiled at Jessica's statement, people enjoying his cooking was important to him, "Glad you enjoy it"
"I hope you don't mind me asking some more questions here, but have you guys handled Marvin's schooling?" Jessica asked, Olivia was quick to respond, she wanted to show Jessica that she and her family were very prepared. "Yeah, we've got him registered, all that's left is him signing up for classes. Joe's also the coach at the high school so if Marvin has any problem he can go right to him.
"Wait, he's coming to my school?" Brooklyn asked with shock, she knew that Marvin was going to be living with her for an extended period of time, but she was expecting to have him with her at school too. "Yes Brooke, he's gonna be there, and I expect you to help each other" Olivia said, a veiled threat of an ass whooping could be heard in her words.
Brooklyn didn't protest further, she could hear the threat in her mother's words. "Yeah, I'm the varsity head coach and if you want we can get you a physical and you can try out for the team," Joel said, he wasn't going to let the conversation fall flat.
"That would be wonderful, extracurricular activities will work great for him," Jessica said. During this entire conversation, Marvin was not paying attention, his sole focus had been on the meal Joel had prepared, 'Absolutely amazing' Marvin thought.
"I have another question, how was his experience in Juvie, did he get into any fights?" Jolie asked. The clank of eating utensils hitting a plate could be heard, Olivia had dropped her fork and knife as she stared at Jolie. 'We just talked about this' Olivia thought as she continued staring at Jolie.
Jessica saw this and she didn't want a repeat of the awkwardness that happened in the living room, so he quickly said "I think that's a question best answered by Marvin" Jessica tapped Marvin to get his attention.
"How was time in Juvie spent, did you get in fights" Jolie addressed her question to Marvin this time. Olivia may have thought Jolie's question to be rude, but she and everyone else at the table wanted to also know.
"You hit any guards?" Jolie pushed her question further and Marvin gave her a response, he looked up and directly stared at Jolie. His emotionless black eyes pierced deep into Jolie, she became a bit scared, to her it was like there was a monster hiding behind them.
Marvin was oblivious to the thoughts that were running through Jolie's mind, he was just simply annoyed by her continuous pestering, "I never stole from a guard, I did fight, and it wasn't a pleasurable experience" Marvin spoke the most words he had this night.
"Woah!, you fought," Austin said with excitement, the kid had a way of picking out specific things in Marvin's words, everybody else became more apprehensive after they heard Marvin was in fights in prison, but Austin became more excited and happy he met Marvin.
Marvin laughed in his head as he heard Austin, in a way Austin reminded Marvin of Tyler, they both had a weird excitement about Marvin. "Why'd you get into fights?" Brooklyn asked, she was intrigued by Marvin's character, he was a mystery to her and her teenage brain wanted to know more.
Marvin was getting done with his meal and he didn't want them to keep asking him questions. "I fought to survive, most people in there had nothing better to do than fight and were already prepared to live the next year of their life in prison. Any little thing would cause things to go south very quickly" Everyone remained silent as Marvin spoke.
"Like I didn't get to play during the Seven-On-Seven game because a fight broke out, two teams were playing against one another very roughly, and very soon things turned into a massive brawl" Marvin described the brawl that had happened, and the fight he had with Carlos and Jordan.
"In there, you have to be watchful of every action you take or suffer the consequences," Marvin said as he finished his meal. Everyone remained silent as they took in the information Marvin had just told them.
"Dude you're such a bad ass, you went against two guys. Austin broke the silence, he saw Marvin as an even cooler figure now, in Austin's eyes Marvin was a person who went to prison and got into a fight with the toughest people in there and then he beat al of them.
"Austin Language" Olivia snapped out of her silence as she heard Austin curse, she was thinking about what Marvin had just told her, 'What a horrible place for a child to be' she thought. Marvin's story bolstered her resolve to be his foster parent.
