"These guys really ended up as Obito's bait!"
Hiding in the shadows, Toshiro silently observed a Konoha spy, sensing the faint presence of Kiri Ninjas nearby. He rolled his eyes, already calculating how to handle these Anbu agents.
Though few in number, these Anbu members were still a significant nuisance. The Third Hokage had granted Toshiro considerable authority to assess the situation and act accordingly to rescue the spies.
Given this freedom, Toshiro saw no reason to hesitate. To prevent any complications or a messy situation where he'd have to rescue his comrades in the heat of battle, he decided to knock them all out and use his ink birds to carry them away.
If all went according to plan, these people would wake up near the border of the Fire Country. If they chose to return to Kiri, it didn't concern him—after all, they were just strangers to him.
Rescuing them was already a significant act of kindness on his part.
"That Uchiha Toshiro has resurfaced!"
"He's taken all the baits you set up!"
White Zetsu relayed the news to Obito in one breath, his eager expression suggesting he had more to say.
"Obito! Do you know what poop is?"
"..."
Obito's lips twitched in exasperation. He felt too weary to even bother complaining about the subordinates Madara had left him. At times, he seriously questioned whether he could ever complete the Moon Eye Plan with such a band of idiots.
These fools might just manage to get themselves killed by their own stupidity before the plan could even unfold!
"What now? What did he do after that?" Obito ignored the nonsense and cut straight to the point.
"No idea!"
"..."
Obito knew these guys were clueless, so he didn't even bother scolding them. Compared to this lot, the original White Zetsu and Black Zetsu were far more reliable.
"He took them straight into the sky. We couldn't follow... But those baits have our spores on them. It seems they're moving away from the village."
Realizing Obito wasn't in the mood for games, the White Zetsu trailing him quickly reported the specifics.
"If they're gone, then forget it," Obito replied, irritated. "And next time, speak clearly the first time!"
The original White Zetsu and Black Zetsu had now infiltrated the ranks of high-ranking Kiri Ninjas, carefully selected by Obito. When the time was right, these Kiri Ninjas would serve as a crucial asset in developing Akatsuki.
Meanwhile, Toshiro, who had already left Kirigakure Village and was now at sea, glanced at the Anbu carried by the Yamawashi and couldn't help but smile with satisfaction.
"I never expected such a rewarding outcome this time!"
He had sensed White Zetsu's presence on the Anbu earlier, but while still within Kiri, he refrained from taking any action to avoid raising suspicion. Now that they were at sea, he had no such concerns.
He only hoped that the occasional disappearance of a few White Zetsu wouldn't raise the alarm too soon.
"Yama, maintain your balance!" Toshiro instructed, knowing that for a cross-continental flight like this, the Yamawashi was the fastest option. Since he was on his own, summoning the creature directly was a straightforward decision.
"Understood," the Mountain Eagle responded.
With that assurance, Toshiro pulled out a sealing scroll and placed his hand on the body of one of the Anbu.
"How... how were you able to find us?" A voice suddenly asked. From the body of the Anbu, a figure began to emerge—pale-skinned, with one half resembling a human and the other half looking disturbingly like a twisted mass of excrement. White Zetsu slowly grew out of the other person's body, his expression filled with confusion as he stared at Toshiro's calm demeanor.
"You don't need to know that," Toshiro replied, his tone cold and dismissive.
After casually sealing them, Toshiro extracted three White Zetsu from the group, one by one. Obito had taken considerable precautions with these baits, embedding three white zetsu within them. This unexpected gain was significant for Toshiro.
"Finally, we've gathered enough materials for the experiment," he muttered to himself with satisfaction.
Previously, Toshiro had managed to acquire a small sample of White Zetsu tissue from Obito's body, but the quantity was minimal, forcing him to use it sparingly. Although he had attempted to cultivate the tissue, the newly generated samples contained fewer factors capable of advancing the evolution of his eyes and body.
Securing additional White Zetsu was a key objective of his mission in the Hidden Mist Village. It was one of the reasons he so readily agreed to the Third Hokage's request to undertake this mission. Without this, he might not have been so willing to accept the task.
Even Pakura hadn't carried such significance before, but now…
A contented smile played at the corners of Toshiro's mouth as if he had just recalled something delightful.
"Where is this place? Why am I here?"
It seemed that Toshiro's chakra had taken effect, or perhaps it was the removal of White Zetsu from their bodies that caused one of the Anbu to regain consciousness.
"Who are you?" the Anbu asked, disoriented.
After a quick scan of his surroundings, the Anbu's expression darkened. He reached for his waist, drew a Tanto, and pointed it at Toshiro.
"As expected of an elite trained by the Anbu... their alertness is impressive," Toshiro remarked, unfazed by the Anbu's reaction. With a glance at the Anbu through his Sharingan, he turned away and said calmly, "Now that you're awake, take charge of your colleagues. If they fall, it's not my responsibility."
After returning to Konoha, Toshiro handed over the Konoha spies to the Third Hokage and distanced himself from village affairs. His interest was far more piqued by the study of White Zetsu.
