We Could Still Be Friends

"How do you know it would never have worked between us when we didn't even try?"

"I don't need to try to know, Roy," Grace said softly. "There is simply not that kind of connection between us that could translate into the kind of relationship you want. But you are a great person and I hope we can still be friends."

Roy pulled away, sharply.  "Yeah, sure. Friends," he sneered, his voice dripping with sarcasm.

"Do you want to hear the sincere truth, Grace? I don't want us to be friends. I want to love you, to be your lover and for you to be my woman. That's what I want us to be, not friends. And if that's not gonna happen, then there's no need being friends."

"Bye, Grace," he turned and walked away.

Grace was shocked at Roy's extreme reaction and she reached out to stop him but her hands hung in midair as he was no longer writhing her grasp. She withdrew her hand slowly and shook her head sadly as her hands fell limply to her side.
