Not a Typhoon, but a Demon Wind

As Alice walked away, the two guards who had stopped her couldn't help but look towards Ignatius. "Base Commander, who was that girl?"

Worried that they might speculate or gossip, Ignatius stared back sternly, saying, "She's my niece-in-law. There's no need to stop her when she comes in the future."

The two guards quickly acknowledged.

In the middle of the night, Alice, still half-asleep, rolled over and suddenly opened her eyes in the darkness. She sat up, listening carefully as she faintly heard the sound of water splashing outside the RV, instantly alert.

Without waking Blanche, Alice silently stood behind the curtains. Outside the RV, two men were lurking around, one of them lowering his voice as he asked, "Can we climb up?"

"Keep your voice down, don't let anyone hear you," the man in the purple raincoat whispered, raising a finger to his lips.

Unable to find a way into the RV, the two men turned to head back towards the house. "We've searched everything, found nothing," the man in the blue raincoat frowned unhappily. "You said they had plenty of supplies at home, but that RV isn't big enough to hold much. Besides, how much could they store in that little space?"

"They eat meat every day, making our mouths water. There should be more than just a little bit of supplies," the man in the purple raincoat muttered, perplexed.

After lingering inside the house for a while, the two men decided to leave. "Forget it, let's go back. We might wake someone up, and losing the element of surprise would be a setback."

It turned out to be a wasted trip. They hadn't found any supplies, and they got soaked in the rain.

Unbeknownst to them, a corner of the RV's curtain had been lifted.

The next morning.

"What did you say? Someone came last night?" The family was stunned by Alice's words.

Atticus took a moment to find his voice. "Why didn't you call us?"

It was partly their fault too; the wind and rain outside sounded soothing, and they slept deeply every night.

"They were trying to steal food but didn't dare to move the RV for fear of waking us up, so they left. It's useless to wake you up for nothing," Alice said. Moreover, she could handle them alone.

"I think we should install an alarm outside the RV," Alexander suggested. Those two men yesterday had clearly been watching them for a while; they might come back tonight. Even if it wasn't them, there were others looking to take advantage.

Everyone started moving things up the mountain. Many things couldn't be taken away, so they were all sold cheaply to those opportunistic people.

Fortunately, Alice had a convenient space. All the beds, cabinets, and everything else in the rooms were taken away. They wouldn't give away a single needle or thread.

"I'll go install it for you later," Alice said to Alexander. She had already planned for this.

Arnold opened the car window, letting in the rain-soaked wind, then immediately closed it and turned back to them. "This typhoon doesn't seem to be stopping anytime soon. Looks like we'll be dealing with a month of wind."

"This isn't a typhoon, it's a demon wind," Alexander said grimly.

It felt like there was no way to live. Even if they didn't worry about food and drink, being unable to do anything was frustrating.

Atticus nodded in agreement. "People need something to do to keep living."After a pause, he continued, "Why not grow mushrooms? The rooms that are flooded are empty anyway. Just put up a couple of shelves, and you can grow mushrooms."

Alexander: "...Not a bad idea to just lie down."

But in the end, they were both dragged into growing mushrooms.

Alice also supported their idea. She took out a two-meter-tall shelf from the storage space and placed mushroom spawn in foam boxes on the top shelf. This way, they wouldn't be submerged in water, and the moist environment would be suitable for mushroom growth.

To prevent anyone else from sneaking in, Alice installed an alarm at the door. They placed more than a dozen shelves in three rooms in total. Atticus looked somewhat excited. "When these mushrooms grow, if we can't finish eating them, we can sell them or exchange them for other things."

Alexander, who had been feeling tired, felt a sense of accomplishment when he saw this scene.

They closed the doors to the rooms and returned to the RV. Alice lay on the bed reading a book, with a cup of coffee beside her, taking occasional sips.

"Boom!" The sound of a collapsing wall suddenly rang out.

Alice opened the window to look out, then quickly turned to Blanche not far away. "It's not our wall."

These days, they occasionally heard the sound of walls collapsing in the surrounding yards. They had become accustomed to it and were no longer as nervous as they were at the beginning.

"The shoddy construction at the base. Why didn't they build it better?" Blanche walked to the window and saw that their own wall was very sturdy and hadn't loosened. She sighed in relief.

Alice handed her a pack of yogurt cookies and smiled, "Maybe the budget was limited back then."

Blanche shook her head and went back to her own tasks.

...

At two o'clock in the morning, three figures descended from the wall. They seemed to be quite curious about the RV, standing outside and observing for a long time. After a while, they noticed that the room's door was locked, and a glint appeared in their eyes.

After running around so many places, they wouldn't leave empty-handed tonight, would they?

The three men approached the room door stealthily. Just as they pushed the door open, the alarm immediately went off.

They hesitated for a moment, seemingly not expecting there to be an alarm.

"What are we waiting for? Run!" one of the men exclaimed, and they sprinted off.

However, the yard was flooded, and they couldn't run fast at all.

Alice opened the car door and stepped out to see the three men in comical poses running outside. She immediately chased after them, followed by the Allen family, each wielding a stick and not even bothering to put on raincoats.

By the time they caught up, Alice had already subdued the three men.

"We weren't trying to steal anything, just looking around."

"We saw someone living here, so we were leaving. Please believe us."

"We didn't steal anything, you can search us if you don't believe us. Please let us go."

The three men, in pain from Alice's actions, could only plead to be released.

"Tell the truth, or none of you will leave. Don't forget, there's already one less person now, and no one cares about a few more bodies on the road." Alice deliberately frightened them.

The man in the middle turned pale with fear. "Sorry, we were blinded by greed and acted recklessly. We won't do it again."

The other two men also admitted their mistakes and promised to change.

"Are there many people like you?" Arnold asked coldly, putting on a tough demeanor.

The men honestly admitted, "As far as I know, many people are scavenging. The original owners moved up to the mountain, leaving the house unattended. Some people who benefited from it spread the word, and more and more people joined in. If you don't want to be harassed, you should consider moving to a different place."
