Mother and Daughter

Unlike my first day at work, the second was uneventful.

Lex wasn't in the office today due to a string of meetings, press conferences, and interviews.

Of course, these interviews were brought about by my engagement to Alexander and the news that Lex was never meant to be the heir.

Due to all the attention over this, Lex's office was busier than expected and everyone had done overtime.

Cassandra had to chase me out of the office when I asked for more work and volunteered to help.

"It's your first week, you're supposed to be learning the ropes, not overworking yourself, go home," she told me, forcing me out of the office.

It was already dark and there were very few cars left in the parking lot. I knew most of them belonged to the members of Lex's team.

As I approached my car, I was surprised when two people approached me.

"So this is where you've been hiding, you whore," I spun around, surprised to find my mother-in-law, Jason's mother, standing behind me, side by side with Janet.

The bitch probably told her about our encounter the other day and they decided to confront me.

I glanced to the side, noting the shadows slowly moving.

Lifting my hand, I signaled them to stop.

I could handle Janet and Jason's mother, they weren't a problem.

"What do you want?" I asked.

"I wonder which boss in Durfort Inc. you're fucking, he must be pretty high up to send Cassandra to get you," Janet spat. "Too bad he couldn't give you a better car."

I smirked, of course, I didn't have a lavish car right now, I did however, have more cars at home, a gift from Grandpa and Lex. Then there was the gorgeous white Rolls Royce that Alexander sent over as a welcome home gift.

It had come as a surprise to me that he remembered I liked white cars, or that I had been drooling over that particular model back when we were dating.

"Look, if you've come all this way to insult me then I think you should just both fuck off," I hissed at them. "You're wasting my time here."

In a classic move, Jason's mom lifted her hand to slap me, but she was too slow. I caught it before she could even bring it down to hit me.

"Pathetic," I spat as I pushed her away.

"You truly are a heartless whore!" Janet cried out.

"Really, Janet?" I asked, placing my hands on my hips, carefully studying the woman.

In the distance, I could tell some of my bodyguards were acting as if they were regular employees getting ready to leave.

"There is no one here to buy your pathetic act, Janet," I told her as I glared at the mother-and-daughter duo.

"I'm not the one putting up an act!" she said, glaring at me. "I needed your blood, I was dying. Jason called you, he pleaded for you to come help me—"

"If you were truly dying, Janet, you wouldn't be in the office the next day," I was sick and tired of them trying to manipulate me because I was a kind person, it was the same kindness that got me into this mess in the first place.

Janet looked stunned at my retaliation, I never answered back to her or to my mother-in-law, I had been the perfect meek wife to Jason, a contrast to who I truly was.

With the Youngs I was never truly myself, I constantly feared that Jason would reject me and send me away.

Looking back now I realized just how stupid and irrational that fear was.

'You do stupid things in love,' I thought to myself.

"Let's go, Janet," my mother-in-law said, pulling Janet back.

"But Mom," Janet whined.

"We're wasting our time here," my mother-in-law met my gaze and I did not back down. "We know she's a whore, I saw the car that picked her up that day. The truth will come out eventually and everyone will know just how she betrayed my Jason."

The corner of my lips tugged up, oh yes, the truth will come out and when it does I was certain that the Youngs would regret treating me the way they did.

"Fine," Janet said as she shook her mother's hold off of her and marched off.

"I will never forgive you for what you did to Jason and Janet," my mother-in-law told me as she pointed at my chest. "Your days are numbered, Lilibeth."

With that, she walked away.

When they were out of sight I let out a breath of relief before climbing into my car.

I couldn't help but think back to what had started my own downfall.

I was young, fresh out of university. I had been too kind and chose to help Janet when everyone else said the ambulance was on the way.

If I hadn't stayed, if I hadn't worried about my employee I would never have met Jason.

What would my life have been like if I hadn't met him, fallen for him, changed myself for him, suffered for him and his family?

Would I be married to Alexander now?

Before I left we were about to announce the engagement, so we are essentially picking up from where we left off.

It was transactional for him, it should have been for me at the start but I let my damn heart get the better of me.

I was young back then, I won't let it happen again, and I won't repeat the mistakes of the past.

My phone rang, and I was shocked to find his name flashing on the screen. It was as if I'd managed to summon the devil himself.

"To what do I owe the pleasure, Alexander?" my tone was dripping with sarcasm as I answered his call.

"You truly are intriguing, Lilith," his voice was pure seduction as he spoke over the phone.

"Care to explain what I did this time?" I challenged him.

"I saw you handle them, I was entertained," I froze in my car, quickly looking around, searching the vicinity.

Alexander Harris was fucking stalking me and I had no idea.
