The moment Safiya let those words slip out of her lips, everyone turned to her with wide eyes. Salam was the first to speak, "What do you mean?"
Mama walked up to her, gazing at the pendant. "Safiya, what is this?" she asked, her head slowly rising toward Safiya.
"It is a pend-"
"Of course I know what it is. I'm asking why it's glowing and why it's around your neck," Mama interrupted.
Taking a deep breath, Safiya realized she could no longer hide the truth. She would have to tell Mama and everyone everything, but for now, there was work to be done. The sooner they left this place, the better chance they had of saving lives. "I will explain later, Mama, but I need to-."
"Safiya," Mama's voice was tense, the courtyard now silent as everyone focused on Mama and the pendant. "I know what this is," she said, her teeth gritted, her voice quivering.
