What Are They Calling Me?

Under the late afternoon sun, the settlement was getting livelier by the hour. 

Both the deerkin and the elkkin were out and about. Some were busy gathering and chopping firewood for the bonfire. Plenty of the deerkin were occupied with their field duties, tending to and harvesting the crops needed for the feast. And a good chunk of the elkkin were out in the valley, searching for more beasts to roast.

Inside the village limits, Kerl was helping his wife tend to one of many temporary firepits. They had to make sure that each firepit was safe and ready for cooking. 

"Do you need help with those stones–"

"I've got it. Don't worry," Gillee replied with a lullaby voice.

Kerl nodded and looked to the next firepit. "Very well. Then I'll go get that one started–"

"Kerl, honey, that one's already made." 

Gillee stopped lining up stones and showed her full attention to her husband. "... What's wrong?"
