I couldn't keep my emotions in check any longer and had a blackout.

When I woke up again, I was in the hospital. Ryan was right next to me. With bags under his eyes and stubble, he looked like he'd aged five years.

I grabbed his hand in a panic. "Where are they?"

Ryan patted my hand reassuringly and said, "They're in jail. I've hired a lawyer for you. Don't worry."

I fell back onto the bed powerlessly and stared blankly at the light. Tears welled up in my eyes, but I refused to blink.

"Are you hungry? I'll buy you something to eat." Ryan stood up. I quickly grabbed his hand and shook my head repeatedly, like a drowning person grabbing a piece of driftwood.

"Stay with me, I'm afraid."

He sat down again and said softly, "Don't be afraid. I'm always here for you."

I forced a smile and said, "Thank you."

Ryan stroked my head as if he were coaxing a child, "Silly girl, why don't you have a good cry?"
