He requested me to wait while he went to an elderly man across the room to talk. 

a guy who seemed to be well aware of Max's identity. I felt myself flush as the guy gazed over Max's shoulder at me. I hurriedly looked aside and then back up toward the painted ceiling. A little while later, I was walking with Max down a short set of stairs and into a tiny space that was crammed with row after row of books. 

I couldn't help but wonder whether Max frequented this area or if he had already done some reconnaissance there over the week since he knew just where to go. Actually, I loved both Max's concepts: the Max who was as familiar with the library as a staff member and the Max who had given this as much thought as I had.
