Some great ideas for this specific novel would be Jon recruiting specific people (Jon Arryn, Daenerys, Barristan Selmy, etc.) that will have a huge impact on the years to come, stopping specific people as well (Petyr Baelish, Varys, Pycelle, Cersei, etc.). Think of it as kingdom building in a way while making moves that will help the process along.
