CHAPTER 231
295 AC
POV THIRD PERSON
Now that Repun and his pod were free, the dynamic of the conflict in the Sisters had shifted dramatically. These formidable allies had effectively severed the supply and reinforcement lines of the Sistermen. Any ship that dared to approach the island met a relentless and uncompromising blockade. The aquatic guardians, led by Repun, acted swiftly to prevent any vessels from reaching the blockaded Littlesister.
In this coordinated effort, Poe and Erebus played a vital role in maintaining the efficiency of the blockade. Their aerial scouting allowed for a seamless coordination between the air and sea, ensuring that no ship could slip past the watchful eyes of Aermir's familiars.
Aermir and his trusted advisors gathered around a large table, where a meticulously detailed map of the Littlesister lay stretched out. The map depicted the entire island and small pieces representing the forces of the Vale were placed strategically across it. Each piece symbolized a contingent of soldiers, their numbers and positions clearly marked, creating a visual representation of the unfolding situation. Aermir was getting real-time information about the enemy forces thanks to his familiars.
With calculated determination etched on his face, Aermir leaned over the large table, his eyes fixed on the small pieces that represented the Vale forces scattered across the map of the Littlesister. It was a critical moment for their war council, as they sought to devise a strategy that would further solidify their grip on the island.
"The Vale Lords have secured nearly all the beaches on the west side of the island, and they've stationed sentries all around," Aermir explained.
Eddard Snow interjected, "Their focus on the west is due to the presence of vital castles there, making the defense stronger on that side."
Aermir's lips curled into a smile as he continued, "Now that we've effectively neutralized their naval capabilities, we'll employ a tactic of stealth and the cover of night. We'll land on the eastern shore and then use our men in vanguard position for skirmishes and small-scale sieges."
Turning his attention to Harlik, he instructed, "Position Northern Lords forces on the flanks and rear during these smaller battles, keeping them away from the front lines and starving them for glory."
Confusion flickered across the faces of Aermir's advisors, prompting Jory Flint to voice their collective inquiry, "My lord, wouldn't it be wiser to share the vanguard with them to minimize our losses?"
Aermir's response would shed light on the underlying strategy he had in mind, something his council was yet to fully grasp. Aermir gently shook his head, his eyes reflecting a calculating resolve.
"No, initially, the information won't reach the primary body of the enemy forces I will prevent it, allowing us to engage them in smaller skirmishes and encounters. During these early battles, the Juggernauts and I should suffice to contain their vanguards. However, as we approach the main host, it'll become increasingly challenging to continue this method. The Northern Lords will be more willing to take up the vanguard positions by then, hungry for their share of the action. They will eventually stand alongside the Juggernauts, and in this way, we'll minimize our losses."
Though the plan made logical sense, there was an air of discomfort among Jory and Harlik, a sentiment that didn't escape Aermir's perceptive gaze. He flashed them a knowing smile before gently inquiring, "What is it about the plan that troubles you?"
Harlik and Jory exchanged glances, and it was Jory who spoke, a touch of concern in his voice, "It's a sound plan, my lord, but... aren't they, our brethren and allies?"
Aermir's gaze bore into the two advisors as he continued to lay out his perspective.
"They are, indeed, our brethren, but let me pose a question and answer me with unwavering honesty. Do you believe that 2000 Northerners can outmatch 2000 Sistermen?"
Jory responded with an air of confidence, his voice unwavering, "Certainly, my lord. On land, those pirates wouldn't stand a chance. 2000 Northmen could best 4000 of them with ease."
Aermir nodded, acknowledging Jory's conviction. "I share your belief in that regard. Now, let me ask you one more question. Do you believe that 2000 Northmen are on par with 2000 of my soldiers?"
This question gave Jory pause, causing him to hesitate. He had witnessed the rigorous training and discipline of Aermir's forces himself. Having received training at the Forge, he knew well the extent of their capabilities. Sensing Jory's uncertainty, Harlik chimed in, "No, my lord. If it is Juggernauts 200 of them would slaughter them. Five hundred of our knights alone could overcome them, and a thousand of our soldiers could surpass 2000 Northerners. Our soldiers are on an entirely different level."
Aermir nodded in agreement, affirming their assessment. "That's precisely my perspective. While they are our brethren and allies, our forces are not equals to theirs. They are worlds apart, so I cannot place their lives in the same category as my own men."
...
As Aermir and his fleet sailed past the Littlesister, approaching the eastern side of the island, his contemplations were abruptly interrupted by Poe's voice echoing in his mind.
"Father, you have been discovered by one of the coastal holdings."
Aermir's reaction was immediate and intense. He demanded answers, his thoughts conveyed through their mental connection full of rage, "WHAT! How did this happen?"
Poe quickly explained the unfortunate turn of events, "They had a scout stationed along the shore, concealed beneath the thick canopy. He was equipped with a Myrish far-sight lens. Regrettably, we failed to spot him in time, and he had already ignited a beacon by the time we detected his presence."
Aermir's frustration was palpable as he slammed his hand onto the table before him, eliciting startled looks from his nearby men. Kegan, puzzled by the sudden outburst, inquired, "My Lord, is everything alright?"
Aermir's mind raced as he considered the situation. After a few moments of reflection, he communicated his plan, "Take Kilim and proceed to that coastal holding. Ensure that the inhabitants are under your control. You and Erebus will establish a strict blockade, allowing no birds or messengers to escape. Once they are out of the holding's line of sight, eliminate them discreetly. I want them to believe that reinforcements are on their way. How many men do they have?"
The urgency and gravity of the situation were clearly reflected in Aermir's voice and his strategic directives. After flying around the hold and looking inside through the windows, Poe said,
"Around 500 men."
Aermir turned to Kegan and said,
"Turn the ships. We are making a landing on the first beach. We have been discovered."
