Before the fight, Erik explained these creatures. They were called Noks and had a brain crystal power that made them able to use venom—a common ability among creatures on New Alexandria's outskirts—so finding such beasts wasn't surprising.

They were in a group of fifty. Erik and the others found them thanks to his expertise and Judith's hounds.

Erik's ability to lead them to hunt surprised Anderson. He didn't know about Erik's dexterity and the biological supercomputer, or that he went hunting thaids every day, and he thought not only was he a very talented fighter but also a great leader. He was unbelievably good; it looked like he'd done it before, which was crazy.
