Chapter 30: Uproar

When the final customer leaves, the three of us sit down at one of the tables. Kam treats us to glasses of mead and some cured meat. We eat quietly for a few minutes, before Kam speaks up.

“You never answered my question,” she says, looking up at Dominik. “Why are you staying here for so long? You usually only spend a night every few weeks.”

Dominik looks down at his food, and I place my hand over his. “The castle,” I start, filling in for Dominik, “was set on fire. Everything inside was destroyed. We’re worried that the person who did it will come back.”

Kam lifts her brows. “Why would someone do that?”

“They found out about Dominik,” I say. “It’s my fault that it happened.”

“No,” Dominik says, squeezing my hand. “I should have been more careful.”

“I’m not interested in seeing a couple fight,” Kam chimes in. “But that is concerning. If the common people find out about us being shifters and decide to revolt like this…”
