Post Praimfaya Chapter 3

The next day, after we managed to get the rover from under the ground, and after we make sure that it was still working, we left, driving towards Polis. I volunteer to drive us to Polis, letting Clarke get some well-deserved sleep while I get us closer to Polis. A few hours after we start moving, the blonde princess wakes up and the first thing she does was to get her hands on the radio and call the Ark.

"Can anyone hear me? Bellamy, Raven please do come in."

And like always we hear nothing in return, and yet just like before Clarke continues with her daily transmissions, hoping that at least the Ark would get them, even if they can send one back.

"It's been two months since Praimfaya. Leon and I left Becca's Island yesterday, and everything looks even more horrifying than we imagined. You guys wouldn't believe just how much sand there is now everywhere, since we left the bunker a day ago, we didn't say anything alive, not even an insect, not to mention a plant or an animal. It took us a few hours of walking, but luckily, we ended up finding the rover that we left behind, and by some miracle, it still works, no doubt thanks to Raven. Anyways, we're near Polis now, and I think we'll reach the city in a few hours if we continue driving at this pace. Once we reach the city and get to the bunker, I'll try to contact you guys again and above all, I'll have Octavia waiting for you Bellamy. Until then I do hope you guys are safe up there, Clarke out."

I could hear the pain and fear in her voice, but there was nothing I could do to ease that pain or make Clarke forget about that fear, after all, she might be right about some things that I'd rather not think about, at least not now.

On the other hand, Clarke felt her tears falling down her cheeks, as her grief over being separated from our friends and family was still as painful as it was the first day she woke after the death wave. Before she could even react, I dragged her to my side gently hugging her with an arm while keeping my other one on the wheel, slowing down a little just in case.

"Don't be like that, princess, you still have me."

She threw me a forced smile before she hugged me back. "I'm fine, Leon, don't worry, besides I know that you won't leave me behind."

"No princess, you are not fine. I know that you are in pain and that you miss your mother and our friends since I too feel like that, but sadly there's not much we can do other than keep going forward."

"No Leon, we both are wrong. We didn't lose our friends, not like losing them for good. We shouldn't be this upset, after we would meet them again once they figure out how to get back on Earth, besides, the rest of our friends are inside the bunkers, that's our job to get them out of there."

This was a surprise for me, considering that I wouldn't have thought that Clarke would even think about something like this in such a way, but at the same time, she was right. None of our friends died, and while some are in space while others are in bunkers, they are not dead, they are still waiting for us. Nevertheless, we spend the rest of the journey in silence, enjoying each other company on our way. Slow and steady we made our way towards the capital of the grounders, and by the time we finally drove into the city, it was already past morning and early in the afternoon. By some stroke of luck, most of the buildings were still standing, at least the ones that weren't all tall, thus Praimfaya ran through them but didn't turn them into piles or rubbles. However, the tower on the other hand had fallen since there was no longer a huge building built in the middle of the city, towering over every other building.

"Let's stop here."

I stopped the rover as soon as I heard Clarke, turning off the engine and following her out of the car as she runs towards the rubble. Clarke climbs up it carefully, standing on top of the pile to get a better look at the scene in front of her. Once I reached her side, I could see her face fall as she stares out, and for a good reason. Everything other than the first five floors was destroyed and turned into rubble, burying everything underneath a new mountain that would take us years if not decades to clear out by ourselves and without proper machinery.

"I don't want to be that guy, but the bunker is under all that rubble right?"

"C'mon, Leon. We need to find a way in, one way or another."

For the next two days, we tried everything we could to reach the bunker, but sadly, we barely put a tent in the mountain of rubble that was blocking our path. No matter how much concrete, how many pieces, or how hard we smashed, we barely even move forward. It didn't take us all that long to realize that it was painfully impossible to get through the rubble without some proper equipment used for demolitions, and since we didn't have access to that, there was nothing we could do, no matter how long we struggled.

Clarke stares at the wood in her hand in sadness, tears welling up in her eyes. You think of her words from earlier when you were in the rover. I know what it's like to lose someone. You reach out and place a comforting hand on her arm, opening your mouth to say something when you hear a low rumble. Something about it lifts the hairs on the back of your neck, and your senses quickly shift into overdrive. You realize you can feel slight shaking, and nearby a small stone drops from up above, alerting you to a larger problem seconds before it hits.

In the end, after wasting two days, achieving nothing other than getting ourselves tired beyond measure, we decided that there was nothing we could do here for now. Neither of us talked as we drove away from the city, leaving behind Octavia and the grounders, and heading towards the mountain hoping that we would have more luck there than we had here.
