In some variations Scott is actually the victim of prolonged/chronic mind control/hypnosis. I remember hearing that the dude who did it wanted Scott to make babies with Jean to create the ultimate human. I mean Scott has access to infinite energy and Jean was an extremely powerful psychic so it kind of makes sense it'd result in a being of infinite power.
