Vix stood frozen. Across from her, standing a few feet away, the Riverman watched her silently. A wailing wind swept through the canals past him. It pressed his heavy cloak against his body, revealing the shape of him beneath. Vix realized that his left arm ended suddenly below the elbow.

The orange, flickering pupils within the skull face fell to his disfigured appendage, following Vix’s gaze. “Not to worry.” He chuckled, a horrible, clangorous sound, like a bell being dropped from a great height over and over. “I’ve had this little scratch for a while. Long before our encounter in the Dry Works.”

Vix took a step back. The Riverman made no move to stop her. Fear was billowing inside her, telling her to run away as fast as she could. But there was nothing but the dam behind, blocking her.

“Where is Caine?” the Riverman asked, his harsh voice reverberating off the canal walls.
