In fits and starts, we worked on the bridge whenever cabin fever drove us outside. In the height of winter, wolves began hovering close to the cabin, maddened by the smell of the horses safely locked in the outhouse and the scent of two humans in the area. We took to carrying our weapons when venturing outside.

Advantaging a few good days sprinkled among the bad, we finished the bridge before the first Chinook blew fresh, warm air over the north hill, thawing the icicles hanging from the cabin’s eaves. I reckoned James would make a visit soon, so I decided to go hunting for green meat.
