“I’m putting her back to bed with blue bunny and calling the pediatrician for an appointment as early as possible today,” Jason said as he picked up the phone and dialed Dr. Breckenridge’s office. The first open appointment was at eleven.

By nine thirty Kitty was running a high fever and screaming in pain. Zach grabbed her and pulled Jason by the arm. “We’re going to the Emergency Room.”

Zach sped down Asbury Avenue to Route thirty-three and almost ran two red lights. The roads were clear for once and he was able to get to Central Shore in fifteen minutes.

They pulled up to the ambulance entrance and Zach carried her in followed by a shaking Jason. The triage nurse took Kitty right into a glass-enclosed room in the ER.

The doctor came over immediately. “Call surgery to prep an OR stat. This little girl’s appendix burst.”
