Chapter 26

Disappointment welled up in his stomach. He’d almost hoped Jormoly would have steered Genthry toward another derelict monstrosity, so they could steal another week together at least. It would have been an unrealistic wish, of course. Dryath himself needed to make his escape today too, back to a life of rounding up people like the ones helping him now.

The ship’s owner climbed out of the cockpit. He was an old man, human, and explained in few words that he was looking to “get out of the business.” He was more than happy to let Genthry take a look through the ship and run diagnostics on the systems before accepting payment, but everything passed inspection. He was simply an old smuggler looking to retire.

Dryath felt like he was bursting out of his skin. Was everything coming to an end this quickly? He couldn’t make himself believe it. By this time the next day, he’d be in uniform again. By this time tomorrow, Genthry would once again be the enemy.
