The mission I’d been given by my superior in London—the final one, Sir Aldrich Wolfram had promised—was completed at last, and the report had been couriered to him.

Roddy and I were at a loose end.

Before returning home to England, I cajoled him into showing me the property he’d owned with Charlie Pearson.

“Don’t know why you’d want to see it, sweetheart. It’s nothing but empty veldt.”

“Not quite.” A friend from my Sandhurst days, who had also fallen into my line of work, used his skills as a surveyor to study Roddy’s land and had learned the uninspired landscape was littered with veins of diamonds.

Roddy and I took the train to South Africa, and then rode the rest of the way on horseback to the property that belonged to him. It took us quite some time and was a dirty, exhausting journey to visit the diamond mines and meet with the managers who oversaw them.
