“She doesn’t like storms,” Alex says when Ryan asks, and shrugs when Ryan asks him to clarify. Naturally, he doesn’t; merely accepts the extra free cake that Milly shoves his way (“To get some meat on those skinny little bones!”) and even gives her a small smile that has her puffed up with glee.

If John is a charmer, Alex knows at least how to wield the power himself, and chooses (mostly) not to do so.

“What did she lose?” Ryan asks in a whisper when John is out of earshot, and Alex frowns. “Your mother. You said she’s already lost her mind and soul—what went this time?”
