He left the kitchen by the back door, and made his way up the narrow staircase reserved for the help. The second and third floors were respectively designated girls’ and boys’ wards. Bishop took pride in his position at Devonshire. People made so much of these places nowadays. Seems like you couldn’t pick up a newspaper without seeing a picture of some sad-looking, pale-faced child, afflicted with the disease.

At other places, like Devonshire, it was especially hard on the children being separated from their parents for such long periods. Still, Bishop reasoned they were better off than some; their parents had the money to send them away where they’d get the best care possible. Better off than the children at Devonshire who had no one.
