Danny sat and listened to the echoing silence and tried not to think. After a while, he struggled to his feet and slowly moved up to his bedroom where he could lock the door and be alone. After all, he was going to have to get used to it again. 34
The next three days were pure hell for Danny. He was in limbo, slipping deeper into depression while he helplessly waited for events to play out. Evan was avoiding him, refusing to continue the discussion. On the rare occasions their paths crossed, he was cold and formal. And still very angry.
Danny tried again to convince Nessa to release the funds for the community center, but she wouldn’t budge. And she insisted Danny continue with the wedding plans, including attending the bachelor party. It was pointless, Danny knew, but he couldn’t muster the energy to oppose her. Besides, what harm could it do? There would be no vows exchanged, no ceremony—Danny wouldn’t be there.
