Chapter 59

Danny finally broke the long silence. “So, what changed? And what does Aunt Vera have to do with it?”

Evan turned to face Danny. “Sunday, I found out that my parents were married. I’m not a bastard. I’m a legal, true and legitimate Dwyer, entitled to the name and a place within the family.”

“What? Wow. But that makes no sense. And what did Aunt Vera have to do with it?”

“She knew. She signed as witness on my parents’ marriage certificate. Hell, she was probably the maid of honor.”

Danny’s mouth dropped open. “Damn.”

“Yeah. Damn.”

“But that means that all that drama about her being jilted by your father and the bad feelings and the rift between the Carmodys and the Dwyers was…”

“Fiction. A ruse. A little game she and my parents played.” Evan’s tone was bitter.

“But why? What was the point?”

Evan chuckled nastily. “Vera said it was their gift to me. They decided it would be better for me to be ostracized, treated like dirt and spit on than be raised in Colin Dwyer’s image.”
